Tomorrow we celebrate the life of Martin Luther King, Jr., and his steadfast belief in nonviolent resistance and civil communication. His words ring as true to me today as they did during his life. When receiving his Nobel prize, Dr. King said: "I refuse to accept the view that mankind is so tragically bound to the starless midnight of racism and war that the bright daybreak of peace and brotherhood can never become a reality." On the eve of 2025, I love what the amazing Mary Pickford said about mistakes and looking to the future: "Today is a new day. You will get out of it just what you put into it. If you have made mistakes, even serious mistakes, there is always another chance for you. And supposing you have tried and failed again and again, you may have a fresh start any moment you choose, for this thing we call "failure" is not the falling down, but the staying down." I'm so grateful to have worked with and learned so much from RIchard early in my music career. Deepest gratitude for the immense catalog of amazing music you brought to our world, you will never be forgotten.

Regardless of where we each may stand politically, there's little argument that the concept of "liberty" is an important one, without which the USA would not have come into existence. I wrote "Oh Liberty!" in 2004 to honor the concept of liberty, all of America's veterans, and the Liberty Memorial Monument and Museum in Kansas City, Missouri. Many thanks to tenor Nathan Granner for allowing me to use his performance of "Oh Liberty!" for this video, to Mark Koval for a wonderful orchestration, and Harry Maslin for a great mix!

Feeling grateful this morning that my grandfather showed me the Optimist Creed at a very young age. It was written as a poem in 1912 by Christian D. Larson, and adopted by Optimist Clubs 10 years later. It's still on the wall of my studio, I read it every morning.

The wise words of Martin Luther King, Jr., come to mind this morning: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that." May we all learn to live in the light and love in this challenging time ♥️
