I know people of my parents' generation that were left at orphanages because their parents couldn't feed them during the Depression. My mother was sent to live with her grandparents for that reason. That's the kind of situation that creates that level of desperation.

1979 -- in LA in when the "boat people" -- refugees who risked their lives to cross the Pacific ocean, often in tiny boats, from Vietnam. Heard ppl say they were bringing disease, all kinds of things. Turns out, virtually all became amazing Americans, contributing greatly.
