@saravdwerf I don't know if this is making sense, but it's inspired by this context

@mathillustrated I would add that the experience-the doing-does not equate to learning. It is through reflection/internalization of the experience that learning occurs. That requires dialogue-even if only internal-mediated through social norms and processes

@SciInTheMaking Every learner has to build from their foundation. Explicit instruction assumes everyone receives the knowledge as provided. Inquiry assumes everyone interprets their experience. Inquiry provides rich experiences and then support in interpreting that experience using formal math

@SciInTheMaking All learning builds on foundational knowledge. The foundation is different for each learner. Inquiry makes space to connect to new ideas in personal ways through a mathematically rich social experience. It is research. Then the teacher connects experience to formal understanding

@Acyn I'm torn when I see our State Supt getting national attention. It's what he wants, so I hate it. It might help him accomplish his goals. I also want the country to see MAGA and Christian Nationalism two steps in advance.

@profsamperry @nmhollan12 Is this true that he's famous outside of our state? I've been wondering if other regions are aware of his behavior. This latest move feels like one step from an SNL sketch-which might get him the notoriety he wants.

@tweetraychang He validates people’s fears, blames them on “others,” and provides simplistic solutions.

@StudyMaths Maybe not most efficient, but I thought 28x100=2800, 28x50=1400, halfway between is 75x28 which is 2100.

@mathillustrated Yes, and...Does the benefit of discovery learning come from the opportunity students have to connect mathematics to an intellectually active experience? Does the deep connection matter the most? Aren't there many ways to build that connection between the learner and the math?

@DevonGoggins No one has figured out a way to draw the legal line on abortions without endangering women's lives. Let's keep working to find a solution. Until then, if you want to save babies lives, abortions decrease under democratic presidents. Let's build a country were life is valued

@MrsSheehanMath We recommended it to our 9th grade tutees as part of a high-dosage tutoring model. We didn’t assign it as a grade, but quite a few of our tutoring groups decided to use it as an opener for tutoring sessions

@profsamperry Why does the Democratic Party claim responsibility? The church provided a permission structure for all types of dehumanizing behavior. If democrats are considered evil and demonic, no strategy or platform will work. Rhetoric and policy are obsolete.

@alfiekohn We can’t measure the amount of knowledge someone possesses. But can’t we measure how much knowledge a person can recollect, apply, analyze, create and so on? This seems useful in addition to the qualitative change. The bigger problem is relying on one measure only.

@CoreyJPeltier Here's one. The distributive examples don't show up until farther down with the larger factors.

@CoreyJPeltier It's really hard for me to imagine a scenario where a student stays over-reliant on the arrays, such as counting squares one at a time. I also really like subitizing cards that add shading in the arrays to develop the distributive property.

@CoreyJPeltier I don't see a need to remove it. I don't see the array as less sophisticated and something to be discarded. I value connections between models rather than a progression from concrete to abstract. The area model also transcends whole numbers......

@CoreyJPeltier Hi, Corey! I use this with my 1st and 3rd grade daughters. I suggest it as a tool for students. It sounds like you're suggesting there's a dichotomy between conceptual understanding and fluency. I don't see the benefit or logic behind isolating them from each other.
