Here's a (recreated) diagram of how the 2D elements are set up in one of my Maya scenes for my Hobie shots! Normally, you would do this in post with compositing software, but since we needed to have all the animation represented for approval in playblast, this is what we did...

@gwenstacying Not to my knowledge, but if it's a coincidence it's a good one! This is my shot too, here's a fun fact: Hobie is not animated at all in this shot except for his master control (body) which is translating on 3s.

There's an Easter Egg from my 2D roughs that sort of survived in the final: I had some type in the background that said "Nevermind that Crap" followed by "Here's a Single Chord!" As a reference to the Sex Pistols. A small portion of it can be seen in the first frame!
