Professor of Chemistry, Ultrafast Laser Spectroscopist, Founder and Director of LibreTexts, father of two daughters, two apathetic cats, and one dumb dog.
Well, that is interesting.
@CHEGG
just sent us a DMCA (pull down request) to remove openly licensed content from the
@LibreTexts
since some students uploaded our content to their servers without citation (as part of their business model) that they are claiming as theirs.
wow.
We are making slow progress in building the "LibreTexts in a Box" raspberry PI system. Get the box and get access to 100,000 LibreTexts textbook pages offline. Ideal for students in rural area with no high speed access and especially including developing countries = equity.
I am honored to receive a
@ucdavis
Chancellor's Innovation Award for work on building the LibreTexts project. I look forward to the future with the support of Campus and
@UCDLandS
College in promoting affordable education for our students.
Congratulations to
@UCDChem
professor Delmar Larsen
@LibreTexts
who has received a Chancellor’s Innovation Award for helping eliminate the high-cost textbooks for students.
I got almost no sleep last night, but I got over 100
#OER
LibreTexts books uploaded to the printer so we can (freely) distribute at
#OpenEd19
. we will be packing, so if you want a free LibreTexts book - so you can "love it and pet it and squeeze it and call it George" - find us!
The LibreText Project is fortunate to accept a $5 million Open Textbooks Pilot Program award from the Department of Education funded by Congress in the 2018 Fiscal Year omnibus spending bill.
I am a Full Professor now! "...the time has finally come: Dr. Larsen truly deserves this overdue promotion. Joining a majority of the participating faculty and strongly supportive extramural reviewers. ... The vote was nine in favor and none opposed."
We are giddy with the newest LibreTexts library to be released soon - LibreTexts Ukrayinska. This will be a Ukrainian-language translation of the 300,000 OER pages in our corpus for Ukrainian students impacted by the war.
I am pleasantly surprised and honored to be a finalist for the
#OEAwards
this year. I am blessed to be part of the
#OER
community over the past 15 years including internalizing its "sharing is caring" model and adopting its "it take's a village" mentality.
#thefutureisopen
Must be doing something right. Our
#OER
Download Center has been up for each library for less than a month and has logged 19,671 downloads (of PDFs, LMS Import Cartridges & Publishing Packs). And we have not told anyone about it yet (guess I just did).
Happy Happy Joy Joy! We got a $1M California Education Learning Lab Innovation Grant award to increase student success by creating an open-education-resource adaptive learning platform and by developing editable, culturally responsive learning and homework modules for Chemistry.
Yippie! LibreTexts now has real-time accessibility checker built directly into the LibreTexts editor. Editors can directly and easily check their
#OER
pages for many critical a11y mistakes common in following University Design (which should be everyone).
I know personally most of the authors of the content they are claiming they own - no grey area here.
@Chegg
,
@CheggHelp
,
@cheggdotorg
, you should be ashamed trying to do this sort of crap - focus on your current lawsuit.
How many different ways can you steal people's content?
Data rocks! I significantly underestimated the number of PDF downloads we shared each month. Now that we are tracking them more carefully, I can see that my estimate was 10x too low. LibreTexts distributes 300,000 PDFs of
#OER
monthly now. Nice!
"I swear, under penalty of perjury, that the information in the notification is accurate and Chegg, Inc. is
the owner of the copyrighted material involved."
This is complete and utter BS. Does that mean anything legally or just mumbo-jumbo to scare people?
I love that "new shirt smell". We are stocked with shirts for
#OpenEd
. First come, first served... with premeeting attendees getting first dibs. We are ready to rock Phoenix.
I am honored that the LibreTexts project was recently recognized by
@ucdavis
for it innovation and societal impact. It is a labor of love for thousands of contributors and developers over the past 14.5 years with close to a a billion views to date. We look forward to the future..
.
@LibreTexts
has developed an innovative solution to eliminate the barrier of high-cost
#textbooks
on
#education
and increase accessibility to students around the world.
#innovation
In this video Professor Delmar Larsen talks about LibreTexts' sharing and caring model.
@UCDLandS
Thrilled about
@MindTouch
's experimental machine translation that can convert any of
#LibreTexts
330k
#OER
pages into 12 different languages. It is an excellent start to a more comprehensive translation effort. Excited to
#FreeTheTextbook
both nationally and globally!
LibreTexts is glad to support
@solanocommcolle
Corrections Education Program with 600 physical books this year alone. They are committed to help educate incarcerated students and we are committed to helping them. Sometimes free access to online
#OER
is not enough.
The irony here is thick.
@CHEGG
probably thought
@LibreTexts
was just a small organization operating like how they do (stealing other people's IP), not that we were built within the University of California, Davis. of which they have "borrowed" numerous IP from. They got gall.
Well, that is interesting.
@CHEGG
just sent us a DMCA (pull down request) to remove openly licensed content from the
@LibreTexts
since some students uploaded our content to their servers without citation (as part of their business model) that they are claiming as theirs.
wow.
Six year ago, my daughter was all up for helping me build the LibreTexts (nee' ChemWiki). Now, she doesn't publicly admit who I am when it is used in her middle school class. Sigh.
The ADAPT homework system has been expanding in scope and power over the past two years and later on this year we will release the phone apps that can be used to submit homework (both autograded and open-ended) & in-class clicker system. We are very excited about this feature.
When we grow up, we want to be
#OER
textbook hotspots!
And
#OpenEd19
will be our first time trying. The team will "walking hotspots" broadcasting LibreTexts books to any unsuspecting conference attendees. All you need is a wifi ready device and you can read.
A core belief of the LibreTexts team is that educating students should be a public duty and that America's education infrastructure (& its students) is not a "market" to bilk for profit. Just got letter from IRS documenting our 501(c)(3) status as a not-for-profit entity.
I just hired half my chemistry class for the LibreTexts making the student team over 100. We are ramping up harvesting and curating. The Accessibility team is also scaling up (into four sub teams addressing (1) alt-texts, (2) tables (3) technology (4) general).
Tucked into California's investment in public education is a line item for scaling up the ADAPT homework system. With the $4M, we will scale up ADAPT's capabilities (library and tech) and make it free to all Californian students and faculty. More about this in the near future...
Free meals for every kid.
More tutoring.
More arts and music.
More counselors in schools.
More before and after school programs.
We are literally transforming California’s education system.
Quick update. Since support from the US Dept. of Ed., the LibreTexts project has doubled the number of OER pagesviews distributed to the world to a total of 432 million since 2007. This is about 1.5 millennia of student reading And we are going strong at >12M per month.
Due to multiple requests, the LibreTexts talk at
#OpenEd18
on the last day at the last hour will present the goals and organization underlying our proposal that we submitted to the Dept. of Education OER grant that was recently awarded.
Please join WeBWorK, Libretexts, and Rederly as we present a standalone WeBWorK problem renderer that sets the foundation to use WeBWorK problems across the OER ecosystem & as an embedded micro-service.

... and more "art of the day" Our master graphics designer is working overtime in illustrating our
#OER
chemistry suite. This is from the biochemistry text to be released next summer. These free books are big, solid, and pretty.
Hey
#OER
and
#OpenEd
advocates, your friendly Outreach Coordinator just made her OpenEd and OER info guide shareable to anyone using Springshare's

. Feel free to "borrow" and share freely!
#LibreTexts
Massive Kudos to
@ucdavis
Physics department which saved close to $750k over the past 2.5 years by constructing, adoption and curating introductory physics
#OER
books and lab manuals (25 books) on the LibreTexts. True leadership in action!
@UCDLandS
As part of our ongoing efforts to showcase new
#OER
books in the LibreTexts corpus, we are starting to put these announcement notices out.
Check our
@stevenjluck
's new electroencephalogram text on the SocialSci library.
Start of the year means end of the year reports. Initial stats show that
@LibreTexts
delivered 99,379,617
#OER
pageviews in 2019 with a growth of 59.8% over 2018. SocialSci library showed greatest gain @ 1039%. It hurts us to miss the 100 million mark. ;( Look forward to 2020.
The textbook company discontinued the edition of the textbook I used in my courses. My students had to purchase the new edition of this text at $250. I collaborating with LibreTexts immediately, cut ties with my book distributor and started writing my
#OER
text."
@ergstee72
We just set up an online bookstore to distribute physical
#LibreTexts
texts to faculty/students. It is still very raw, but we are excited! 0% margin - 100% costs go to printing/distribution - and can share all customized
#OER
texts.
#YourTextYourWay
I was just told that Mastering Chemistry "appears to be $130 PER semester now..." Is that true?
If so (and even if not), the ADAPT homework system is for you. Free to use and growing in chemistry scope. Contact me for more details.
What does it mean when my students found images of me online and made them into emote emojis on the class discord server? They even found and ripped images from my macarena dancing cow video I did 8 years ago.
We are in our beta testing stage, but we are excited to release soon our OER Remixer that will enable super easy and rapid remixing of the largest OER library on the net today. More details at
@cccoer
webinar tomorrow at noon Pacific time. More to come.
I feel ashamed that my Vulcan salutation is so much poorer than
@ucdavis
@Chancellor_May
's salutation. Nonetheless, I always revel in meeting a fellow trekkie. BTW: Pic from receiving the Chancellor's Innovation Award a few weeks ago.
May the odds be forever in our favor.... California proposal on Building and integrating new Adaptive Learning infrastructure into the LibreTexts is now formally pending. Now, I sleep.
Rarely do any three members of the LibreTexts team meet in person, but last Thursday was one such "nexus event" in San Diego with
@jrogers9986
, Henry Agnew (now UCSF grad student), and myself. Always great to remember colleagues live in the real world (not just the zoom screen).
Got
#OER
? We are strongly against pay-to-play models for accessing platform/program's development talks. We treat ours like the OER they are -
#open
to all. The 16 videos from this year's
#LibreFest2022
meeting are now posted on our YouTube channel.
The
#LibreTexts
team is honored to be awarded two
@OpenEdGlobal
awards for Open Curation & Open Infrastructure this year. If you are unfamiliar with our
#OER
project, come check it out.
The Future is truly open!
Thrilled to announce
#LibreTexts
has been awarded two (!)
@OpenEdGlobal
awards for Open Curation & Open Infrastructure:
LibreTexts - OE Awards for Excellence
We tested out the ADAPT homework system last quarter for my Quantum Mech class. My old students in their next p-chem class were in ADAPT withdrawals. I am excited when we open this system up for all.
I am not hearing much public conversation in the open community about the regrowth of textbooks expenditures in the US. I figure it is due to publishers adjusting to changes with Inclusive/Equitable access and other mechanisms. Anyone have other ideas?
Proposal submitted! I pray for mercy from the reviewer-gods and I will sacrifice a goat tonight at home in case. We want to build an app so any student anywhere can access/use LibreTexts content offline irrespective of internet access or personal economics =
#OER
for the masses
My students are making quantum memes instead of studying quantum mechanics for their midterm this Friday. I am currently in a superposition of sadness and laughter.
Congrats!
@HenryJakubowski
and Patty Flatt outlined their work in a recent
@ASBMB
today perspective. Their
#OER
Fundamentals of Biochemistry textbook - build w/ US Dept of Ed support - has grown to four volumes and 2400 pages.
Yippie! LibreTexts has logged ~948 million pageview of OER since we were founded as the ChemWiki. We will celebrate our 15-year Jubilee (birthday) in March when we reach 1 billion pageviews. After all, sharing is caring and we care a lot about affordable education.
One of our goals this summer is to release the
#OER
Learning Analytics Console, which is an interactive dashboard for authors to monitor how student engage with their LT book and homework (via ADAPT). This provides direct feedback to optimize pedagogies and text efficacies.
Happy to present the LibreTexts AutoAttributor system at
#OEWeek
. It is native on all pages and ramps up easy construction/curation/usage of OER and simplfy addressing attribution requirements. Pages with text copied from other 320,000 pages in our
#OER
library are auto-tracked.
A major deliverable of our Dept. of Ed grant is to build the
#OER
texts for a full
@AmerChemSociety
BS curriculum from start to end. This requires making (lots of) figures. Of which, many are interactive and some outright pretty, but all are openly licensed.
Dianne Bennett saved $1/4 million on her GOB classes since 2014. Her new Textmap for Wade's O-chem will be going through its first text-drive at
@SacCityCollege
. Looks like they will be the first Chemistry Department to be fully
#OER
(to our knowledge) very soon. Rock on!
We have been fielding a lot of questions about the ADAPT Homework system as part of the greater LibreVerse system. It is a mixture of Adaptive Learning, Culturally Responsible Pedagogy, Learning Analytics, Clicker Tech, and a bit more. For more info see:
Working on building
#OER
Electron Paramagnetic Resonance pages in the chemistry LibreTexts library for my grad spectroscopy class.
@rdavbritt
Am I an honorary magnetic resonance spectroscopist now?
Helping disadvantages students is our primary reason for existing - in the US and abroad.
"I been studying from your website and I am beginning to fall in love with the physics again" - A student in Africa.
Finally a solution I like to handle ancillary materials for
#OER
texts on LibreTexts. I always thought it was crude to a book to host a repository (H5P or otherwise). To fix this, we just added the ability for authors to add ancillary materials to Commons&Conductor project pages.

Gotta love Canadians!
"After my initial use of LibreTexts, the adoption spread across the department for all of general chemistry. We estimate that in the past three years we have helped first-year students at our university save over a quarter-million dollars."
@McCollumBrett
We did it! First steps in making the
#LibreTexts
an independent not-for-profit entity. It sort of feels that submitting our articles of incorporation to the state is a Faustian bargain, but we really needed the freedom; our mission does not change.
#TheFutureIsOpen

Congratulations Thangarajah from Mount Royal University in Calgary who received the "Open Education Champion award" from the Student Association
@mountroyal4u
for her work on two
#OER
texts (Mathematical Reasoning and Higher Arithmetic) on the
@LibreTexts
Math Library. WAY TO GO!
Greetings OER advocates! Beginning today you can test drive the beta version of the brand new
#LibreTexts
Remixer! The power to remix the OER universe is now available at your fingertips. Check it out and let us know...
Never fear! OpenMan is here to save the day! Able to leap tall stacks of books in at least two bounds. Faster than speeding textbook sale. More powerful than an inclusive access opt out.
Five minutes after getting a gift from a student after my class was over today, the universe decided to maximize the available microstates of my life. All I can do is admit the mug was indeed correct.
@James___Morris
@andrechemist
@Chegg
So far they are fishing. I doubt this would go far... but I can be wrong. It is just the shear audacity of them to do this given that stealing is their business model.
Nice! We just migrated the Studio (
#OER
H5P platform) into LibreOne single-sign-on. Now, all L1 accounts will have instant and easy access to these interactives to build "textbooks of the future".
And studio is centralized to avoid fragmentation issues.
@heydebigale
@Chegg
WIN!

What is the first sentence of the first email of the day?
"First of all: I am using A LOT Libertexts, my students saved A LOT OF MONEY! Thank you!"
I love these emails....
The
@LibreTexts
platform just integrated the
@BeeLineReader
tool to help students read more quickly and easily on screens. Students can activate it using the "Readability" button at the top of our pages.
For more information on BeeLine, see .
We have not publicly announced it, but we have integrated Jupyter into the LibreTexts so students can work directly with sci. programming in their textbooks (e.g., STEM based). We are still in an infancy of this effort, but really excited.
To help Faculty, Instructional Designers, Librarians, and other
#OER
advocates master the growing capabilities of the LibreTexts platform, we are hosting a free two-day virtual workshop July 16-17, 2020. All are invited!
#TheFutureIsOpen
.
1,071 OER books have been machine translated and organized into the Ukrayinska library to help displaced students in the war in Europe. Massive thanks to
@Amazon
and
@NICECXone
for their support of this effort.
Quick fact. This award focused on the
#OER
Remixer, a tool we built for easy remixing and capitalizing on the growing corpus of LibreTexts libraries (~500,000 pages). It was built by Henry Agnew, an undergraduate student, now a grad student in chemistry at
@UCSD
. He rocks!
#LibreTexts
' open repository of remixable and curatable
#OER
content, the largest on the net, just reached 600 million pageviews and 1/3 million pages (and close to 5 millennia of reading). After all, sharing is caring.
#TheFutureIsOpen
#FreeTheTextbook
After a crappy a day of nonstop fighting it was it nice to get kudos from students, "... the overall content of this course was really worth the struggle nonetheless. The overall structure of the class in combination with the usage of your libretext site was really helpful."
I love updating figures in my spectroscopy OER textbook with new ones that Ümit made. All SVG and all downloadable as OER should be (and editable). Thanks Ümit!
We decided to augment our pamphlets/stickers/buttons at this year's
#OpenEd
and distribute OER textbooks too - both physically and ethereally (i.e. via wi-fi). Come find us and help us lighten our luggage costs back to California.
Congraulations. Dietmar Kennepohl (
@AthabascaU
) won the "Award of Excellence for Distance Education Materials" for
#OER
organic chemistry content from LibreTexts at the Pan-Commonwealth Forum in Edinburgh
#YourTextYourWay
Soft introduction.... Our new LibreStudio is now live . It support construction and distribution at scale of H5P problems (). This is part of the ADAPT homework system, but is available to all LibreNet campuses and California faculty (supported by state).
Keith Curry (
@Iamkeithcurry
) gave an enlightening and motivating closing keynote at the
#calOER2021
meeting last week. He is a living case study in progressive administration thinking and in facilitating large-scale adoption of

at
@compton_college
The LibreTexts team is excited to be a finalist in this category. Curating is a often difficult for the people in the community to appreciate since it is hard to see in action. We are happy since we spend much of our time on this effort. Kudos to OEG for making this category.
Most "remixes" (e.g. ALL content in a customized
#OER
book have same license) are really "collections" (at least one component - e.g. an image - has a different license). So we will fix that soon on the
@LibreTexts
as we will consider every book a collection default.
What does it mean when all your students workers decide to change their name on discord chat server to your name?
If you join our real-time chat server () and want assistance with all things
@LibreTexts
, you can have multiple Delmars help you. Lucky You.
Inclusive/Equitable Access Statistics of interest. This quarter at UCD alone, LibreTexts formally handled about 3.2k students (using standard $100/student that is $320,000 saved).
What's interesting is that 40% of students opted out of the program if given an
#OER
alternative.
