The level starts off with a classic Level Design technique, the funnel-before-reveal. Essentially, I can build breathtaking vistas from these spots because I know for sure that every player will walk these exact steps and see the same composition

After the first big combat encounter, the player is able to unlock a shortcut rope back to their savepoint, but it’s positioned a little to the side. To ensure every player at least sees the shortcut, I spawn a single B1 droid to grab your attention with some blaster fire

This level takes place closer to the end of the game, and so I wanted to challenge the player with unique and interesting traversal opportunities. The “Grapple Bomb” was something I came up with to make more verbs work in synergy. In this case Push, Pull, and Grapple

Likewise, the moving wall run panels emerged as an attempt to make a more dynamic level. The Observatory has lots of moving parts that make it feel alive, whether they affect gameplay or not

Followup from yesterday’s paper design. I went over it with a promarker to display depth, but left the two biggest holes to be filled in photoshop so that my marker wouldn’t break. They’re expensive!

1. Sand Waterfalls.
What's cool about placing bridges like this is that they provide the feeling of refuge when you walk under them and prospect when you walk across them. Btw can main paths be behind waterfalls or is that reserved for secrets? lol

9. Victorian Library.
In this level I start the player on the second floor to scout the area before forcing them down to the action.
It's important to find elevation even in spaces that might not usually have it, check this awesome conversation pit!

2. Collapsed Garage.
The idea here is that the bottom floor has been flooded, and the roof has collapsed by an alien pod that crashed. You hit the locked gate, enter the pod, and loop back around from the second floor

I got my mother to play a video game with me for the first time in her life. We played Super Mario Odyssey for an hour or so. It's interesting to see someone learn the language of video games, like simply moving around in a 3D space. Hopefully we can play more soon!!
