The Kansas City area, including Lenexa, is expected to be impacted by winter weather beginning in the overnight hours tonight and continuing through much of Wednesday. Snow could lead to hazardous driving conditions across the metro on Wednesday. The safest place to be during a winter storm is off the roads. If at all possible, please stay home until conditions improve. If you must travel, remember that highways and bridges/overpasses usually present the greatest risk for a crash. If you are involved in a crash, pull to the side of the road if possible and call 911. Remain seatbelted in your car since you could be a risk of being struck by other cars if slick conditions are present. If we are dealing with a high volume of crashes, you may be instructed by a police dispatcher to exchange contact information with the other driver and file a report at a later time.

WARNING: New Mail Theft Crime Trend Thieves are targeting outdoor post office mailboxes to steal mail containing checks. They "wash" the checks, altering the payee and amount, and drain victims’ bank accounts! There have been several reports of this around Johnson County, including here in Lenexa. To protect yourself: ✅ Avoid using outdoor USPS mailboxes, especially after pickup hours. ✅ Use the mail slot inside the post office for safer drop-offs. ✅ Use a gel pen when writing checks which makes them more difficult to "wash". ✅ Don't use window envelopes which can show that a check is inside. ✅ Consider electronic payments like online banking or apps for added security.

On Friday, January 17, 2025, at approximately 11:10 p.m., our officers responded to the scene of a reported injury crash at the intersection of West 89th Terrace and Park Street. Upon arrival, officers located two vehicles involved in the collision, a Toyota RAV4 and a Ford Bronco, both of which had come to rest off the roadway in a nearby yard. The Ford Bronco was occupied by two adult females, neither of whom sustained injuries. The driver of the Bronco was taken into custody at the scene on suspicion of driving under the influence. The Toyota RAV4 was occupied by an adult female driver who was pronounced deceased at the scene by paramedics. A preliminary investigation conducted by our Traffic Safety Unit indicates that the Toyota RAV4 was traveling southbound on Park Street when the Ford Bronco, traveling eastbound on West 89th Terrace, failed to stop at a posted stop sign. The Bronco struck the RAV4, causing both vehicles to leave the roadway. This incident remains under investigation by our Traffic Safety Unit.

While our police officers often take the spotlight as the most visible part of our department, we want to recognize the incredible work happening behind the scenes. During the recent snowstorm, our Police Technical Support team went above and beyond to ensure the Justice Center remained safe and accessible. From clearing snow and salting walkways to maintaining parking lots for our staff and public visitors, their hard work didn't go unnoticed. A special shout-out goes to Technical Specialist Jaksetic (pictured here) and the rest of the crew for their dedication and teamwork. Thank you for keeping us moving, even in the toughest conditions!

It will be dangerously cold for the next several days. We advise keeping your pets indoors if at all feasible. If your pet must be outside, it should have access to a structurally sound, weatherproof shelter with good insulation such as clean straw. Water must also be accessible and not frozen. A heated water bowl can be found at most pet stores. If you believe a pet is being neglected, call Animal Control at 913-477-7301.

As of 9:30 PM, we continue to work many crashes and slide-offs, primarily on highways. Please avoid travel tonight and Sunday if at all possible.
⚠️We are starting to see our first crashes of the afternoon. As expected, they are occurring on highways. The light precipitation is starting to freeze on the roadways. Please strongly consider whether or not you need to be out this afternoon and evening. ⚠️

Roadways have become extremely hazardous and slick, with many cars unable to get traction and MOVE on the highways. Due to the high volume of crashes occurring in Lenexa, we are enacting our inclement weather crash reporting plan. You can file a crash report at a later time by coming to the Lenexa Justice Center (open 24/7) once the driving conditions have improved. We will still respond to crashes if there are injuries, cars are not drivable, or there is suspected impairment. We encourage everyone to stay at home if at all possible.

In the days leading up to Christmas, we conducted a coordinated operation in Lenexa to address retail theft. Multiple units within our department collaborated on this effort, including our K9 Unit, Bike Unit, Directed Patrol Unit, Uniform Patrol, and Dispatch. The operation utilized both uniformed and undercover officers, focusing on high-traffic shopping areas near W. 95th Street and Quivira. This proactive approach resulted in 33 arrests on various charges, including theft, felony theft, possession of stolen property, possession of narcotics (cocaine, fentanyl, and meth), possession of a firearm by a felon, and possession of a stolen vehicle. Among those arrested was a group suspected of involvement in an organized retail crime ring, with over $13,000 worth of stolen merchandise found in their vehicle. Additionally, several individuals with outstanding warrants were taken into custody. Our department remains committed to monitoring crime trends in our community and addressing them through regular patrols, investigative efforts, and targeted operations like this one.
