Why do so many Brexiters seem to think the
#EU
just 'happened' to the UK? We voted to join, then approved, ratified, and lobbied on every single EU treaty since. We also ran the most important committees & departments. The EU is as much 'British' as it is German or French.
I honestly thought I’d imagined it: just went to and this is how their actual website sums up Brexit. Please RT to help their business and send them some 🇪🇺 love!
I 'jumped the queue' to read law in Paris, then returned to work there as a qualified solicitor. Also 'jumped the queue' to Brussels, where I found my dream job, husband and had my first 2 children.
Not once did the French or Belgians call me a
#QueueJumper
Shame on this PM.
I France, talked Brexit with a young beautician:
'Thing is, Brits think they can re-join overnight if they change their minds' I explained
'What? EU accession process takes years' she replied
'How do you know that?' I asked
'They teach the EU at school. Part of 'civic' ed'.
Sigh
‘So, you happy about
#Brexit
?’ I asked my Uber driver.
‘Yes’ he replied, emphatic.
‘Good’ I said, somewhat taken aback by his lack of ambiguity. ‘Why?’
‘Because this government has a plan. It knows exactly what it is doing’.
He used those exact words.
Spotted a man wearing a blue 'WTO rules' tshirt & was like 'Hey, love your tshirt!'. He looked chuffed.
'You're being ironic, right?' I laughed. 'Nope, dead serious'.
I was baffled. 'You'll understand soon', he added, 'it's the best way'.
'I negotiated trade: it really isn't' 😢
A bunch of seriously scary, aggressive, Brexit protesters just rushed up to
#ShamiChakrabarti
as she left the
#SupremeCourt
then - as I tried to get them to back off her - me. All big, grown, men threatening small women. Nice.
#BrexitChaos
Husband (EU passport) goes in ‘VIP’ speedy EU passports Lane whilst I (UK - formerly also VIP) have to queue.
What were you ‘thinking’ voting Brexit, people?
#BrexitDisaster
#BrexitLies
Any other Remainers struggling to watch, listen to or read any news about Brexit? I realise that's childish. But it's just so depressing to watch this government, with its whopping Parliamentary majority but 'actual votes' minority, destroy 40+ years of UK work & freedoms.
How many British Europeans are starting to feel that the Britain of today isn't 'their' Britain. That they are more at home with fellow EU citizens in Berlin, Madrid or Paris. And that perhaps Brexiters are right: if we love that society & world so much, go live there.
I don’t understand
@BorisJohnson
is the leader of the UK. I’ve just skimmed his tweets for the past 3 days: he doesn’t appear to even mention
#BlackLivesMatterUK
movement or the related civil unrest: people - black, brown, white - are angry & scared
Isn’t it his job to unite us?
Seriously,
@Conservatives
party: what is wrong with you?
You ‘used’ to be the party of tradition, of respecting judges and the rule of law.
You ‘used’ to be the ones fighting for our place in the EU.
There ‘used’ to be lines you wouldn’t cross.
#InternalMarketBill
My job is to negotiate and train people to negotiate. Novice Brexit Secretary
@DominicRaab
's kick-off position - threatening to refuse to pay UK's agreed contribution for current EU financial period - is text-book wrong. Not because it's tough. But because it's illegal.
Why is the
@BBCNews
giving airtime to this man? He’s no longer our PM because he made bad call after bad call. And lied a lot.
Stop giving him the attention he so clearly craves.
So scary listening to
@toryboypierce
on
@LBC
listing the reasons for why the UK is bleeding money - Covid, rising energy prices - and ‘completely’ ignoring the crippling UK costs of increased bureaucracy & barriers to trade because of… Brexit

These 6 politicians are plotting to cancel the votes of 17.4 million people.
🔵 We respect the result of the EU Referendum.
🔵 We will get Brexit done by October 31st and take this country forward.
✍️ Show them they can't ignore it.
➡️
Just called the European Parliament for work and one of the MEP's advisors just blurted out 'please don't leave! We want you to stay'.
He then asked if we were now officially living in a dictatorship. Sigh. This is how the world now sees us.

I had thought we had freedom of the media in the UK. But yesterday's (almost) universal parroting by journalists of a line (voters want Brexit) which was the exact opposite of a huge
#LocalElections2019
swing towards Remain parties (voters want to stay in EU) made clear we don't
Why are all the BBC's 'random people' on the
#BBCOurNextPM
debate who quit voting
@Conservatives
only those who switched to the 'Brexit Party' to get Brexit? What about all those I met who switched from Tories to
@LibDems
to support the fight for Remain?
@mrconfino
We’re all horrified. I literally don’t know anyone who isn’t, from any religion or country.
But that doesn’t justify killing thousands of innocent civilians.
Our 💔 for Israel. But its government needs to stop killing children. They’re not your enemy.
Interesting fact:
@Conservatives
party won 43.6% of the vote when it rose to power in 2019. Hitler’s National Socialist party won 43.9% of the vote when it rose to power in 1933. He then created an autocracy & crushed all dissent from Parliament, judges, media & his own team.
Am only 5mins into today’s
#PMQs
& already
@Keir_Starmer
has ‘twice’ been told he’s wrong by PM, only for Starmer to ‘twice’ courteously reply that he is using the govt’s own slides
It would be so much easier if
@10DowningStreet
just answered the questions
#Starmer

They really do: the referendum was advisory only. And Parliamentary sovereignty means MPs have the right to change their mind. This is why we need to teach "civics ed" in UK schools: even our cabinet doesn't understand our constitution.
Did
@BorisJohnson
just say live on TV, after the
#SupremeCourtuk
ruling, that his plan to Brexit 31st Oct come what may 'isn't made any easier' by Parliament and the courts? Seriously? Like the two other main pillars of our constitution are a nuisance?
He has totally lost it.
@JEGullis
I can’t believe replies are having to explain - to a Member of Parliament - why, in a modern democracy, it’s “ok” for the media to interview the opposition.
Am not kidding. An advertisement just came on
@LBC
radio: ‘If you trade with the EU, you’ll have to fill in customs declarations for the first time in 40 years!’. Sounded genuinely excited.
I mean... what is ‘wrong’ with the UK?

@NickFerrariLBC
argues that ripping down a statue to slave traders would be like shutting Auschwitz, because both are a memorial to horror: no, Auschwitz ‘presents’ itself as a memorial to horror, whereas statues present themselves as a memorial to pride.
@pritipatel
You’re Home Secretary: stoking more hatred is the last thing you should be doing. You need to ‘unite’ people.
A good start would be addressing a) why people are demonstrating b) that the vast majority are doing it peacefully.
@BestForBritain
@paddydocherty
@bbcquestiontime
Yep: my Belgian husband is supporting a whole family of Brits ‘and’ paying lots of £££ in taxes. But when interviewed for French & Belgian news he explains he feels way less welcome here now. Other friends in similar situations have just left - and taken their £££ with them.
Brexit brought power back from the EU to... London. I squirmed as I watched those interviews where Lexit voters wanted to put two fingers up to (Conservative) 10 Downing Street: their vote didn’t bring power back to Yorkshire, Cornwall, or Kent. It gave it ‘all’ to SW1.
Here’s the thing: 43.6% of you actually ‘voted’ for
@BorisJohnson
. The Remainer-turned-Brexiter. Who helped get a ref result based on lies. Who claimed he’d negotiated the best exit deal then changed his mind & breached it. Who said he’d get us a trade deal then gave up early.
Thanks

NEW: In key Brexit speech on Mon the PM will tell the EU to agree a Canada-style deal or UK walks away.
- UK "privately infuriated" by EU "moving goalposts"
- UK prepared to quit with "Australia-style deal", AKA No Deal (Aus has v basic agreements on security, goods like wine)
Just popped by local supermarket & whisked on a mask before entering. On my way to till, a man walked in & I took a step to the left to give him more space
‘Oh, f*ck off’ he said to me.
I don’t expect people to give ‘me’ room
But to get angry when I give ‘them’ room?

Just woke up to
@piersmorgan
calling
@susannareid100
'pathetically weak' for not believing in

brexit , to which she replied that he's 'pathetically ignorant'
Beginning of another tumultuous week for British politics.
@GMB
Please
@BBCNews
stop dubbing foreign languages & use subtitles instead: so many UK residents speak languages other than English, it’s just so prehistoric to have them ‘spoken over’ in English.
Former
@Conservatives
heavyweight, Sir Malcolm Rifkind, just asked on
@LBC
why - irrespective of the details - Cummings doesn’t resign to stop further damage to his party.
@davidallengreen
It’s more than crass: given our recent history (Windrush, Brexit) it feels like a statement about the UK being different now. That all that multiculturalism is over and being British now means a certain ‘type’ of British. Which makes me deeply uncomfortable.
Brexit thread:
1/On bus my son asked what will happen 'if they make daddy leave' (he's Belgian). I said if my country is stupid enough not to want his father then I won't want to stay. I reminded him that they (alas not I) will always have EU passports. They are European.
@pritipatel
I will so miss EU freedom of movement: it let me read, then practice, law in Paris; then move to Brussels ‘on a whim’ to try a career as a political consultant
I met my Belgian husband & had my 1st 2 children there
I’d love to live in Madrid or Berlin one day
Sigh: thanks Brexit
Delighted that legendary
@NicolaHorlick
is my replacement as the new
@LibDems
Parliamentary Candidate for Chelsea & Fulham: she'll
give Tory Remain-turned-Brexiter
@GregHands
a run for his money in our Remain consituency.
Does anyone (anyone?) believe UK could open, carry out & close negotiations on a EU-UK trade deal, then have it ratified in 28 countries, in just 11 months? (1stFeb2020-31Dec2020). Either
@BorisJohnson
knows nothing about big trade deals, or this
#ToryManifesto
is lying to you.
@JamesCleverly
British judges, not politicians, decide 1) if a case is admissable 2) if someone is guilty.
They must be able to do 'their' job - of implementing the law - without interfearance from politicians.
It’s a sad day when:
1)
@davidallengreen
has to explain the meaning of Rule of Law (the government is not above or beyond the law)
2) Our government plans to limit judges’ power to rule that it has broken the law
3) Our government asks Parliament to approve its breaking the law.
Fascinating analysis from
@davidallengreen
that highlights a major anomaly:
"The lack of any genuine policy basis for risking a constitutional crisis, let alone forcing one, makes this a very strange constitutional drama."
@JasonNParkinson
On reflection, I look a little 'headmistressy' in this clip :) They were just coming at us from all angles and my body language went into ROAR mode.
In any other decade, under any other UK government, this would be front page - deeply shocking - news. But we’re all just used to the
@Conservatives
crushing rule of law & threatening our judges’ independence now.
@bbcquestiontime
Wow. If you threw out all the ‘foreigners’ I know who’ve arrived In the UK in recent years you’d lose a ‘fortune’ in high net worth taxes. And many of them do virtually everything (schools, doctors, hospitals) privately. They pay in ‘so’ much more than they take out.
@CharlotteCGill
People who tried to ‘bypass’ our Sovereign Parliament for the most important vote of my generation then illegally prorogued it to avoid scrutiny ‘do not’ get to lecture on democracy.
I feel nauseous watching this.
@BorisJohnson
pretending not to know that what he says is not true. His childlike body language. And on all his racial attacks 'people deserve to know what's going on in my head'.
This is one 'deeply' unpleasant character
Is it too late to beg all those EU, and other non-UK, doctors & nurses - who left (or cancelled plans to come to) the UK because of our hostile environment & Brexit - to come back? Am just feeling like this whole ‘sovereign island’ thingy isn’t working out too well for us.
@paddydocherty
@BestForBritain
@bbcquestiontime
We’re brainstorming various options. Frankly I’m even more scared of the repeated Govt attacks on the UK constitution & rule of law than I am of far-right xenophobia.
@DPJHodges
Please. We all - leavers and remainers - have a voice. We'll use it for as long as we like, as loud as we like.
Because that's British democracy. And you need to 'respect' that.
Just bumped into a Brexiter friend & (stupidly) got chatting
#prorogue
as we queued for coffee.
'What was the point, though, of Parlt resuming? What have they 'done'? He asked.
'Scrutised the govt' I replied. 'That's its job. It matters'.
Calling me patronising, he stormed off
@Channel4News
You created that 'darker place': you tried to bypass Parliament in triggering a50 & had to be stopped by the Supreme Court; brought the same deal to MPs 3x & pretended it was different, insulted Scots & 'citizens of the world', and chose the hardest of Brexits without mandate.
@mattprescott
@JoRichardsKent
Most people don’t understand trade stuff. So, whereas a ‘proper’ deal would include 30+ chapters, each negotiated by separate specialist teams & stuff on broader geopolitical challenges,
@10DowningStreet
can produce a 2 page joint memo, call it a great deal & most will Believe.
.
@johnredwood
(ooh he's blocked me) asks 'what limits are there on the powers of the
#SupremeCourt
to intervene on how
#Parliament
conducts its business'?
I'd say that the limit is "the law", Mr Redwood. On which the Supreme Court has the ultimate say. It's not rocket science.
3/ Two French women sat behind us in silence. They tapped my shoulder as they got off the bus: 'Excuse me. We found what you told your son so comforting. Thank you'. I still don't really know why.
All I could muster was 'I mean it. And I'm so sorry'.
#BrexitChaos
#RevokeA50
How can
@NickFerrariLBC
say he’s against removing statues glorifying slave traders (captured, imprisoned, abused & tortured black children) but now favours removing one by Eric Gill (abused his white children)?
I mean, the hypocrisy isn’t a good look
@Femi_Sorry
@xciv
I know a few of those civil servants. One Ambassador says to me, after a year’s withdrawal agreement negotiations, ‘Louise none of us understands why the UK didn’t just take 6months to hatch a plan ‘before’ it triggered a50’.
Just woke up early despairing for humanity and my country. Then read dozens of tweets spelling out why
@BorisJohnson
‘s policies are so deplorable and breathed a sigh of relief: I’m not alone in seeing the damage
@10DowningStreet
is wreaking.
Oddly comforting.
The saddest thing about
@trussliz
’s answers at today’s
#PMQs
is how unnecessarily divisive and aggressive her messages, tone and words are. In such sharp contrast with her first
#PMQs
. Why isn't she being advised that grown ups own their mistakes and unite, rather than divide?
The saddest thing about this new UK-EU trade war: we ‘were’ the EU. The EU used to be the UK, leading in a market of 500 million. I worked in Brussels when
@lordmandelson
was EU Trade Commissioner. The Brits were ‘so’ powerful. What a pointless waste of power
#brexit
was.
My heart broke listening to Latvian Prime Minister
@krisjaniskarins
tell
#marr
that "for years, the UK has been one of the strongest defenders & promoters of the single market, and now...the 'champion' of the single market is apparently 'leaving' the single mkt".
Such a waste.
The UK joined the EC on this day 47 years ago. My late father -who decades before served in WW2 then, in the 50s, advised on the Treaty of Rome- was so relieved we'd finally been accepted. Since then, our Brits working in the EU have achieved so much. Thank you: I won't forget.
I should add it’s not a holiday (which according to brexiters is a crime 😂) but a wedding - between an Italian and a Belgium who only met because of… free movement 💕
#stopthehate
#BrexitShambles
@piersmorgan
It's disturbing that someone with as big a following as you
@piersmorgan
regularly warps the truth to suit your narrative: yes, EU exports a big chunk (8-15%) to UK. But that means over 85% goes elsewhere. EU has bigger fish to fry and
@10DowningStreet
knows it
#BrexitShambles
I think we're due an apology from the 'Remain' MPs-including those now campaigning for
#Remain
-who voted to trigger
#a50
. This is 'most'
@UKLabour
& 'every'
@Conservatives
MP except Ken Clarke.
Huge thank you to the 114 who voted against.
We'll remember
@JoeBiden
So pleased the international community is speaking out: this isn't just about breaking international law. It’s about threatening a peace which is already fragile.
@Conservatives
The link I draw here is ‘not’ one of naziism, but between two parties which - despite a minority of votes - are able to gain ‘absolute’ power and crack down on democratic forms of opposition.
Rule of law exists to protect us all.
If you’ve grown up in a big capital city, full of all different cultures, religions and skills, it’s almost impossible to try to put yourself in the mindset of someone who sees that diversity as wrong, scary or un-British. For most of us, the diversity is what ‘makes’ us 🇬🇧
Another 'crucial' case brought by the legendary
@JolyonMaugham
&
@joannaccherry
asking the Court, if PM fails to a) send
#BennAct
letter asking EU for an extension or (b) agree an extension offered by EU (also required by Benn Act), to complete those acts 'itself'. Gulp
#NotMyPM
Just swung by local supermarket & asked our young cashier if he was voting. To my surprise (he didn't vote in 2017) he said yes. 'Why this time?' I asked. He shrugged 'I really don't like Boris'. And although he's probably voting
@UKLabour
and I'll vote
@LibDems
we both 'got' it
@Conservatives
'Plotting' is more like an unelected PM of a party without a majority shutting down our sovereign Parliament to push through a
#NoDealBrexit
'very' few want.
This is just our sovereign Parliament doing its job.
@mikew4EU
There's some good
@wto
stuff. I mean, if it takes time for EU's 28 countries to agree trade deals, just imagine how long it takes WTO's 164. But there are 'huge' gaps & no country in their right mind would just "Go WTO"-especially after throwing away access to largest trade bloc
