A familiar face at the Institute for Conflict Management has joined the college as a full-time faculty member. Please welcome Elizabeth Guenther McMillan as an Assistant Professor in Conflict Management. 🌟 Professor McMillan has worked with the College of Leadership & Public Service as the Rule 31 Coordinator and as an adjunct professor since 2023. She brings extensive experience, having previously worked as a litigator for a prominent law firm in Nashville before transitioning to a national nonprofit organization that focuses on recruiting and training mid-career professionals to become certified public school teachers. McMillan hopes that students enrolled in her courses will "develop a deeper knowledge of conflict management as an academic study, rooted in science and history," while also acquiring conflict management skills that they can apply in workplaces, communities, and families. She looks forward to learning from her students, who each bring their unique perspectives to the classroom. 🎉 Join us in welcoming Elizabeth to her full-time role in hashtag#LipscombICM. hashtag#WhereTNTurnsforLeadership

Welcome ICM 5013 Students! Here is your weekend! Negotiation is about winning - let's not sugarcoat things. However, and much like the mindset of the larger Lipscomb community, it is not winning at other people's expenses. This weekend our students will learn about negotiating with ethics and how integrity plays a vital role - we are seeking to make both our lives and others better. During the two days students will practice a variety of negotiation skills, including those used by police hostage negotiators in crisis incidents.

Students in the course "Conflict in Business Settings" are preparing for their second weekend of classes. During the first weekend, a discussion was introduced about the distinctions between managers and leaders, particularly their different approaches to handling conflict in the workplace. The class explored how managers emphasize organization, control, and processes while leaders prioritize vision, influence, and relationship-building. This foundational topic has set the stage for a deeper exploration of conflict resolution strategies and their implications in real-world business scenarios.

Conflict or Cultural Differences? "Sometimes seemingly small cultural differences can evolve into conflict. In our increasingly diverse, multi-cultural, international community, differences and misunderstandings based on culture can impact our personal and professional lives. One of the biggest challenges of cultural differences is that our culture is so ingrained in us that most of us think that our way is the only way. " K. Kelly O’Connor, MA, CFRE, discusses this topic in her latest blog post for the Institute for Conflict Management. The Institute for Conflict Management will host a course titled "Impact of Culture and Gender on Negotiation and Mediation," taught by Professor Betty Snyder, in the summer of 2025.
