At 5 weeks old Phoebe’s was diagnosed with Biliary Atresia and needed a new liver. My daughter couldn’t donate - she had to look after her - but I could. A deceased donor liver failed – but my liver worked. Phoebe is now four and thriving. #livingdonorweek

A Valentines story ❤️ My husband had PKD. I volunteered to be a living donor, but wasn’t a match. Fortunately we found a match on the shared scheme; it was all systems go! We’ve been together 35 years. Thanks to organ donation we have a even more! #livingdonorweek

My journey to living kidney donation was not straightforward, from being my mums donor but running out of time, to saving a stranger instead 🫘 #livingdonorweek

I entered the UK Kidney Sharing Scheme to help my fiancé, Adam: my kidney would go to another and their donor’s kidney would go to him. I donated in 2024. Recovery was tough but now I feel great! It’s a great process; I wish more people would try it! #livingdonorweek

I had known that my mum had a problem with her kidneys since I can remember, I would always say as a kid “You can have my kidney mummy”. I would always get the same response “Thanks Sammy, but mummy doesn’t need YOUR kidney” yet in 2021 she needed just that! #livingdonorweek

I grew up with kidney infections. I finally had my left kidney removed but would need a transplant. I became a teacher, where I met Anne, an exceptional friend who became a live donor for me. I am healthier than ever. I can’t thank her enough. #livingdonorweek

Next week is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science - so we are looking at some of the amazing women working in transplantation! Surgeon Emily Thompson received funding from us which enabled her to undertake a transformative six-month travel fellowship in 2016!

Doctors are trained to look for 'horses not zebras' when they hear 'hooves' teaching them to look for the common conditions. However they also have to be wary of rare 'zebra' conditions, often those who have transplants could be described as zebras, with the unusual conditions.

Ava (5) was born with a rare condition: Surfactant Protein C Deficiency. She was oxygen-dependent and tube-fed. Her only hope was a double lung transplant. After 2.5 years she got new lungs and can now run around, eat normally and loves school - all thanks to organ donation.
