Absolutely over the moon to share that I have been awarded a
@NERCscience
Independent Research Fellowship 😱
From September, I'll be joining
@ES_UCL
to work on elucidating diversity dynamics in Cenozoic marine tropical hotspots!🪸
Grant rejection day🙃
I'm not really one to post about this stuff here but one reviewer highlighted the lack of a publication from my MSc as a weakness.
Come on, don't do this. Not everyone had the opportunity or resources to publish their MSc project.
Am I tainted forever?😅
This wasn’t always easy to keep up, especially during the thesis writing period… but, I am quite proud of this little achievement! Thank you
@duolingo
for the free education!
We have some exciting news to share! We are in the process of developing 'palaeoverse', a community-driven R package📦📈🌍🦕
The aim of the 📦 is to provide generic functions to streamline analyses, and improve code readability and reproducibility.

New paper alert!🚨
A Phanerozoic gridded dataset for palaeogeographic reconstructions 🌐
Global Plate Models are widely used in the Earth Sciences to reconstruct the past geographic position of geological samples, but their application is not trivial...
Our (

sepkoski 0.0.1 is now on CRAN📦!
The package is provided to support teaching exercises and an example dataset for function documentation.
Features include:
- Access to Sepkoski's compendium🐚
- Plotting Sepkoski's curve 📈

to plots in R. 🕷️
But did you know that you can also use the package to conveniently add other images to plots? 😉

I am thrilled to share that the
@ThePalAss
has awarded me a Grant-in-Aid. Fantastic news at this time of year😁
Next year
@ThePalaeoverse
team and I will run a R workshop and hackathon for palaeobiologists. More details in the New Year!...
Until then, happy holidays everyone!🎄
Pleased to announce that I will soon be joining

How hot was the early Eocene? 🔥
@LewisAlanJones
and I have developed a Bayesian model to estimate latitudinal temperature gradients from spatially incomplete geochemical and ecological proxy records.

My review of "Timefulness: How thinking like a geologist can help save the world" by Marcia Bjornerud is now available in the
@ThePalAss
newsletter! Thanks to
@Thomas_Clements
for the review invitation!
It's here! It's been great fun working with everyone in putting this together. However, it is really just the start. The package will see continuous updates and improvements going forward and forms part of the wider
@ThePalaeoverse
project! Check it out:
The reviewers' comments were generally very kind, positive, and encouraging. As a community, we generously give up our time to review... so this post is not to sound critical or unappreciative, just trying to increase awareness a little and highlight the weight of small comments.

I just received a notification that I've been nominated for the Union Fellowship award for my efforts in the student halls. The past 15 months have been pretty hard for wardens, so it is really nice to be nominated, thank you whoever is responsible! I have a big grin on my face😁
Interested in how spatial sampling impacts our estimates of global temperate? Come check out our poster on ‘Uneven spatial sampling in Phanerozoic palaeo climate curves’.

Out on fieldwork this week in León looking at some Devonian sections. The sun is shining and there are plenty of corals to be found. It’s great to be back in the field 😁
I have been a pastoral warden in student halls for the past four years. This year has been without doubt the hardest on both students and the wardening team. This morning I woke up to a Christmas tree and present outside my door as a thank you from the students 😭

Main updates:
- tax_range_space now has a coords argument to control output
- model argument in palaeorotate() now allows multiple models to be called.

Finished this really great book over the weekend. This is one of the few books I’ve come across that gives a refreshing economic perspective for why we need rewilding🌳🐝🦋🕊
Next week I'll be in Modena for the 13th International Symposium on Fossil Cnidaria & Porifera. I will be presenting on the evolution of the latitudinal biodiversity gradient in zooxanthellate corals
