Folks often think SpeedTree=Realistic but I've made almost all of Palia's foliage using it! 🪻🌷 It's very versatile and can really speed up a traditional Maya/Max workflow. It handles lower poly meshes ✨like a dream✨
Do you like foliage textures? 👉👈 I painted a whole bunch of them for Palia!! Love the workflow combo of handpainted textures from Photoshop then model them in SpeedTree 🌳🌻 It's fast, iterative, and honestly, just kinda fun.
Absolute dogshit moderation. As many in favor to have

be a safe place for real human artists and not AI, I posted this image. Today I found it got taken down. Extremely disappointing. Hope you enjoyed my $$ for the years I had previously supported Pro subscription.

! 👏
With over 7 years of experience as an environment artist, I've shipped on PS, Xbox, Switch, and PC, doing just about every step of the level creation process 😊
THE DAY HAS FINALY COME 🥳 been dying to share all the work I've done on Palia!! Boatloads of foliage, vistas, architecture, heck even some VFX and level design 🌲🏔️ I got to touch a lot of different systems, and absolutely love the game that came out from our efforts.
I typically avoid posting hot takes and was not expecting any kinda response, but it was nice to get a W out of this.
Still. Art made by AI will never have the same value compared to made by humans. The life experiences and ideals from its creator is what gives art value.
Fellow 3D artists! Could I please ask you to recommend me your favorite Blender tutorials? ☺️ Going to be booting it up for the first time here, any guides and tips would be very welcome! 💖
I worked my 🍑BOOTY🍑 off on this map, where I got to be a 4-in-1 concept artist, modeler, world builder AND lighter. We had a tight deadline and we made it work. Hella proud of the new

Expecting job candidates to be constantly working on side projects outside of work is toxic as hell. But also! Make sure you have a healthy social life, exercise regularly, cook healthy home made meals, keep your home clean, and call your parents okay?
Hey

I'm Luiza, senior environment artist obsessed with all things outdoors! Big fan of using SpeedTree for foliage and Gaea for mountains and vistas 🌼🏔️
🎨
ArtStation what the hell, every project should BY DEFAULT be protected from AI systems, not there as an opt in service. Closer, but still missing the point 🤦
TIL I learned about the Purple Passion plant, which is covered in a purple velvety fuzz. It looks as if an environment artist had too much fun with fresnel 🫣
It occurred to me that this year alone I was part of 20+ interviews, mostly for art positions but also some in production, design and engineering. I wanted to write some of my observations for fellow game devs out there, keeping it broad and non-art focused. (1)
Hey fellow game devs!! My team at

I'm a bit lazy when it comes to world building, so I created a rock kit that would allow me to be even lazier! It's easy to clump them without obvious intersections and repetition, making it easy to just throw them anywhere.

Want to announce that I've officially started working on a stylized SpeedTree tutorial!! 🤩 Find it hilarious that 3 years ago I tweeted this out. SP's learning curve is a bit steep, but here's to hoping I can shed more light into this awesome program!!
This made my day. Some lovely fan on the
@playPalia
discord shared their drawing and analysis of the purple flower I made for the trailer 🥺💜 Never in a million years would have thought someone would be making fanart of my foliage 😭🙏
It took me a day to process the layoff at Singularity6. Yesterday was a horrible day for folks working on Palia. So many of my amazing peers were laid off. Seeing their slack disappearing in real time while their computers were resetting & work being deleted. Yes, I'm angry.
Since getting laid off, I've:
- Re-painted my office
- Started taking pilates classes
- Tackled a bunch of wedding planning tasks
- Touched grass and meet up with friends
- Actually had the time ... to play some games?
Ngl this is the best I've mentally felt in a long time

Clay Render QRT 🧑🎨
Always wishing I could spend more time in Zbrush, absolutely love starting sculpts with just a sphere and dynamesh.
Orb's material + rendering tut is 👌👌
Clay Renders QRT 🎊🤓
Sculpting is my favorite part of the process and I will take any opportunity to show them off, very proud of them!
Michael's (Orb) matcap goes hard, and I suggest y'all check it out, makes my work look a lot cooler than it is 😎
Whether it's by lamplight or the early morning sun, Palia is full of wonder - waiting to be explored. Are you a night owl🦉, or an early riser ☀️?

After 3.5 years, my time on Palia has come to an end. It will always have a special place in my heart, despite its many challenges. As an environment artist I never thought I would see fan art of my work, and yet, folks came to love the purple flowers that I made for Palia 1/🧵
This was my college senior thesis from many years ago. After posting it, it got featured by Epic, I got write an 80lvl article, and was contacted by a few recruiters. Which then eventually led me to my first game dev job 🥹 Forever grateful

! I'm an Environment Artist at Hi-Rez Studios and I love making foliage 🌿 My hobby lately has been messing with Quixel's NDO and Unreal's material editor to make some cool things.
✨
I appreciate Artstation taking the correct action on this one specific case. But the art community is deeply hurting. From NTFs treating art as a monetary commodity, to AI gobbling up/copying specific artists and presenting its regurgitation as art.
It's been a rough few years.
My amazing partner and I got engaged last month during our trip to Japan. It was a serene day, with the cherry blossoms at their peak bloom, and we were both beaming with joy. Looking forward to forever with the wonderful

Couple weeks ago I went Wyoming to touch grass, meme on mountains and breathe some fresh clean air 🏔️🪻 Insanely beautiful state, could not recommend more. A nature lover’s paradise truly.
The FTC just banned non-compete agreements for American workers
The rule goes into effect after 120 days, but lawsuits are expected that could delay it
So many amazing artists are successful and not present/known on social media, don't feel the pressure to be always active online!! Save your mental energy where you need it to go most 💁
I spent ~200hrs doing art tests the first month after graduating college. My mom said I had visibly lost weight and color. That shit is harsh mentally and physically. Let’s not do that
Heyyyy not sure who needs to hear this but I have never gotten a job when they have required an art test from me. 3-10 days of unpaid work, 0 feedback each time. It sucks. I try to always push myself to use new techniques/software during that time so it's not 100% a waste of time
My tried-and-true way to get into games:
-Released a foliage heavy senior project
-My lucky ass gets project featured by Epic, later at 80lvl
-Blizz hits me up for a foliage artist position on WoW, fails the art test lmao
-Art test gets seen by Hi-Rez, gets enviro position there
@PetitFrogMilk
@ArtStationHQ
I feel the same way. As far as sites that give you public visibility, Twitter is very much dying, Artstation feels unsafe, and Insta has been lost to their 'reels' TikTok wannabe algorithm. Personal websites are safe, but don't gain public traction. Shit sucks
Still at it with gouache, Monument Valley’s presence left a big impact in me last year and tried to re-capture its massiveness. Painting from photo has its pros and cons, no moving sun but harder to color match 🏜
For folks wanting to either share/check game dev salary data, this doc has been excellent. I've shared my numbers on there, but happy to chat with mutuals.

At this time, I intend to do my best to help my peers however I can. To some extent, I wonder why I was kept over them. We all worked incredibly hard to deliver Palia as a new studio working on our first project. It is hard to see so much passion get churned.
Last month my parents came to visit, during which I took the opportunity to come out as non-binary to them. Apart from surprised, they had no real opinion other than "do what makes you happy".
And I can say that I am happy.

folks, it's time to show me your goods 🍑👀
I'm Luiza Tanaka and I've been a 3D environment artist at Hi-Rez Studios for close to 3 years! Most of my new stuff is under NDA but I'll get around posting some of it soon ✨🤣
So... I've gone indie!! Today is my first official day at
@singularity_six
and I'm super duper excited for all the delicious art we'll be cooking here! 🤩✨
Moving to LA next month, so picture this:
a tiny 10yr old Honda Fit, with 2 adults, 4 suitcases and 2 PC towers. Driving at 9000ft elevation through the Rocky mountains.
That is going to be me very soon 🥲
I never got around posting this, but this was one of the last bits n bobs I worked on while on the Smite team. We sunk a whole area under the ocean and cursed it with eldritch magic 🧜♂️🪸 Got to make some seaweed, clams and tentacles 🤣
The thing I pay the most attention while conducting an interview is how often a candidate is able to respond with a -specific- example of something they've done. This seems straight forward, but too often folks will give the ideal answer of how they -WOULD- react (2)
We really appreciate your patience and support, and can't wait to share our game with you once it's ready! For now, please enjoy some Tau 💕

Today is my last day at Hi-Rez. I've grown so much over the past few years at the studio and will forever be thankful to all the kind people who have helped me become a better artist and game dev. I will fondly remember my time here, from summer hula parties to patch note days 💖
Honestly makes me so happy to see ArtStation flooded with No to AI squares. There's no soul to AI generated art. Keep that stuff far away from the artists who have poured their sweat and love into their work.
I'm so very sorry to all the folks impacted by the layoffs today. After a brutal 2023, we were all hoping for better. I hope 2024 can still change course for game devs.
We deserve better for all the love and passion we give.
Signal boosting my amazing peers from S6 that were hit by the layoffs. We have some amazing talent and straight up wizards in this list
I worked closely with with pretty much all of the artists on this list, I highly recommend them.
Speechless. Absolute insanity. All happening in the one of the most expensive regions to live in the country. Corporate greed is completely out of control
A few years ago back in college, I was singing about how great Artstation was to anyone that would listen 🤣💙 Such an awesome community. Happy

Went offline the past 2.5 weeks to emotionally re-charge 💙 Greece was one of the most beautiful places I've ever been to, it was a longtime dream come true 🇬🇷
to a certain scenario, vs. how they have previously tackled it. I love hearing about people's previous experiences solving problems they've encountered, no matter how impressive or recent it is. Being told a story is the quickest way I will believe in (3)
