Two women “dressed up as grannies" tried to get coronavirus vaccines in Florida. They were 34 and 44, so despite their get-ups, which included spectacles, they were ineligible. However, the ruse may have worked before.
TFW you arrive at your mother’s house to help her purge and are told to take this entire box of old vinyl. Apparently I had an original pressing of Strangeways Here We Come??? 🤯
Still one of my proudest moments: playing drums at my wedding in 2006, wearing heels. We played Teenage Fanclub’s “Your Love is the Place Where I Come From” and then a very ropey version of GBV’s “Game of Pricks”
So many teenagers last night getting to see a band they didn’t get to experience the first time round. This is when I feel good about being old. I saw them at 19 and I get to see them now. I will never take it for granted.

MY MAGNUM OPUS HAS DROPPED: my feature on
@slowdiveband
. And I was able to work in a mention of their “final” gigs in Toronto in 1994, which yes dear reader, I attended. Thank you to
@beachyheadband
for the interview&for enduring my endless follow up questions 🙏. See you soon!!
Welp this is 49. 🫠 🥴 Never imagined my life would look like this when I got here but I have my health, 2 amazing kids, a few friends who care about me both near/far, a 🏠 in a city that gets great gigs, & this vintage top I wore in my grade 10 photo which still fits me. 🙌
Final stop before leaving Manchester was mandatory. (Had hoped to live out my fantasy of riding a 🚲 like the Stop Me video but no time so this will have to do)

1. Your Love Is The Place Where I Come From
Jumping in now for 🥇 This is the last time I played drums in front of anyone. We played this at our 👰🏻♀️🤵🏼instead of having a 1st dance. (We’re now separated but John will always be one of the best humans I know)

@berenyi_miki
as my guest on
@star4beauty
for a 2 hr show devoted entirely to
@lushbandtweets
. Miki put together a playlist that spans the band’s entire catalogue, focusing on the less obvious album tracks, B-sides and covers.
Well…I woke up this morning and it’s now staring back at me…ffs….this is 50.
And it goes without saying that I definitely don’t feel it, but does a n y o n e when they make it here?

Day 1
Ride—Nowhere
When I saw the video for “Taste” late at night on TV at 17, I was introduced to a genre that would stay with me forever. If I had to pick a standout track though, “Dreams Burn Down” is the one that still guts me 32 years later. Those lyrics! 🥺
I have barely slept since Friday night so I officially have a Slowdive hangover. No bike ride, no deadlines; just going to lay about and watch TV in my gigantic 1993 Souvlaki T.
Goodbye 🇬🇧, that was absolutely utterly a week I will never forget. Saw so many lovely people who live in my phone, as well as
@slowdiveband
4x in a row. Feeling grateful for the friendships I have over here, & most of all for
@Galunacy
for going on this epic journey with me. 🫶
In the 90s, I’d find other girls who liked shoegaze by becoming pen pals. We’d send each other photos of the gigs we went to/bands we met. I was in awe of my NY-based friend Shelagh’s bedroom; it was covered in posters and she even had a Slowdive-devoted wall.
I got approached for a project from
a start up in NYC, so I applied, interviewed, did a call w/their recruiter& they selected me last night. Feeling a little overwhelmed/stressed but it’s nice to finally have something turn out positively in my career. It’s been years!
I made it to
@Monorail_Music
! Walked off with an original pressing of Modern Life is Rubbish which was in mint condition and cheaper than the repress 🤷🏻♀️
I cannot with the Slowdive fans moaning on the band’s FB page with entitled bitterness about a gig being on a weeknight or not close enough to them. JFC be happy they are still ACTIVE, making NEW music. If it matters to you so much, travel to the gig!! Do they not realize…

Day 2
My Bloody Valentine—Loveless
Not sure how I discovered MBV, but I do know I had this on cassette and remember listening to it on my Walkman while leaving school one day and thinking in the parking lot “WHAT IS THIS?” 🤯. My shoegaze education was continuing..
Depression brain was winning again today, convincing me all of all sorts of dark things. So I’ve put on my new
@fredperry
dress and am thankful I am seeing one of my most reliable, uplifting and positive friends tonight.
Flying over to see
@slowdiveband
is one the best decisions I’ve made in the last two years. Sad it’s over but still can’t quite believe I experienced this last night.
30 years ago (!!!) this month I spent 3 weeks in the NYC office of Sassy magazine working as a guest editor on their December issue and I found ways to include 3 bands I loved—Slowdive, Ride and Adorable—into the issue
Inspired by
@soniccathedral
, here’s my Leave Them All Behind CD single as well as the T-shirt I ordered (using a money order 👵🏻) from
@rideox4
. The song still sounds as incredible as it did 30 years ago. (No idea what the 1991 date refers to)
A kind man named Leslie walking his dog saw me outside Salford Lads and asked if I was a music fan. After I answered he offered to show me The Smiths room. Musos, I cried inside.

12. Bilinda Butcher
Joined MBV in ‘87 as guitarist/vocalist & her trademark singing was reportedly dreamy & sleepy bc she was half awake when recording. She always had perfect cat eye liner & I’m pretty sure she’s the reason I wore red jeans in the 90s.
Slowdive gig 1 with
@Galunacy
: felt like i was at church (I cried 3 times wtf), got to see my homie
@gshawisme
(we hung after show) and merch was acquired.
Having an extremely emotional day--my husband and I finally announced our separation--and am really thankful for all the new music friends I have made here recently. It might sound dumb, but it really helps. So thanks to all of you out there.
#30GreatWomenMusicians
16. Victoria Legrand
Lead vocalist, songwriter & keyboardist of Beach House. She has “contralto vocal range” which is the lowest for women. And it soars beautifully over the sonic soundscapes she co-writes. Danced next to her backstage in 2010 w/my 3yr old
Shoegaze was everywhere this year, surging like a 🌊 of crushed glass. Always an underdog, it proved to be the year’s most resilient &adaptable genre, bringing together 50-somethings & TikToking teens to kneel before vintage distortion pedals.
#30GreatWomenMusicians
Day 1 — Susanna Hoffs
As front woman/guitarist of The Bangles, she started as “a Strat girl” but moved to Rickenbackers & even did a ltd edition one w/them. She’s also 64–same age as Madonna—but looks 100x better. She also just wrote her 1st novel.
#Morrissey
’s Your Arsenal is 30 (!) today. Here’s the original ad for the Toronto date of that tour and photos I took that night. Had never experienced anything like it before.
#GazePop15
Lush—Split
A commercial failure, which I’ll never understand. From the eerie, twinkling opening notes of Light From A Dead Star to the beautiful ferocity (those🥁 fills!) of Blackout, it’s got such a breadth of tones/moods. “My love for you still 🔥”. Yes it does.
