Today's 20kg wombling haul from
#Helvellyn
included 3 tents, rucksack covers, gloves, torches, water bottles, microspikes, dry bags & a 40' non collapsing tent pole! ☹️ Please
#leavenotrace
This includes taking orange peel & banana skins with you. Zac
Today was my 778th ascent of Helvellyn for the National Park & last day as an Assessor; to celebrate the cloud lifted as I climbed the headwall! Thanks very much to everyone for your kind words both written & in person & I look forward to meeting you on the fells in future. Jon
If you were above 600m today you probably enjoyed a day not dissimilar to this! Islands in the sky poking up through the cloud courtesy of todays temperature inversion. It was 9°C on the top of
#Helvellyn
today compared with the chilly 2°C in Glenridding! Wes
We hope the service has been useful in planning your winter adventures. Enjoy the summer, stay safe and we'll be back for the first snows of next winter 🏔 🙂 Jon, Wes & Zac 2/2
It's a year since Chris’s horrific accident whilst out on a call with Patterdale Mountain Rescue. An appropriate time to wish Chris all the best for his continued recovery & to highlight the fantastic dangerous work undertaken by the wonderful selfless Mountain Rescue volunteers
Amazing snow conditions on
#Helvellyn
today! Most paths are buried in shin to knee deep snow. Tomorrow could be bring very challenging conditions with the winds forecast. Wes
#summitsafely
For once, I timed it right! Walked along Striding Edge in cloud (pic looking towards Helvellyn's headwall) & cloud dissipated when reached it (second pic looking back along Striding Edge) Jon
WORDS FAIL ME ! Spray painted graffiti on the, to many of us, iconic rocks along Striding Edge. This is close to the Chimney or Bad Step. I think that our followers will share my outrage - but can anyone explain how this is remotely socially or environmentally acceptable? Jon
Helvellyn's rather desolate summit plateau around midday where the deepest snow drift was encountered....a whopping, and very exceptional, 12cm!! However, it's a start! Jon
Welcome back! A big hello to all of our followers on the first day of our 35th season and we’re off back up the hill! On behalf of Zac, John and myself we’re very excited about bringing you daily reports and photos from
#Helvellyn
throughout the winter! Wes
#summitsafely
In other news a crack team from the
@JohnMuirTrust
have braved the sunshine and done an amazing job cleaning the graffiti from
#Helvellyn
👏 Please let us know if you spot any more in our special wild places. Zac
We're back! Our winter condition reports from Helvellyn & the Lake District Fells resume tomorrow 🥳 Team ascent/media day today for a stunning wintery walk on the fells
@ITVborder
@ 6pm for those looking for a wee
#lakeswinter
fix
Welcome back to all of our followers! What an amazing day to start our 2023/24 season and on behalf of Zac, John and myself we look forward to bringing you daily tweets (is that what they’re still called?) throughout the winter. Wes
#summitsafely
The Fell Top Reports continue until Easter Monday but today was my last day this season so including today that's 645 times I've summitted Helvellyn for the National Park & what a day to finish being rewarded with the classic view of Striding Edge, Red Tarn & Ullswater. Jon
A glorious day when above the cloud. This is from Striding Edge looking at the summit of Catstye Cam poking through the cloud. There's the shadow of Striding Edge on the cloud and a fantastic Brocken Spectre - the halo circling my shadow. Jon
.....and that's a wrap for the
#felltopassessor
season 😃 Thanks to everyone who enjoyed our
#winterskills
courses, said hello on the hill & stayed safe this winter. We'll be back in time for the first snows of next winter
#blueskies
Jon, Wes & Zac
HAPPY CHRISTMAS from the summit of Helvellyn! Where better to enjoy your turkey and all the trimmings (or a hot soup and sandwich!) Wishing all our followers a very Happy Christmas from Jon, Zac and Wes
Tricky underfoot on
#stridingedge
with new snow, verglas & rime ice. Perfect conditions for microspikes & the extra security & safety they provide. Crampons would work but may feel a bit awkward while boots would be very scary & high risk
#summitsafely
#beadventuresmart
Zac
2-3 inches of fresh snow has fallen overnight and today on high ground. Lovely to look at but unconsolidated snow directly onto rock makes progress difficult and potentially dangerous. This ridge is not a place to slip!
#stridingedge
#summitsafely
We'll let Jon enjoy his well earned retirement after 16 years & 778 ascents but Wes & Zac will be back for the first snows of next winter Have a grand summer of adventures 😎
#summitsafely
Attempting
#stridingedge
at 3pm in trainers & tracksuit bottoms with no crampons, iceaxe, gloves, headtorch, rucksack or spare clothing in the current conditions is a high risk strategy. Thankfully the team made a good decision and retreated with a story to tell
#summitsafely
Zac
Strong SW winds whipping the snow across the
#Helvellyn
plateau. Not a place to be without gloves, goggles, crampons, iceaxe, map or compass - a steep learning curve for some walkers today!
#summitsafely
#beadventuresmart
Zac
Helvellyn's summit was devoid of people but unfortunately showed signs of previous visits. Do the *** people who leave it looking like this really want to walk up themselves to find it full of litter? Plus small mammals can starve when stuck in empty beer bottles. Distraught Jon
These pics of walkers enjoying their lunches out in the open avoiding the summit shelter sum up the magical (& to be honest rare) conditions on Helvellyn's summit around midday. Virtually no wind & underfoot conditions here far easier than pavements in the villages! Jon
Thoughts with
@patterdaleMRT
and the whole Mountain Rescue community after the devastating events on Friday nights rescue on Red Screes. Sending our best wishes to everyone involved. Zac, Wes & Jon
Todays rubbish haul from
#Helvellyn
included a camping stove & pans, used nappy, wine bottle, beer can, full size bath towel from the summit shelter & a tent dragged from the depths of the tarn :( PLEASE TAKE NOTHING BUT PHOTOGRAPHS & LEAVE NOTHING BUT FOOTPRINTS
#HelvellynWomble
The summit shelter on my 750th successful ascent of Helvellyn for the National Park. Blue skies & deep, hard snow would have been preferable but it's always good to be here! I'm hanging up my working boots at the end of this season if anyone else wants to beat 750 ascents! Jon
Well equipped climbers enjoying today's conditions along Swirral Edge. Catstye Cam behind, Red Tarn & Striding Edge's shadow in the snow. Taken from near the top of the ridge. Jon
Looking out over
#redtarn
and
#stridingedge
from the summit of
#Helvellyn
today. -4°C on the tops and around -10°C windchill with more snow in the forecast tomorrow! Wes
Magical summit views from
#Helvellyn
on another spectacular winters day. Crampons / microspikes & an ice axe essential for anyone venturing above the snowline as even the easiest paths are becoming icy
#summitsafely
#beadventuresmart
Zac
The
#Helvellyn
edges are now in full winter condition with soft snow, rime ice, frozen turf & pockets of soft wind slab. Crampons & ice axe are essential for anyone attempting Striding & Swirral Edges
#summitsafely
Zac
Helvellyn's deserted summit trig point with the steep east face just visible to the right. Very few fresh footprints in the snow and, indeed, I met nobody from leaving Glenridding to returning there! Jon
Emerging out of the white room! Assisting a team in jeans with no crampons, ice axes or navigation equipment safely off the
#Helvellyn
edges ☹ Very poor visibility, deep snow & 70mph gusts on the summit
#summitsafely
Zac
Merry Christmas from a festive Trig point on Helvellyn! From my many Xmas Day ascents of Helvellyn this was a) the quietest (only met 3 people on the fell) & the only one with absolutely no snow anywhere on the walk to put my boot in! Jon
Of the Christmas Days when I've summitted Helvellyn, today was the quietest. Had the atmospheric, wet edges totally to myself until I met a Herdy wrapped in tinsel sheltering from the 35mph cross winds. Jon
Enjoying a full winter expedition on
#Blencathra
All the winter toys were used today - winter boots, crampons, ice axe, microspikes, trekking poles, goggles. Very variable conditions underfoot as a fresh SW wind is transporting the fresh snow & graphal around the mountains. Zac
Never really understood why people choose to camp on the top of
#helvellyn
. It’s almost always extremely windy and rocky. It’s also an imposition on other hill goers especially when you pitch in the summit shelter… and don’t take your gear away with you! Wes
#leavenotrace
A totally self-indulgent pic of myself by Helvellyn's rime covered Trig Point with today's magnificent view behind! Today was my (Jon's) 600th successful ascent of Helvellyn whilst working as an assessor for the National Park. Goggles were very helpful against the stinging hail.
A spectacular but bitterly cold climb for the final shift of this seasons
#felltopassessor
service. Even Snowdonia was visible from the summit panorama. However full winter clothing & equipment was essential to safely enjoy the experience
#summitsafely
Zac
Helvellyn's summit view. The air temp in the shade at midday was minus 6 degrees but in the winter sun & almost non existent wind it felt around zero! Warmer than the valleys! Jon
A sublime day to be in the hills… if you could get to them! A major incident was declared in Cumbria last night with an estimated 200 cars stranded in the snow. A timely remember to pack your vehicle as well as your rucksack with warm clothes and provisions! Wes
Happy New Year folks! 🥳 A fine day to see in 2024 as seen from
#DollywaggonPike
earlier today. Some new snow overnight and feeling quite wintery on the higher tops. All the best for the year ahead from Wes, Zac and Jon
#Happy2024
#summitsafely
Very warm & sunny on
#Helvellyn
today with just a few small patches of snow hanging on in there. Happy to report that despite a very busy mountain there was very little litter :)
#summitsafely
Zac
A few people spotted today wearing jeans or tracksuit bottoms and trainers and carrying nothing additional. When Cotton or Denim gets wet and combined with -6°C windchill, at best it’s going to be very uncomfortable. At worst it’s a recipe for hypothermia. Wes
#beadventuresmart
A spectacular & busy day on everyone's favourite mountain. Scarily there was again a significant number of ill-equipped walkers. We saw it all today; no gloves, ice axes, crampons, rucksacks, maps, compasses or spare clothing & trainers on their feet
#summitsafely
Zac
There were folk intending to summit Helvellyn today with no map nor compass. I know many experienced walkers follow/share these tweets. Please talk to people on the way up about what conditions are like. This was the "view" from the exit cairn towards Swirral Edge...
Ascending a very wintery
#swirraledge
with todays team. Micro-spikes are very useful in the current conditions. Check out today’s report for more details. Wes
Pic taken in a similar spot to yesterday's...but what a different view! Looking down Swirral Edge at Catstye Cam & Red Tarn with Striding Edge's shadow on the fellside. Jon
For those who have only ascended Scafell Pike on a summer weekend with hundreds of others, this is what the summit looks like on a low cloud, grey day mid-week in February when I had the summit totally to myself. Jon
The first signs of winter. Rime Ice beginning to form on cold windward surfaces today and with cold temperatures forecast in the coming week it’s worth planning your winter excursions carefully! Keep an eye on our reports for details. Wes
#beadventuresmart
Around -5°C on the top of Helvellyn today and with winds gusting 30-40 mph, the feels like temperature was around -15°C. Please make sure you are equipped and experienced enough to deal with conditions like this if you are heading in to the hills
#summitsafely
-7°C with -18 degrees of windchill on the
#Helvellyn
plateau. A magical but challenging enviroment and deadly without the correct clothing, equipment & experience
#summitsafely
#beadventuresmart
Zac
Trying… unsuccessfully to give a conditions synopsis from the top of
#swirraledge
… but it speaks for itself. A challenging day in the higher fells.
#summitsafely
Wes
Cornices or snow overhangs form on the downwind side of ridges and can be a big hazard for winter walkers. They are most unstable when forming or thawing and should be given a wide berth. Zoom in to see the footsteps of somebody who had a very lucky escape today!
#summitsafely
For those in the South Lakes under the cloud thinking "What's the point of climbing high today".....this was the point!! A glorious cloud inversion, spectacular views (this is looking at Great Gable & the Scafells), happy walkers & warmer summit temperature than the valley. Jon
The view from near the top of Browncove Crags today with many of the higher fells poking through. Tap for sound if you’d like to know which ones. A very special morning. Wes
A challenging day with heavy snow during the afternoon and lying down to roughly 600m. Well done to today’s
#winterskills
team captured here descending from a windy summit plateau… although not as windy as forecast! Wes
#summitsafely
There were both boot prints & paw prints in this bank of snow at the top of Helvellyn's east face which should be avoided since there are small, & extremely weak, cornices at the top of it. Even the weight of a dog could cause it to fail. Jon
With warm and windproof clothing together with preferably goggles or glasses to protect eyes from stinging windblown spindrift, Helvellyn's summit was a superb place to be today! Jon
Unusually the
#Helvellyn
plateau is currently blanketed under calf to thigh deep snow making very slow going. Paths hidden above 600m & whiteout conditions at times gave very challenging navigation. A day to be conservative with your plans
#summitsafely
#beadventuresmart
Zac
A blue sky day with stunning views in all directions. This is looking towards the north at Lower Man in the foreground, Skiddaw in the background with the Solway Firth & Scottish hills clearly visible (altho' photo doesn't do it justice!) Jon
From your kind comments, it's clear that many people are following us to get their "Lakeland fix" whilst unable to visit. If it makes you feel any better...you didn't miss much today! This is the desolate view from the windblown summit of Great Rigg (766m) looking N. Jon
Cornices or snow overhangs above the east face of
#Helvellyn
- a significant hazard in winter. Tricky to spot where solid ground ends from above so please give them a wide berth & advise others with less experience to do likewise
#summitsafely
Zac
Whatever happened to "take only photographs & leave only footprints". Rubbish under stones removed from the other side of the seating area of Helvellyn's summit shelter. I'll take a bag to remove it tomorrow but please also help if you are there. Thanks Jon
2 consecutive blue sky days! Striding Edge, Birkhouse Moor with the Pennines in background incl Cross Fell from an undervisited viewpoint near Lad Crag. Note the unusual circular crack in the corniced edge - not something to stand on! Jon
A busy weekend on
#Helvellyn
with plenty of folk out enjoying the good weather & tricky conditions underfoot. Unfortunately we also saw a lot of litter & we were even hit by an empty drinks can tossed over the east face ☹ Please take it with you!
#summitsafely
Zac
The 6th consecutive day of either cloud above the summit or no cloud at all - we could get used to this! This view from Helvellyn's summit is looking at Striding Edge, a partially frozen & snow covered Red Tarn and cloud over Ullswater. Jon
Police were questioning and possibly fining people in Swirls carpark today as they came back down off the hill returning to cars registered outside of Cumbria.
#staylocal
Tad wet & windy on the fells today with the arrival of
#StormGerrit
One of the highest wind speeds the fell top assessors have recorded - 98mph! Glad I ate my bodyweight in mince pies this Christmas!
#summitsafely
Zac
Slumping cornices on Helvellyn's headwall & (if you enlarge the pic) 2 dogs just below the Trig point which had been stuck there for 2 days. Took 1.5hrs to rescue them owing to unstable snow and 1 being scared. They are now safely home - thanks to all concerned especially Kevin.
Fresh snowfall overnight down to around 400m with slowly thawing frozen ground and ice still present down to valley level. Great views today when the cloud lifted. Wes
#summitsafely
This image gives a good idea of the snow depth in places today. Many paths and some water features are buried under deep snow and with white out conditions in the higher fells your navigation skills need to be solid and well versed. Wes
#summitsafely
A very windy day with gusts in excess of 60mph over high ground. The general haze in the photo is airborne snow and ice pellets making walking into the wind particularly arduous. Goggles recommended for comfort and navigating safely!
#summitsafely
Striding Edge today was very atmospheric as it alternated from being in cloud to in sunshine with promises of Brockenspectres (that never fully materialised!) Jon
The year comes around so quickly! Today was my first day back up the hill and marks the start of our daily fell top condition reports which run through until Easter. If you’re planning a trip into the hills or just interested don’t forget to check them out! Wes
With the cloud above the summit, finally a chance to show you the extent of the recent snowfall with this classic view of Striding Edge, Red Tarn, Birkhouse Moor & Ullswater as seen from Striding's exit. Jon
A beautiful winters day! Fresh snow down to 500m, sunshine and moderate winds. With a northerly Arctic air flow dominating in the coming days, we can expect more snow and ice developing in the fells! Wes
#summitsafely
Swirral Edge & Catstye Cam from near the top of Swirral Edge. Between 750m & 850m the new snow is lying on bare ground/rocks. Above 850m, & especially over 900m, there can be old rime ice/snow underneath making underfoot conditions more slippery. Jon
