Most linebackers don't know how to watch film properly.
They sit down and ask themselves "what am I looking for?"
Then get confused at meetings with Coach and lost during plays.
So I put together the 6 main elements of watching film and the questions to ask yourself :
>>🧵<<
Most linebackers don’t know how to fill in for other LB positions (Mike-Sam-Will)
If an injury happens, your ability to switch positions and fill in will :
• Increase your value as a player
• Allow you to stay on the field more
• Give you more opportunities to make plays
The best linebackers are usually leaders.
They communicate on the field.
They put in the extra work outside of practice.
They hold themselves and others accountable.
The biggest reason linebackers get lost, washed and taken out of plays?
• Overthinking
• Lack of trust in themselves
• They’re trying to look at everything
Trust yourself.
Don’t second guess.
Watch the flow of the play.
Stop competing for strength and size.
Most linebackers are already jacked and strong enough to fight a bull.
If you can be first to the ball more times and make a play.
You're the guy.
Strength and size are important.
But it's not in the job description.
Stopping offenses is.
Don't play super hero every play.
Play your role.
If you're a filler?
Fill the gap.
Set the play up.
If you're meant to shoot the gap?
Shoot the gap.
Not every play is yours to make.
Luke Kuechly was a terror for offenses.
He'd blow plays up before they happened.
How did he do this?
He used something more powerful than his body to position himself to make big time plays.
Here's how Luke Kuechly terrorized opponents for 8 years in the NFL :
When should I press my gap.
When your Dline is getting double team.
The easiest way to explain it will be:
If no one is coming to block you!
You must be able to put your eyes on the RB while sensing the blocking schemes upfront.
It will take time to master
This will help you become 60 % more aware! AT LEAST ❗️
Down and distance, On some of the best Defences that I have played. We always had the WILL LB call out the Down and distance on every play.
It helps you understand what kind of plays you will see.
If you can :
• Be around the ball more than others
• Lead your team and uplift them
• Listen to what coach says
• Continue showing up
You're ahead of 99% of linebackers.
Confidence is a linebacker’s bestfriend.
You gain more of it by KNOWING you put in the work. Physically, mentally and spiritually.
Hit the gym. Sprint the track. Watch the film.
Perfect specific technique.
Tell me you can’t be confident after all that.
You punish and hold yourself back when you run directly into an o-line.
He's 300lbs+
Half man him and unbalance him with
• Speed
• Finesse
• Aggression
You don’t need to remember everything on film.
Look for the basics :
• Tendencies
• Which plays are succesful
• When they’re attacking your position
Keep it simple.
Don’t overthink.
Last game didn't go the way you want?
Here's 3 things to consider when watching film so you can dominate next game :
• How were your reads?
• How was your tackling?
• Were you mirroring the running back?
Don't go into games clueless about your mistakes.
Get right.
2nd best way to get better as a linebacker that doesn't involve
• Strength
• Speed
• Size
Training?
Watching OTHERS.
Did Coach approve of what they did?
Did he not?
What did he correct?
And how can you do it better?
Get your mental reps.
Get right.
It takes :
• Speed
• Precision
• Quickness
• Active hands
To get past an o-line man.
Being strong and jacked is a plus.
But if you can't get past the trenches?
Nothing matters.
Running back Vision 🔦

DM "IQ" If you are looking to improve your game!
You can't get what you hate on.
So if someone is getting more playtime than you?
Be proud of them.
Show love and model their success.
Understand why they're succeeding.
What they're doing on and off the field.
Want success?
Be proud, happy for others and model it.
Open field tackling isn't easy.
Theirs more room for error.
Give too much time for the ball carrier to make a decision?
He's off to the races.
So here's the 3 things you need to focus on to be a great open field tackler so you can make big plays in the open field :
>>🧵<<
Want to recover faster in between plays?
Breathe from your nose.
It'll bring your heart rate down, keep you focused and decrease recovery time.
Be a professional breather and you can out last 99% of mouth breathers.
How many linebackers you know train their mind, eyes and linebacker skills?
I'm guessing a few.
How many linebackers you know train just muscle, strength and explosivity?
I'm guessing a lot.
Which linebackers stand out?
The ones who train their mind & body.
The cost of being a great linebacker?
Everything you DON’T do.
• You don’t watch your opponent’s game film.
• You dismiss learning techniques for different situations.
• You don’t take time to learn the game.
Read that again.
2 linebackers have the same physical attributes from :
• Speed
• Strength
• How big they are
But one is always near the ball while the other get's
• Washed out of a play
• Held by the oline
The difference?
... 👇
If you're going to pick the offense part you'll need to watch film by :
• Down and distance (1st and long /2nd and medium / 3rd and short)
• Pick up on tendencies.
• Watch them vs similar defense.
• Ask yourself what you'd do better.
I guarantee you'll make more plays.
Being Coachable isn't just saying “yes coach” to everything he tells you.
Being coachable is also being able to look past HOW your coach is saying it,
And listen to WHAT he’s saying.
Emotions flare up during practice and games.
Look past the scream.
Take in WHAT he’s saying.
Being a great blitzer is a trait every linebacker must have.
The coach is calling on you to make a big play.
Literally handing you an opportunity.
So I put together 3 pre-snap tips to make your next blitz a sack or TFL :
>> 🧵 <<
A lot of linebackers are great at making tackles in the trenches.
Everyone bunched up together.
But the biggest indicator of a great tackler?
How well you can tackle in the open field.
How to get double, triple even quadruple the practice reps without actually stepping into the drill:
Watch your team mates rep drills.
Every single one of them. Stop yapping during practice.
Watch the player doing the rep.
Listen to coach’s feedback to perfect your reps.
Here’s how we train our LBs this summer.
4 lifts/week
2 COD/ 2 LB skills /Week
1 Speed Day / week
1 Yoga / week
1 IQ Development / Week
Heavy focus on movement efficiency, Quickness, Reaction, Technique and explosiveness!
Not every play is yours to make.
Play your role.
If you're meant to fill the gap, fill the gap. If you're meant to blitz, blitz. If you're meant to cover, cover.
Coach has you there for a reason.
If the plays comes to you, make your play.
If not? Stick to your role.
You can go from back up to all star in one summer.
Don’t underestimate what you can do with a few months of :
• Curiosity to learn
• Consistency
• Hard work
Most linebackers think getting :
• Faster
• Stronger
• More jacked
Makes them more plays.
But really they just help when you have the foundations of :
• Game IQ
• Proper technique
• Movement efficiency
Locked in.
Get your mind right.
2) What plays do they target linebackers?
Look at the athlete in your position.
Mike. Will. Or Sam.
Whichever it is.
Watch him play and how he beats the offense and when they beat him.
3) Who is the offense based around?
Who are they giving the ball to often?
Why are they giving the ball to him?
When does he come into your zone and how can you make a play?
Did you know “blitz” is a term originated from war?
It means “an intensive or sudden military attack.”
Remember this next time your coach calls on you to get in the trenches.
There's no time to waste.
Get past the trenches and blow the play up.
Steal the workout Linebacker Prototype athletes are doing Week 1:
• Med ball work
• Multi-directional movement
• Multi-directional low intensity plyometrics
• Transition footwork
• Movement mechanics & efficiency
We are building the foundations of movement.
You know how some linebackers are always in the backfield or involved with a play?
You might think it’s because he’s big, strong and fast…
But in reality?
It’s because his knowledge of the game is better.
Here’s what I mean (and how you can apply it too)
>>🧵<<
Plying linebacker is primarily a lateral game.
So if you’re losing your footing, losing balance and losing time because you’re slow out of a break?
It’s time to start training your lateral movement technique, efficiency and strength.
The most underrated muscle linebackers don't train (that they should) :
Their eyes.
Train your eyes to:
• Read plays
• Find the ball
• Stay locked in man coverage
You’re a hard hitter.
You run through running backs.
You fumble footballs.
You terrorize quarterbacks.
And blitz in the trenches.
You make plays that win games.
Runs interceptions for pick sixes.
You’re THAT guy.
Start acting like it.
You're a linebacker which means you play defense (duh)
But that doesn't mean you have to play defensive. Play OFFENSIVE.
Take the play to the offense rather than covering grass. Go. Block shed. Cause a fumble. Make a hit.
Take it to them.
What you've been neglecting is what costs you a starting position.
Neglecting:
• Movement
• Watching film
• Specific technique
Will keep you on the sidelines.
Not what you want, right?
Get to it. Tick tock, only a few months left to the season.
This is what most linebackers think:
“Oh I’m in the gym 24/7”
“My bench increased”
“My biceps are big”
Like bigger muscles will make you a better linebacker.
A linebacker isn’t defined by his muscle.
He’s defined by the plays he makes.
Which involves READING and REACTING.
You don’t need to remember every play when watching film.
Find the top formations the offense runs and the top plays they run out of it.
You’ll have more clarity, focus and ideas of what to expect on the field.
The biggest reason linebackers miss tackles
• Lack of confidence so they hesitate
• Don’t trust their speed so they slow down to make a tackle
Which leads to more time for the ball carrier to make a decision.
You’re like a 2 for 1 special for ball carriers...
Get right.
IQ isn’t just “watching film”
It’s :
Reaction time
What your game speed is
How fast you process information
How alert and aware you are of your surroundings
If you had 1hr to watch game film on your opponent.
You wouldn't try to remember all plays.
You'd look for plays the offense targets your position in different downs and distances.
Watch how the LB reads and reacts.
Succeeds? Model him.
Fails? Plan how you can do better.
Get your mind right by getting your Game IQ up.
Don't play the game purely off instinct and strength.
Play with the right mind that puts you in position to make big time plays for your team.
If you are a Linebacker and you have the ability to pass rush /Blitz well.
YOUR VALUE INCREASES BY 1000%
You become extremely valuable to any DC in the country!
AT ANY LEVELS !
What motivates you to be the best linebacker?
Think and sit on it.
When you find your answer?
Double down and go hard.
Your dream is one crazy season away.
The work isn’t always sexy and Instagram post worthy.
Don’t neglect the fundamentals as a linebacker :
• Watching film
• Working movement technique
• Learning plays calls and your role by heart
The basics will take you further than any course can.
If you are actually serious about making Football a career.
Learn how to play
Mack - Sam- Will and Edge.
Football is a game of opportunity.
Some don’t make it because they weren’t patient enough.
And some don’t make it because
They weren’t ready for it.
Stay ready!
The biggest mistake linebackers make going into an off season :
They shut down Hudl and work on just weights and speed.
Understand your Hudl is a tool to become better through self analysis.
The game isn't linear.
You move around the field in every direction.
Make sure to include multi-directional work into your training so you don't :
• Lose your footing moving laterally
• Take long to come out of a change of direction cut
• Keep up with the flow of the play
Most linebackers don't know how to watch film properly.
They sit down and ask themselves "what am I looking for?"
Then get confused at meetings with Coach and lost during plays.
So I put together the 6 main elements of watching film and the questions to ask yourself :
>>🧵<<
You might be 2nd string on the team but you gotta be 1st string in your head.
Dead simple.
You either living it in your mind already and putting in reps for the field or settling for 2nd.
Get yours.
Training, IQ and movement are important.
But if you don’t take care of your:
• Nutrition
• Rest & recovery
• Mental health
It’ll be much harder to continue playing.
Stay healthy, stay right.
Instead of being jealous about someone else's success...
Stick around them. Be happy for them. Learn from them.
Energy is contagious and you should be positioning yourself to win.
We know football can lead to injuries.
Although unfortunate it usually gives an opportunity for another LB to fill and make their name.
That being said, don't fall in love with your assigned name (Mike/Sam/Will)
Love being a linebacker.
Fill in every role.
Stay ready.
Best way to keep your head in the game?
Focus on breathing.
Everything else will come naturally.
• Maintains ability to focus and see opportunities.
• Lowers your heart rate.
• Keeps you on the field.
The second half of the season is upon us.
Which means guys are getting :
• Tired and lazy
• Comfortable
• Sloppy
How to overcome this and stay on top of your game?
Focus on :
• Recovery
• Technique
• Movement
While others fall victim to "the slump"
In a world where every linebacker focuses on getting :
• Bigger
• Faster
• Stronger
Seperate yourself by focusing on :
• Game IQ
• Movement Efficiency
• Proper movement technique
3 reasons you feel unprepared for games:
• You didn't watch film
• You don't 100% know your assignments
• You didn't give it your all in the off-season & practice
Your subconscious knows when it's not ready.
Because it knows the body lacks the practice to carry out tasks.
Great Linebackers have one thing in common .
They process Information faster/ better than anybody else. 🔄
WE ARE COMING OUT WITH AN
IQ MENTAL PROCESSING COURSE🧠
From Film Study to Play diagnosis.
Your game will elevate 🤝
If you suck at watching game film, here’s 4 things to stop now...
Don't :
- Try to remember every play
- Try to break it all down in one session
- Show up without the intention of learning
- Come unprepared to draw formations, concepts, plays and take notes
You'll be better at securing tackles when you know and understand what a running back wants and needs.
Time and leverage.
Get to him fast and shut him
down quick.
Hang out with Defensive Linemen
Sit down in offensive rooms
Talk football with Running backs
Learn from other positions.
It will take your game to the next level!
Tomorrow's the start of a new week.
Another week filled with opportunity for you to grow, improve and excel at your craft.
Don't waste it because there's 1000s of other linebackers who are getting after it.
Let's work men. ⚔️
Good morning!
A new week presents itself for you to get better.
Better for yourself, your team and even your family.
It starts TODAY.
Get right or get left this week.
Hard pill to swallow for linebackers.
If you keep saying “this is my year” but you’re not:
• Training
• Resting & recovering
• Working on the basics
It won’t be your year.
Words mean nothing without action.
Being a linebacker doesn’t just require the ability to tackle.
It also requires:
• Crystal clear vision
• Fast mental processes
• Confidence and consistency
5) What are they like in the redzone?
Are they pass heavy or run heavy?
What side of the field do they usually go to?
Do they use different schemes when close to the redzone?
I've gotten a lot of questions regarding :
• How to watch film and analyze opponents
• What to focus on
• What to look for
And much more.
So I'm launching a course for you who feel like they're wasting time...
👇
Playing linebacker is about change of directions and transitions.
Playing Linebacker has became a lateral game.
Your summer training should be more focus on COD days than Speed days!
When you swear by becoming the best linebacker you can be,
Understand that comes with:
• Prioritizing sleep
• Eating clean and healthy
• Stretching and mobility work
And not just:
• Technique work
• Weight lifting
• Sprinting
You MUST take care of the body and mind to
Remember losing a mission when playing video games?
What'd you do after?
Searched a walkthrough on YouTube, right?
This is the equivalent of watching game film when missing out on plays.
If you can do it for video games, you can do it for football.
It's a great day to think about your competition out working you.
Putting in the reps.
Sprinting down the track.
Studying film.
Do you feel the fire within growing? The anger?
Good.
Get to work.
Not sure how watch game film to improve your read and react instinct on the field?
Focus on these 3 things:
• Plays your position gets targeted
• The go-to formations in situations
• Their go-to players
Just because the ball carrier is off to the races doesn’t mean he won the race.
You have the choice in the moment to run like a maniac and catch up.
Or give up and hope a “faster” player catches up.
On you.
"You get what you put in" is one of my favorite sayings.
If you're not getting the:
• Play time you hoped for
• Tackles you missed
• INTs you dropped
Check how much work you put in before complaining.
Underrated elements of training that seperates good to great linebackers:
• Mobility and flexibility
• Proper linebacker technique
• Reading offenses by watching film
Being strong, fast and jacked is great for linebackers.
But here’s 4 traits great linebackers have that you can actually work on starting today :
• Faith
• Patience
• Resiliency
• Confidence
