Key Features of the Legislation 1. Definition and Prohibition-The bill defines FGM explicitly and prohibits the practice in Alberta, ensuring that it is recognized and condemned legally. 2. Reporting Obligations-The legislation includes mandatory reporting requirements for healthcare professionals and other practitioners who encounter cases or are made aware of instances related to FGM, to protect girls. 3. Education and Awareness-The act emphasizes the importance of public awareness and community education regarding the dangers and illegality of FGM, aiming to dismantle cultural attitudes that may perpetuate the practice. 4. Health and Support Services-The legislation outlines necessary health services and support systems for individuals affected by FGM, addressing both physical and psychological impacts. This legislation protects vulnerable individuals and acknowledges the severe health risks and violation of human rights. It aligns with broader Canadian human rights frameworks and commitments to end gender-based violence. This marks a significant step forward in protecting young girls from harm and addressing this critical issue at the provincial level.
