It is absolutely ridiculous and unacceptable that an individual ordered released in the morning has to wait until after 11pm to be released from the #Toronto South Detention Centre. This is happening all too frequently.

Told my 7 year old daughter that I worked at Wonderland when I was younger and her eyes lit up like it was the most amazing thing ever and now I’m her hero. My current job means nothing to her.

Anyone watch this #ArmieHammer documentary? I was planning on it until I saw this article. If she was trying to pawn off a fake photo as real then I would question everything she said as that is a HUGE red flag. Therefore, Is it worth watching?

We tried setting a judicial pre-trial for a client in custody today but the Crown opposes saying it has only been a month since the case began. That Crown has slept in a nice warm home for the last month. Our presumed innocent client has slept in a jail cell

I can conduct gun, drugs, and murder trials but ask me to teach my 6 year old daughter how to add 1 number more than the other (ie 6+7 or 3+4) and within 5 minutes she is crying and I’m frustrated. Teachers have amazing patience.

Watching body worn camera footage of #Toronto Police officers in a case. One officer was about to tell the other officers his version of what happened when another officer taps the guy’s camera to remind him he is being recorded. So very shady. I look forward to cross-examination

It’s been a rough couple weeks after a client with no record was shockingly detained on June 1st. Finally, he was released today after a successful bail review. He can’t get back witnessing the birth of his first child but at least he can form an early bond.

The current conflict in #Israel has definitely opened up my eyes on colleagues here who pretend to care for human life. To be ok with the intentional murder of children is deplorable. I certainly won’t forget who they are. Whataboutism is never the answer to the murder of kids

A big problem with Zoom court is the fact that unknown participants, who are not yet required to turn on their camera, can take photos/video of the participants and post them on social media. Today I appeared for judgement on a firearm bail of a Canadian music artist. 1/2

A Crown Attorney today actually made the argument that an accused should be detained in a gun bail case because of #Coronovirus and that his family would be safer from the virus if he remained in custody. Unbelievable

Peel Regional Police officers Jamie Wallace and Christopher Galvao were found to have racially profiled a black men when stopping and searching him. They were, essentially, also found to have lied under oath. I expect no consequences for them.

When I want a great legal take on a given case I look to @SewrattanLaw @crimlacy @lawandchocolate and many others. So many better options of lawyers for the media to go to than one specific lawyer who will skip court to give them a bad legal take instead.

A first for me. Two contested virtual firearm bails in two jurisdictions (1,400km part) on the same day and both clients were released. The changes to our Justice system because of COVID make access to Justice much better.

I will not be accepting these “limited” Legal Aid certificates which will only serve to assist individuals who are not guilty of the crime they are charged with plead guilty to get it over with. Everyone involved should be concerned with this result.

Long but satisfying day in bail court today where my client, charged with serious offences, was rightfully released on bail in a weak Crown case. We need strong Justices of the Peace, like the one I was before today, who don’t pander to uninformed political/media created outcry.

Judge finds Mr. Denis intended to be contemptuous of the law. He is liable beyond a reasonable doubt for contempt of the doctor’s privileged right to testify. Also finds it was an action of intimidation to stop testifying about him.Intention was to obstruct. VERY SERIOUS findings

Multiple accused arrested for firearm possession. All on Legal Aid. Legal Aid won’t pay private Counsel for the bail hearing and Duty Counsel takes a position they can’t assist more than one due to some sort of conflict? Now what @LegalAidOntario ? @fordnation ? @ONAttorneyGen ?

Great Justices of the Peace do not think twice about conducting a contested bail hearing on a weekend. I encountered one of these JPs today. Some Crowns really need to think about the life consequences of others when making decisions. Luckily the JP accepted my submissions.

Peel Police officer Corona has multiple findings in trials of perjury and of racial profiling. This is quite concerning. Does ⁦ @PeelPolice ⁩ care or will they do anything? Likely not. This officer is likely still patrolling and breaking rules.

@AliciaS11723187 I did not watch all the testimony. A few examples of clear lies can absolutely ruin a witness’ credibility even if everything else said is true. Amber has done no favours to those who have been (or will be) abused by a domestic partner. Many who once believed her likely don’t now

One positive note from the constant isolation has been the ability to spend more time with one of my pets who may not survive the year due to an unknown illness. She’s been with me for 14 years and has been an amazing, gentle, and fun cat.

I really dislike co-accused cases sometimes. A great defence for everyone can be built up beautifully only to have it hurt by one counsel who jumps the gun and hurts it for everyone including their own client. So very frustrating.

Prosecutors ok with inviting a miscarriage of Justice need to rethink their career. In a case where they only have half the story, and upon learning the other half from the words of the “victim” simply retorts “well we do not have to call her” shows the problem with the system.

Appeared in Winnipeg criminal court for the first time. It was a pleasure. A cash deposit bail was set for my client’s release. Unlike in Ontario, the payment can be made by etransfer. So very efficient. Also very friendly staff. Ontario needs to accept etransfers.

Not that you, @MinJusticeEn seem to truly care about court delays but it’s important you know that a 4 or 5 day attempt murder prelim ended today with client discharged of all counts. Multiple Crowns reviewed case and decided to proceed. 3-4 week trial time saved.

Had a young Crown tell me he was entitled to a document today. Something about this Crown telling me he was “entitled” to it made me dig my heels in. He simply wanted me to fill out meaningless paperwork when everything needed was in the judicial pre-trial notes.

Crown says #PatKing is a leader and release would make a mockery of our justice system. Message sent would be to start a fire, spread fuel, prevent fire trucks from entering, but when caught tell the judge that despite disrespect for rule of law I'll listen to the conditions.

My favourite line: He made a mistake and owned up to it.Maybe at the police hearing where he knew he would get a slap on the wrist.But he tried to send a man away to jail for many years based on a lie he told under oath and didn’t own up to it at the time. Am I missing something?

There’s one criminal lawyer that some media outlets often go to for comment about cases. Not sure if they do it because they think he knows what he is talking about or because he’ll give them a good sound bite even though it is almost always NOT consistent with our laws/procedure

Unbelievable that @Puglaas doesn’t realize that eliminating Peremptory Challenges will affect Aboriginals negatively due to their overrepresentation in the system. Parks challenges alone don’t always work. There are better ways than total elimination.

Over the last 2 years I have entered several peacebonds on behalf of my clients and some in their absence without issue. Today, while working, a client dialled into court by phone to enter a PB and the judge wouldn’t do it unless he zoomed in.We’re going backwards @douglasdowney

Toronto police officers messaged each other during domestic violence testimony, judge finds - I am certain this happens a LOT more often but aren’t caught because they aren’t this obvious about it.

@TorontoPolice Don’t you think you should post their names and pictures in case there are other past inmates who have been assaulted by them? You don’t think there might be more victims out there or do you save that for non-officer type individuals charged with offenses?

@Pamreports @JoshMatlow This is incorrect. Once they have been paraded into the police station they can be given access to a phone to speak to a lawyer. In fact, an officer could provide this access even before being paraded if he/she so chooses.

Amazingly, the lawyer for Mr. Denis suggests a threat of civil action is not something that would fall under intimidation of a witness. A costly lawsuit is a strong threat in my opinion.

#PatKing mocked the pain and suffering of Ottawa citizens from the honking and uses it as a means to an end of whatever his ideology dictated. decided it was right to lie to police which raises concerns he'd interfere in the administration of justice.
