For the record : In his insightful book 'The Theory of Moral Sentiments' Adam Smith brilliantly explains that what he calls the 'Social Passions', such as generosity, humanity, kindness, compassion, and esteem which are certainly good in themselves, are often misused in the 'immediate vs remote' effects syndrome. This is when we, by fault of courage or proper reasoning, give into trending expectations where what appears to be of good virtue is commended by certain influential groups of society. Many of us do have a proclivity for caving in to 'immediate' sympathy for what may be tagged by liberals as morally right, where we be visibly generous, kind, open-minded, etc... but the 'remote' effect, which only really manifests itself later on, is often damning to the whole of society. In short, what frivolous gains are acquired early on by being meek and ostentatiously virtus are offset by more serious ills later which are detrimental to all of us.
