If you ghosted your therapist & want to return, pls reach out to them ~ we understand, this happens & it’s part of the process sometimes!
I love hearing from clients when they’re ready to continue.
What matters most is getting your needs met 💙

My mom died this morning. She was an amazing woman who dedicated her life to the education and care of children.
There is so much I could say:
I’ll miss her silliness, generosity, thoughtfulness, and for always correcting my grammar.
💔💔💔
As a white woman, I ask my clients who are not white, "How is it for you to have a white women therapist?"
You may or may not be surprised at how many times people tell me that no white therapist has ever asked them this question (pretty much every time)

Are you RESTING??
Or are you
thinking of all of the things you, "should" be doing and shaming yourself for taking a break due to your internalized capitalist beliefs about being productive?
Amazing example of teaching a child to set boundaries, consent, use words, respecting them and encouraging that their voice matters!! 😍😍🥹🥹😭😭 be prepared to cry
As a therapist, this is a giant loaf of crap - get some of your own therapy, more training, and/or supervision, please and please stay off of social media in the meantime if you’re coming here to say harmful shit like this
Therapists: Do you recommend a book so often you feel like there should be some kinda payment to you? 😆📚 What are your book recs to clients? And clients: what recs have you liked? Let’s get a therapy 📕🧵 going!

For the record, because someone asked me today:
Yes I still only offer virtual therapy sessions (to Black people) due to COVID
I do not plan to have in-person sessions anytime soon
Oh Telehealth isn’t effective, you say?
Tell that to my many clients I’ve seen virtually for 5+ years, most would disagree!
If you’re a telehealth provider or recipient & you agree, RT/like this so we can prove a point (& there’s research…)

Remember the story of the dr who delivered a baby while she was in labor & then herself gave birth shortly after? Amazing!
Therapists do this regularly- we struggle w/ pain, issues, stressors, MH, bad days, & trauma & then help our clients - heroic shit

Reminder to therapists:
You don't have to write a book, be a TikTok/YouTube star, be on a podcast, or do anything like this to be a solid clinician, providing great treatment, day after day.
You are a star to your clients and that matters!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Therapists:
Let's have another round of 📣📣
Overused and/or incorrectly words & phrases in the realm of mental health right now!
I'll start:
-Toxic
-Gaslighting
-Narcissistic
-Imposter Syndrome
....what else?
#TherapistTwitter
If you ever wonder if your therapist thinks about you between sessions, really cares about you, misses you after you're no longer meeting, and/or thinks about you long after you've worked with them...
YES, we do 🥹💚
Conversion “therapy” is NOT therapy, it is harmful and unethical.
I hate the concept being associated with therapy.
Therapists- this isn’t up for debate.
If you’re attempting to manipulate someone’s sexual orientation, get a new profession immediately.
Therapists, please take some time to read this to learn more about what *not* to say
And ask those parts of you that feel defensive, judgmental, etc to step back while you listen and learn
Therapist math is needing to cancel sessions to take care of ourselves then later feeling the urge to support our clients so we reschedule too many too soon and then neglect ourselves
I may have overdone it with pleasure/dopamine seeking behaviors today. Time to go for a walk & sit under a tree to turn off my amygdala so I can reset my brain & deal with the trauma stored as weight in my body. Can anyone recommend a coach for this? I can pay up to $1K/hr
Compliments for therapists:
1. Showing up
2. Saying, “I thought about what we talked about …”
3. “That’s a great question!”
4. “I was in ___(diff situation)__ & I heard your voice saying…”
5. <laughing at our jokes>
6. “Thank you”
What else?

"How is this working for each of you?"
"What's it like when ________?"
"Where are you with this relationship?"
"Can you tell him what needs you have that are/aren't getting met?"
"Oh, that's interesting--so when you---he ---- and then you ----"
“Laziness,” is a judgmental social construct.
Let’s consider some reasons people may not be engaging in the ways others deem important:
*Unmotivated
*Depressed
*Have different priorities
*Issues w/ exec functioning
*Medical problems
*Grieving
*Disabled
*Disinterested
My mom’s name was Dorothy - sometimes family members called her Dot.
Yesterday when I was driving home after the funeral I saw this - I think she was saying hello to me 🥹🥹🥰🥰
Dear therapists,
The issue with talking about clients on social media or making jokes about pretend clients on social media, is the first is unethical and the second is people don’t know the difference.

Dialectic of the Day: Therapist Edition
Me as a therapist: I love people. I’m so curious about them. I’m non-judgmental, empathetic, and understanding. Humans are amazing with their abilities to heal & recover!
Me, NOT in a therapist role: omg ppl can be so annoying
Good morning to therapists who are busy managing your own lives, emotions, relationships, finances, careers, etc while supporting your clients ~ you are a hero! 💫
✨ Reminder ✨
If you’re thinking of starting therapy, now is a great time to find a therapist with availability ~ that will change over the next month! 👀
⭐ Therapist Recognition & Appreciation ⭐
For the therapists who are doing the clinical work, day after day, putting their own stuff to the side while helping others, struggling and yet taking the time & energy to be present for clients
💚 THANK YOU---YOU ARE APPRECIATED 💚
Therapists dealing with global events, systemic issues, their own health/mental health, and taking care of others, while also caring for their clients be like:
I have an idea, I think (already being done?)
Self-employed therapists with private practices give X amount of hours to a college counseling program to provide therapy to their students
in exchange for the school providing the therapist with health insurance

Dilemmas of a Therapist, Part 3
I am very honest and do not like to lie and yet I do not want to tell strangers I am a therapist because then they want to treat me like THEIR therapist when I am indeed not their therapist
#TherapistTwitter
The truth about therapy is there are no life hacks or shortcuts.
There are def skills & strategies that help w/ symptoms. I have taught DBT skills for many years & believe in them.
Therapy is also learning to sit with emotions & experiences w/out changing them 🤍
Thoughts?
BTW if you think therapy is, "just talking/listening"
that tells me you either haven't been a (competent) therapist
and/or
you haven't been in (competently provided) therapy
Therapists don't spend all of this time, money, energy, etc. to just talk, babes
You know how you're cleaning a spill on the floor and then you start realizing how the rest of the floor is kinda dirty and you notice other spots and it becomes a bigger job? Yeah, that's like therapy sometimes
Please stop with your harmful, absolute & ignorant takes on what therapy shouldn’t/should be and/or your opinions on telehealth. If you’re not good at something, just say that. It’s ok. We all have our strengths & preferences.
Therapists aren’t doing this job for the money or because, “we’re paid to care!”
I don’t know a single therapist who chose this field to make money.
We need fair compensation for what we do because we give so much!

s/o to my mental health colleagues who are working so hard, dealing with daily trauma on a global level, keeping their own shit together, while simultaneously supporting others! 💚💚
❣️You are true HEROES❣️
My wife and daughter are watching Greys anatomy. And they get mad at me every time I make a comment about how what is happening on the show is unethical, or illegal,
or impossible.
But EVERY time I walk by, they are doing something unethical, or illegal, or impossible. 🤷🏽♂️
In couples therapy, the couples will often assume we are there as therapists to tell them who is right and who is wrong, likely a parallel process to their experiences IRL. Here are ways to address that, a 🧵
Mental health professionals:
Please, I beg you, to add some nuance to your posts. It’s not helpful to make all or nothing statements.
How about?:
~Could be
~Perhaps
~Sometimes
Etc.
Therapists are imperfect humans who are doing their best to help & support others while trying to keep their own lives together ~ no one is perfect and we all need love & support 🧡
I'm giving serious consideration to EMDR training. I don't NEED another training to be competent, I am already secure in my abilities and competency. However, I have long been interested in EMDR and think it would be a great addition to my skill set. Thoughts?

Vocabulary for therapists, Part 2:

*What happens for you when…?
*Tell me more about that
*I’m noticing a theme with …

Dear Therapist,
I know it’s tempting to compare yourself to colleagues: to their accomplishments, their website, their social media, their skills, their side gigs etc, etc.
Please know you are enough and you don’t need to be doing all the things!

Oh, you’re a therapist who works with trauma and you aren’t adequately prepared to work with someone with BPD without stigmatizing them & managing your countertransference?

Advice for new therapists 🧵
1) Get the most out of your clinical supervision
2) Engage in your own therapy if/when possible, esp early on
3) When you're with the client, it's about the client- keep it that way. A little self-disclosure goes a long way.
4) When you notice (cont)
Dialectic of the Day: Therapist Edition
Being a therapist is an honor, a privilege, and often a calling,
AND
It can be draining, lead to burnout, and be unsustainable for some.
💚💚💚
A reminder to newer therapists/those of you in therapy school:
It's not as much about what/how much you know or what models you use
VS.
SHOWING UP for the client, CONSISTENCY, being AUTHENTIC, and demonstrating CARE & COMPASSSION
BE YOU!
💙💙💙

As a therapist, I'm not, "fixing" my clients -because I don't see them as broken or a problem to fix.
I'm here for support, encouragement, validation, teaching, exploring options, discussing decision-making, and guiding them through what they need & want.
💚💚💚
Therapy is political
If I’m not fighting for systemic change on behalf of marginalized & vulnerable people, then I’m not fully engaging in my work as a clinician.
• Advocacy for human rights
• Gun control
• Decolonization
… and much more
#MentalHealthAwareness
One challenge of being a therapist: the nuance of being our true selves w/ making adjustments based on client needs.
For example, some clients need more directness, & others need more gentleness. It takes time & experience to learn if/how/when to do this.
#TherapistTwitter
Part of being a competent therapist is acknowledging your scope of practice, limitations, and that you’re not the best therapist for everyone!
💚
#TherapistTwitter
One really tough aspect of being a therapist is the amount of holding space for processing information & emotions - therapists, how do you practice doing this AND let it go at the end of the session/day? 🩵

🚩 Red Flags 🚩 for mental health providers on SM:
🚩 Misleading/misrepresenting their education, training, and/or credentials
🚩 Using absolute statements that are intentionally inflammatory
🚩 Lack of awareness of a cultural perspective
🚩 Lack of empathy and/or bullying
@realdocv
That’s so disheartening to hear and I’m sure he’s grateful you stepped in. Even if was on drugs, he didn’t deserve judgment, esp from first responders. 😔
Sending love & energy to the therapists out there who are holding space for clients while managing their own lives filled with stress.
We need & appreciate you!! 🩵🩵
Reminders:
Private practice isn't necessarily the pinnacle of our work
Clinicians in private practice don't always have more experience/expertise/skills
