Bill Gates on bitcoin in Clubhouse: "I haven't chosen to invest in it... I buy vaccines, I invest in malaria medicine, in companies that make things.. I don't buy something just thinking someone else will pay more for it later."
Alternate history thought experiment: ⚛️
If nuclear power was discovered today, there’d be dancing in the streets, people crying with joy, young generations becoming more optimistic about the future, etc.
It would feel like the breakthrough we’ve all been waiting for. Forget
Hey Fintwit, you may not be aware, but there's a big connection between Fintwit & Ukraine.
Most of the Koyfin team lives in Ukraine & is over there right now. I know many of you are using their software every day & may not have known that, so I thought it was important to share
Just realized that I haven't heard a single Joe Rogan episode since he went exclusive to Spotify.
I wonder what effect that has had on his audience... Am I in a tiny tiny minority, or is this more widespread? If it is, will it make it harder to get big stars to go exclusive?
@energybants
It's one thing for Germany to want to destroy their own grid and industrial base, but why must they try to export that madness elsewhere?
Maybe the Russian money to support anti-nuclear efforts was even more effective than we thought...
I've got some big news! 📰
I took the job of Head of Infinite Media at O'Shaughnessy Ventures! (
@osventuresllc
) 💡
Very very happy to be working with
@jposhaughnessy
and the great team he has assembled! 💚 🥃
More details in this:
Many see being convinced of changing a position as a defeat (my arguments were weaker, I lose this one...). Make sure you see it as a victory; you should *want* to be convinced by stronger arguments. Defeat is when better arguments *don't* change your mind.
E.O. Wilson has died.
"The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic emotions, medieval institutions, and god-like technology" — E. O. Wilson, 2009
What Fintwit needs to do is start a movement to encourage companies to change the format of conference calls: Just release the scripted part in the press release, and **go straight to Q&A**. Some already do it, but they all should. Also, have transcripts of all calls on IR sites.
Almost all my favorite finance/investing people tilt way more 'collaborative' than 'competitive' with peers. I don't think it's just that they're nicer; they get an advantage from the higher velocity of exchange of ideas, feedback, connections, resources they can call on, etc.
@TurnerNovak
The best OSINT people are insane. I saw one identify countries from being shown a random streetview image from around the world for 0.5 seconds each like 20 times in a row 🤯
How much do you think Google has on you? Your every thought typed into search, emails, calendars, GPS locations/trips habits, prob some docs and spreadsheets, contacts, third party websites visited via cookies, photos, etc. Did people not already know this?
I'm not American, but I'm still thankful that a nobody like me can sit at home in pyjamas and learn from, and have interesting conversations with, really interesting people around the world. For all the crap social media gets, it has changed my life significantly for the better.
If you’ve never seen ‘Edge of Tomorrow’ (2014) and like action sci-fi at all, I recommend it. I don’t think it gets the attention it deserves, even if it has grown in status a bit since it came out. I wish they made more fun films like this...
Coinbase: "shares in the largest crypto exchange in the U.S. are changing hands on the Nasdaq Private Market at $303 a piece.. That implies a total company value of about $77 billion – greater than Intercontinental Exchange Inc., the owner of the New York Stock Exchange." 🤔
@DylanoA4
So true. It's not because we can do something that we can explain how and why.
So much of the industry built around asking successful people how they did it is really just finding out a bunch of post hoc rationalization and not the actual source of anything.
I just published my first newsletter (I know, how unoriginal ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ).
Three sections, "Finance & Business", "Science & Technology", and "The Arts", so it's easy to skip what you don't want.
If you want to check it out:
For years, I've had a piece of paper with this drawing taped to the corner of my bedroom mirror. I become blind to it after a while, then rediscover it periodically. Whenever I do, it's always good to be reminded, because I don't think we're wired to think like that by default.
People really underestimate the amount of land and materials required for wind and solar. All that steel and concrete and high-purity silicon that needs high-temp natural gas furnaces in China to make can take years to pay back its energy debt, especially if you put solar at high
That's clever. Nvidia doing video call compression using generative adversarial networks to basically create a model of your face and then re-animate it using only some key points rather than a whole flood of pixels. Can use tiny fraction of bandwidth as regular codecs $nvda
This is so great and wholesome! Give this guy a raise and have him train dozens of others!

@primalpoly
Wait, how does this pass the smell test? Only 365 deaths from all rifles in the US over a whole year on average? this sounds like propaganda
So Facebook is going to change it's name to "Meta" or something like that, and everybody will just keep calling it Facebook, just like with Google and Alphabet, right?
Wife and I started looking for a house to buy this year. Any general tips for home buyers, non-obvious things to look out for, common mistakes, best ways to negotiate a good price, etc? Thanks.
Before I had kids, weekends were to relax from the week.
Now, by Sunday night I’m so exhausted, I need the school week to begin so I can recuperate…
I know it’s not exactly a novel or unique observation, but it’s still true, and it’s still impossible to really get across to
Rumors of my demise have been greatly exaggerated.
Apologies to those who were celebrating my disappearance.
Cheers to the others, thank you for your help during this stressful moment! 💚🥃
Lesson from this: Never take sarcasm for granted in a world ruled by ML moderation.
John Huber (
@JohnHuber72
) has a fee structure that should be way more widespread ("0% management fee and a 25% performance fee over a 6% compounding hurdle"). Everybody claims to follow Buffett, but few do the actually difficult things like this. Kudos to him!
@dollarsanddata
Well, it does, but not in that way.
It takes a while to learn how to invest properly and to know yourself and how you react to various situations and what works for you, so the experience you gain when you have little is extremely valuable for later when you have more.
My second boy, Alexandre, was born not too long before midnight on March 17. A healthy 9lbs 10oz big guy. His middle name will be 'Cohen' for Leonard Cohen. It's incredible what women go through during childbirth...
