It's not all the bugs that are concerning me. The core gameplay is unrecognizably basic, like a mobile game e.g. Highest powered passes would get intercepted at close range and the ball would get absorbed into the player's run, the way any simple-minded mobile game would behave.

A big reason why I stopped playing eFootball was that all the matches felt the same: Same camera, same weather, same grass, same nighttime lighting, same stadium, even the same players (Haaland, Messi, Mbappe, Ronaldinho) compared to PES on PC where every single match was unique.

There is a complete lack of inertia to the ball, like a mobile game. All shooting feels flat, with no relationship to the player's momentum, like a mobile game. There are no 'upcoming special kick' or patches that can fix core gameplay problems. This is just the new reality.

, players with a 'long-range shooting' trait will be able to produce that lovely dip with a half-volley, even if it bounces too high off the ground. Check out the ball spin physics which lead to the dip.

An example of gameplay that is only possible with manual controls. CR7 pushes the ball behind Wan-Bissaka, forcing him to turn back to collect it. Then the cross lands ahead of Cavani, making him move towards it, to flip it into the goal. You lose this randomness with assistance.

The realism of PES wasn't all about the graphical mods; it was the way players moved on the pitch, inspiring each other to make dribbles, make room for others to run, follow others etc. It was a very organic-looking chaos that made goal more unpredictable, variable, and enjoyable

PES has been free-to-play since Fall 2016. The free 'Lite' version was the exact same game, but without offline modes. The difference with eFootball is that they don't have to release a separate 'Lite' version anymore, and you can choose the offline modes you want to pay for.
