This is my daughter, posing for a selfie with defamatory and intimidating posters against me in front of our home in Tbilisi. This is the defiance they get in return. They thought they could scare us. Well, I don't think so!

Thosands stayed for an overnight proteat against the Russian law, to once again show our defiance.
Instead of hearing our voices, the govt used brutal force to disperse the peaceful protesters and vote for the third committee hearing in 1 (one!) minute without the presence of
Update from
#TbilisiProtests
and I will try to keep this more regular as time allows:
- yesterday, our numbers surpassed any day before since we began to counteract the Russia-inspired "transparency of foreign influence law," known in Georgia as the "Russian law"
They've put up these posters on the windows of our office in Tbilisi, saying we are "traitors," "slaves of foreign money" and the like. We are not afraid, these posters will go, they will go, and we will prevail.
#NotoRussianLaw
Students chanting "a slave!" as the names of those who voted for the russian law with the third hearing is being read out at the rally.
#NoToRussianLaw
I spoke to the largest public gathering ever in my life on May 11th and wanted to share this, since I think it encapsulates well my point of view and what it is that I am fighting for these days.
#NotoRussianLaw
- our efforts are constitutional and non-violent
- the government is responsible for breaking its promise, violating the Constitution, and betraying the democratic consensus of Georgians to seek EU membership.
- contrary to what they anticipated, the time favors the public and their domestic public support plunges
- we need our partners to impose costs on the government for their actions. So far words have been good and helpful. Action is needed
- while the government puts on a brave face, they face mounting odds:
- the rally they organized (and spent millions) started to disperse the moment it began, showing a demoralized crowd unwilling to be there at all
- our rallies are strong, growing &standing from dusk to down
- this shows that the opposition is national and genuine. That there is strong motivation to oppose it and there is the capability to organize independently
- it was a stark difference from the governmental rally, which we surpassed without a centralized effort &organized bussing
They've lost the battle of arguments. They've lost the battle for public opinion. They've lost the battle for supporters in the streets. What's left? Using a mob to scare us away? Won't work. What then? Then is a collapse with their names written in the annals of shame forever.

- I say this also because it will show that our friends in democracies are ready to walk the walk. It will have a strong moral and political effect
- Our partners must not back down from their existing plans to support independent voices. Rather now is the time to level up
- the protest is growing. Yesterday, we witnessed unprecedented self-mobilization and crowdfunding from various cities: Batumi, Kutaisi, Telavi and other cities to get together and arrive in Tbilisi for protests
The Georgian government is marking "Family Sanctity Day" today, while my family is being harassed daily with threatening phone calls and posters in front of our office and apartment. In the last few days, a strange band of men started to appear in front of the entrance to our apt
Ucha Abashidze, one of the most popular military bloggers, also known for his pro-Ukrainian positions was arrested just now. The police searched his apt and questioned him for hours without admitting his lawyers, therefore blatantly violating his rights.

GD claims victory in every municipality except one. This is the state of democracy for Georgia in 2021. Reminds me of Russia or China rather than a democracy. Source:

I was a recent graduate 18 yrs ago at an important crossroad of either remaining in Georgia or pursuing career elsewhere. The Rose Revolution made me stay and do what I do now. Do I have doubts? You bet. Do I regret it? Never. Still believe this country deserves & can do better.
Even though the Parliament's Russian Dream party adopted Russian law in the third hearing, there is a veto ahead - and this image of people pushing police back is truly a masterpiece: light vs dark, democracy vs autocracy, the FREE people of Georgia against Russian law.
On this day 1989, Soviet Army butchered our peaceful protesters. They did it most brutally: with their shovels and gas. April 9 was my formative event. I will work & fight against what this antihuman system represents, now in the face of a Modern Russia. Photo - National Archives
In this video, a leading GD MP, Nino Tsilosani accuses me of hackling at her during the interview (on the day she was voting for overcoming the Presidential veto on the Russian Law). I fully share the sentiments of those neighbors and drivers who called her a "traitor" and a
In 2001-2003 The Government of Eduard Shevardnadze wanted to impose financial restrictions on NGOs, under the guise of "fighting destabilization and terrorism". In 2011, the United National Movement developed a draft to ban the work of NGOs working on political party development.
This is what I had to say yesterday. It's all in GE but for my Georgian speaking friends, who could not hear due to a historically large crowd yesterday. Largest ever, perhaps.

It was a big day for Georgian football and a good performance as Georgia played its first-ever match at the European Championship. The gods of Football were looking after the other side today, but better days are yet to come. Here, the neighborhood is immersed in the game,
Threatening phone calls from foreign numbers are being made to many of us with a role in the opposition to the "Russian Law" in Georgia. They tried to reach me, called my wife (got back a strong response!) and tried to reach my elder daughter! We are not afraid!

What an ominous day this 25th of February. In 1921 the Russian Red Army entered Tbilisi to put a violent end to the young and vibrant Georgian democracy. Today, they are working to encircle and subdue Kyiv. I pray they fail, I hope they do.
These are the numbers of road fatalities for the last five years in Georgia. Instead of feeding the public all sorts of conspiracy theories about some "global war party" and "LGBT annexation" the government must try and solve real issues of life and death in this country.
Protest in Tbilisi grows as people take to the streets to express their anger about the visit of Russian parliamentarians for the conference as one of them was even allowed to take the seat of the Chair of the Parliament to lead the meeting.
On this day in 2008, Russia attacked Georgia within its internationally recognized borders. It continues to occupy Abkhazia and South Ossetia, has expelled the Georgian population and continues to uphold the modern day regimes based on the ethnic 'cleansing of Georgians.

. Good exchange on situation in Georgia. Thanks, UK for all your support to the Georgian citizens and to our democracy.
Why should Georgia not offer its peacekeeping/monitoring role to Azerbaijan & Armenia shall such an option be ever discussed? We have the neutrality (way stronger than Russians)+int. mil. experience. Unrealistic? May be, now, but time to think of doing smth. more in the region.
Very excited to be launching the Democracy School in Tbilisi tomorrow. Thanks to the Dutch Embassy for its support, without which it wouldn't have been possible at all. Confident that the positive impact of the School will be felt in Tbilisi soon!

COVID19 will hurt many industries but also teach us a lot. Many are learning fast. Even schools (in Tbs) have switched to distance pretty much effortlessly. Never thought I could do wine tasting online. When we reach the other shore, we'll see a different business culture emerge.
Unbelievable that Georgia allowed this Putin's propagandist to cross into the country and then, in violation of the lock down, go feasting in a restaurant to... celebrate his birthday! Outraging!

Watching Saakashvili's court hearing with bewilderment. He was not given the opportunity to participate in his own trial via an online link. The prosecution argues they don't have the equipment to link him (!) + asks the court for one more month, to "study" his health conditions.

The founding mothers of 🇬🇪. Exactly 101 years ago, on 14-16 February 1919, Georgians have voted for their Constituent Assembly - the first freely elected parliament under universal suffrage. These 5 social-democrat trailblazer women were among the first parliamentarians.

PM Gakharia resigns citing his opposition to the potential escalation if UNM leader was to be detained by the police. He cites "lack of consensus" in GD, indicating deep divisions within & the razor thin line the country is walking. Seems we've escaped becoming Russia, again.
Bill to ensure Georgia's next elections take place under the proportional system seems to be stalled at its first hearing as GD MPs and others, insult & attack each other. To many, its an ill-disguised attempt to backtrack on reform in the face of declining popular support.

Tampering with the Constitutional Court of Georgia is a very clear red line which the GD party shouldn't cross, whatever pressure there may be from the church. Human rights are far more important than electoral numbers. Hope they see what a dangerous path they are treading.
