Dr. Daniel Hale Williams was a pioneering Black surgeon. In 1893, he performed one of the 1st successful open-heart surgeries. He founded Provident Hosp, the 1st Black owned & operated hosp in the U.S. creating opportunities for Black medical professionals & equitable healthcare.

On this day in 1960, four black college students staged a sit-in at a whites-only lunch counter at Woolworth's in Greensboro, NC. They sparked a national movement across the country. Instructions were simple: sit quietly and wait to be served. #BlackHistoryMonth2025

Henry “Box” Brown 1815-1897 was an enslaved man from Virginia who escaped to freedom at the age of 33 by arranging to have himself mailed in a wooden crate in 1849 to abolitionists in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Please share this story with our students, regardless of color.

Lena Richard 1892-1950 was a chef, cookbook author, restaurateur, frozen food entrepreneur, & television host from New Orleans, Louisiana. In 1949, Richard became the 1st Black woman to host her own television cooking show. Her show aired from October 1949 - November 1950.

Elbert Frank Cox 1895–1969 was an American mathematician. He was the first Black American—perhaps the first Black man in the world—to receive a PhD in mathematics, which he earned at Cornell University in 1925. Let’s celebrate Black excellence & Black History!
