Nothing worthwhile going on this month so let’s hail some Confederates! General Jean-Jacques-Alfred-Alexandre "Alfred" Mouton As a Colonel of the 18th Louisiana Infantry Regiment, he fought and was wounded at Shiloh. After, he returned to Louisiana, was made General and paired with General Taylor. They repelled Union attacks up and down the Bayou Teche proving to be one of the best duos of Generals in the war. He died bravely leading a charge at the battle of Mansfield. Taylor had this to say about Gen. Mouton: "Above all the death of the gallant Mouton affected me ... modest, unselfish, and patriotic. He showed best in action always leading his men." Hail General Mouton!

Through the wire screen the eyes of those standing outside looked in at her as into the cage of some rare creature in a zoo in the hand of one of the assistants she saw the same instrument which they had that morning inserted deep into her body she shuddered instinctively no life at all in the house of dolls no love lost.

Nothing worthwhile going on this month so let’s hail some Confederates! Sam Davis. Sam comes from Tennessee and was born in 1842. He was training at Western Military Institute at the start of the war. In 1861 he enlisted as a private in the 1st Tennessee Infantry Regiment. Sam fought at Cheat Mountain, Shiloh and Perryville. After being wounded at Perryville he was moved to Coleman’s scouts. In 1863 he was captured in Union territory with intelligence in his possession. He was held at Pulaski which was under the command of Gen. Grenville Dodge. Sam refused to give up his informants. He was found guilty of espionage charges and Dodge ordered him to be hanged “where all can see.” He was delivered to the gallows atop his own coffin and was hanged on 11/27/1863. A witnessing Union soldier noted “He stood it like a man," “He never paled a bit but stood it like a hero." The officer leading the execution was taken back by Sam’s disposition and looked to be hesitant. Sam said "Officer, I did my duty. Now, you do yours." In 1866 his father commissioned a monument to Sam at their plantation in Smyrna, Kentucky. Sam is one of the most reviews Civil War heroes from Tennessee and was awarded the Confederate Medal Of Honor by the Son’s of the Confederacy. Some other quotes attributed to Sam before his execution: While riding on his coffin he said “Would you betray a friend?" I had rather die a thousand deaths." As he climbed the gallows he said “the boys will have to fight the battles without me.” S Hail the Boy Hero of the Confederacy!
