Unlike what unconditional pessimists tell us, Humanity has never been as peaceful, healthy, tolerant, wealthy and educated as it is today.
But unlike what unconditional optimists tell us, the cost of screwing it up has never been as cheap and "democratized" as it is today.

No reasonable president would gather the CEOs of pharmaceutical companies and tell them "I hope you'll educate us as to what you think is most needed to protect society".
They would first ask scientists who understand the risk-benefit balance and deal with CEOs for who they are.
Artificial Intelligence is one of the most powerful tools of our time, but to seize its opportunities, we must first mitigate its risks.

Sir, I've read your book, and I'm sure you know how to apply Bayes theorem.

I grew up in an "inshallah" culture and had to guess at an early age what shade of grey was my father's inshallah in each case, which probably gave me a head-start to understand epistemic probabilities and become a Bayesian, the Laplace hardliner branch.

My resolution for 2021 is to treat "both sides" relativism as more dangerous than "the other side" for issues where 50-50 relativism is artificially amplified. It fuels a real 50-50 polarisation in the real world.

Basic error in rational thinking is forgetting confounders*. Happens even with Nobel prizes and Turing awards.
* One in many confounders: in authoritarian regimes like my home country, there is no visible polarization because posting on Facebook against the King leads to jail.
Indeed
@RichardDawkins
, propaganda outlets, not social media, are the source of harmful disinformation.
For the US & UK, the common cause is Rupert Murdoch's media empire.
Many other countries use social media just as much but have not reached similar levels of polarization.
In 2019 alone, Facebook removed 6 billion suspicious profiles. Twice the total number of legitimate profiles on FB in 15 years of existence.
If you are harassed by a gang of freshly minted profiles and think they are paid trolls, you are not paranoid, you are just rational.
For the past years, like several other targets, I received spywares, death and torture threats, threats of dissolving my body in acid… These threats usually prepare the target for jail on fabricated charges.

Those who doubt that AI could control humans never witnessed how smart scientists and entrepreneurs are controlled by a dumb sequential algorithm called law and a dumber optimiser called PR department, trying to minimise reputational damage but actually maximising it.
I keep repeating this but talking about justice in computing is not "activism", it's just an overdue back to the original intent:
