LOTS of thanks go to Gateshead Council for the provision of the Kittiwake Tower; an artificual structure that provides a forever home during the spring/summers months for the local colonies of Kittiwakes. Amazing photo by Andy Rickeard - July 2021.

Ferry Mews Building - North Shields in North Tyneside
So, here is the first entry for the 'BEST Kittiwake NEST' for the 2021 breeding Season. Despite the anti-bird netting that was added to the colonies favourite building, Kittiwakes managed to nest; on TOP of the netting.
adult & a juv Tyne Kittiwake now dead on the Vermont ApartHotel on Newcastle Quayside. 4th year in a row where at least 2 Kittiwakes lost their lives in same area. At what point
@TheVermontHotel
does this become a wildlife crime? how many years? how many birds?

I'm actually shaking with anger.. 😡😡 Just popped to my local
@asda
in Bridgwater, Somerset and found that they put bloody anti-bird netting up.. and look, there's already a dead pigeon caught in it!!! 😡😡
Not sure if the Gull is caught or not.. TAKE THE BLOODY NETTING DOWN!!
Kittiwake street art on an empty shop in Scarborough by Mark Chamberlain from 2021. Kittiwakes and seagulls are very much part of the Scarborough experience for this COASTAL sea town.
The Walrus has come to complain about the awful anti-bird gel that has just been added on the Scarborough Spa Bridge that will make 270 pairs of RED-listed Kittiwakes homeless. As a coastal town, sealife is part of the experience.

Lots of Tyne Kittiwakes have returned the past couple of days. After enjoying the familiar scenery of the Newcastle/Gateshead Quaysides, they have been finding their favourite places to relax and start to build their nests for another season.
So today we have been checking in on the Tyne Kittiwakes. On Thursday, only a couple were present but were being scared off by a group of 40+ Crows. Today up to 2 dozen Kittiwakes were on the Kittiwake Tower however. Welcome Home. Gr8 to see them back there.
Kittiwakes upon the River Tyne. Helping to protect and raise awareness for the Kittiwakes along the River Tyne, including the Newcastle and Gateshead Quayside.

We are currently exploring options & contacting local stakeholders, to see if we can secure a Kittiwake Tower Cam for the '22 season. This would be a great way to study these artificial structures; especially as more are likely to be needed. Photo by

The Gateshead Kittiwake Tower
Over one-hundred pairs of Kittiwakes currently nest on the Kittiwake Tower and there continues to be capacity for more should the Kittiwakes themselves choose to nest there.
Sadly 10 mins into checking on the Tyne Kittiwakes this pm,an adult was found trapped on the Bessie Surtees building close to some new tall spikes on Newcastle Quayside. RSPCA & Fire Service attended & bird rescued but injuries substantial. Thanks go to everyone that helped today
Wishing the Kittiwakes lots of luck again when they return to the Spa Bridge in Scarborough. We will be visiting Scarborough again, but this time in June, when their story has started to play out more. Yorkshire council should green flag the Spa Bridge, for Kittiwakes to nest.
some live footage just now of Tyne Kittiwakes on the Baltic. To view watch them live from the comfort of your own home, please visit the Durham Wildlife Trust Website link below
Happy New Year on behalf of ALL Kittiwakes everywhere! "Kittee-wa-aaake, Kittee-wa-aaake” A soft, friendly, loyal and patient seagull that joins us in our URBAN world to nest, as with climate changing, overfishing & pollution their world is really tough now. They need R help!
With Avian-Flu, less food & wet & windy weather; fewer pairs have returned to nest along the Tyne. As a sign of respect, for a seabird where populations are diving worldwide; a colony which is the furthest inland in the world & part of local heritage; please don't hold this event

During the 2017-18 Kittiwake breeding season, four birds were trapped on the vermont hotel; sadly two died. No changes were made following this and the netting at the top remains a trap, and is again trapping fledged Kittiwakes this weekend. Hotel was informed last year of Risk
Hundreds of Kittiwakes are starting to pair up, on the Tyne Bridge. A large portion of the colony has still not returned yet & their remains plenty of room for their feathered friends when they arrive. It is interesting to note, specific areas are filling up first.
Sadly whilst checking on the Kittiwakes today we found 'a trapped Kittiwake' that had been fatally injured in anti-bird netting under the Tyne Bridge. A Kittiwake continues to nest to the right, hopefully the dead bird was not its partner. Sad times.
One of the young Kittiwakes that is doing well on the Tyne Bridge. The recent wet weather has caused many problems for coastal populations of nesting seabirds. The Tyne Kittiwakes seek refuge in our 'Big City' and benefit from calmer weather patterns.

“kittee-wa-aaake, kittee-wa-aaake”. “kittee-wa-aaake, kittee-wa-aaake”. They will be back along the River Tyne very soon. If you see one before us please us know by including

Last year our Tyne Kittiwakes had big problems with anti-bird netting in Newcastle. This year Sand Martins have issues in Bacton, Norfolk. Thanks go to Bea for her amazing efforts and dedication to lead a campaign to help the Sand Martins.
Kittiwakes nesting on the Baltic Gallery.They will be leaving us soon. LOTS of thanks go to the Gallery for providing a FOREVER home for these red-listed birds so they can bring life to the next generation of Kittiwakes. A viewing platform & educational activities at Baltic
The Saltmeadows Tower Page on our website has been updated in the Colonies Section today. The Tower is great for research and a FOREVER home for the Tyne Kittiwakes - a GREEN flagged colony
A handsome Kittiwake from the Tyne Bridge. Short black legs and a gentle personality are key features. They don't scavenge for food, but instead fly over 11 miles to feed out at sea.
A pair of Kittiwakes successfully nested on the Premier Inn; whilst dozens of Kittiwakes raised young Kittiwakes on the Guildhall/Clocktower-Newcastle Quayside this year. We very much enjoyed watching the chicks develop into the next generation of Kittiwakes. Did you see them?

Despite the anti-bird netting added to the ferry mews building in North Shields; pairs of Kittiwakes have nested on top of the Anti-bird netting & along the guttering. They are now more spread out. They have also nested on a building nearby.
Meet the 'Kittiwake Inspector' She thinks this anti-bird netting looks very unattractive; the metal pins used to attach it have damaged the stonework lots to attach this ugly netting. Whats more attractive handsome cute friendly Kittiwakes or anti-bird netting with metal pins?
Update- North Shields - 3 pairs cosy up to each other on ledges on a building opposite ferry mews, whilst over 15 birds pairing up on rain gutters of ferry mews building itself. FULL update in our 'Kittiwake DIARY' section on our website at
We are in Scarborough Mon-Thurs next week. Looking to see how the displaced Kittiwakes are doing. Where will they nest for the 2023 season? How are they interacting wit the newly installed anti-bird deterrents on the bridge? Featuring some Live Coverage.
The Tyne Kittiwakes love the Tyne Bridge towers and they are packed with nesting birds at this time. Watching us all from high above. A Great use for this famous structure. "kittee-wa-aaake, kittee-wa-aaake"
Guildhall - Newcastle Quayside
As this year dawned, new spikes were installed were the 3 pairs nested last year.
What did the Kittiwakes think? Well it looks like some of those Kittiwakes have now returned. As you can see it is not impressed to see the spikes.
The weekend has arrived. We are checking this afternoon to see how many more Kittiwakes have arrived. So exciting, time to celebrate the return of the Tyne Kittiwakes....
@SteelySeabirder
puts the spotlight on the incredibly cute Kittiwakes this week (not biased).
It's time to share again the kittiwakes dancing mambo video !🎵💃(sound on)
Awful events happening down in Scarborough. It all makes no sense, as after all the money/time/effort the council have spent, they are just moving the Kittiwakes on to nearby buildings. Using the bridge was more rational, common sense. Crazyness what council have done!
....small harmless gulls. This is scandalous use of public funds to displace a UK RED LISTED species from a non sensitive site. Yes gull proofing is needed on some town centre buildings but NOT HERE! 2,500 gel tubs @ >£5 a unit plus contractor costs. Please explain how this is...
A loving pair of Kittiwakes, building their nest & growing a garden of grass on top of anti-bird spikes in Scarborough Town Centre. Spikes are pointless, why does council/owners waste money on them.
Over 60 Kittiwakes back on the Baltic, with over 100 relaxing on the Tyne Bridge. over 25 on railway bridge, and at least 50 more elsewhere on the quaysides of Newcastle & Gateshead. “Kittee-wa-aaake, Kittee-wa-aaake”
Their nests at Tynemouth Haven look so comfy. We are editing a short video from Tynemouth haven of Kittiwakes & Sand Martins & this will be available over coming days....
When we visited Tynemouth Cliffs last week, we didn't find any Kittiwakes, however when we visited yesterday; over a HUNDRED were in the area. Most were opposite their usual nesting site sitting on the sea in a large group. 30-35 were on the cliffs, getting cosy.
Who is the winner of the best Tyne Kittiwake nest this year? Choices are: No1 built alongside Avi-shock-Guildhall, No2 Stepping Stone Trio Tyne-Bridge, No3 Laverne+Shirley
#HighLife
, No4 Kitty Triangle 1, 2, 3 or 4?
Over the past 3 years this type of netting on Newcastle Quayside has been proven to trap and at times we loose some of the birds. It can become damaged in storms/strong winds, birds can fly into it,& some land on it or even still try to nest. Its an accident waiting to happen
The Baltic is so quiet without the famous Tyne Kittiwakes. The Tyne Bridge is so much happier when decorated with Kittiwakes, singing their fav song. Wishing them a safe return so we can follow their story in 2024. Website will be updated over the coming weeks.
Great photo; canny hotels. To everyone at Tyne Kittiwakes Partnership, including the amazing Dan Turner that puts so much effort in with valuable research. Thank You! “Kittee-wa-aaake, Kittee-wa-aaake”.
Fri, 16 Feb 2024.
Great to see the two newly completed kittiwake ‘hotels’ at the Gateshead side of the Tyne Bridge, waiting for the gulls to take advantage. Many years of discussions preceded (on helping the nesting kittiwakes during the four-year bridge works) with
@NewcastleCC
Three Kittiwakes enjoying an afternoon nap. Every year thousands of Kittiwakes, make the long journey to the British Isles from the world’s second largest ocean; the Atlantic. They must be tired from their long journey.
Whilst in North Shields today we were able to view the area that has been netted from the ferry landing again. A single Kittiwake was present on a ledge on the building opposite. evidence that more birds had been present. More similar ledges on same building. fingers crossed.
Finally a couple of Kittiwakes from the Gateshead side of the River. The Tyne Bridge is a popular nesting site for the Kittiwakes and dozens have settled in already. These two were high up on the tower, enjoying the comforts of urban life.
Over 100,000 objected to anti bird netting on quayside & netting was removed. Your efforts to object make a difference. Please help object to this housing plan. Gosforth Park is 1 of the most amazing places. The egg timer is almost empty, so please object asap. 🦕 🦖
One of this years new arrivals from the Tyne Bridge. Lots of fledged Kittiwakes enjoying the quaysides of Newcastle and Gateshead at this time. They will be off out to sea very soon.
black legs & their smaller size, make Tyne Kittiwakes easier to distinguish from other gulls, that live with us along the quaysides of Newcastle & Gateshead.
You can also view the Tyne Kittiwakes, nesting in their natural habitat on the cliffs at Tynemouth Haven. Details for Tyne Haven can be found at
Again, you can view them extremely well. Fulmars and Sand Martins are also present.
Shame the building that houses
@WaterstonesSCA
(Scarborough) has these anti-bird spikes. With all those books, shame 1 does not explain how these spikes don't stop birds nesting. Red-listed, struggling with a changing climate, shrinking food supplies, Kittiwake's need are help!
This is how
@NewcastleCC
welcomes red-listed Tyne Kittiwakes. tall,SHARP anti-bird spikes. Despite challenges & many uncomfortable sessions, pairs successfully nested again this season on side of Guildhall. Is so sad to watch them battling with spikes.
A few more Kittiwakes have arrived over the past week. Seven still remain committed to the Baltic; whilst the small group around the Tyne Bridge North Tower now numbers at least 17 birds. So thats about a two dozen Kittiwakes on Newcastle/Gateshead Quayside so far.
Marsden Rock in South Tyneside. The home of amazing seabird colonies. You can relax on the beach from the Grotto, and immerse yourself in the sounds/smells of the SEAside.
The 'Red House' has 4 pairs starting to nest & pair up.
This is an example of Kittiwakes nesting peacefully in an urban environment. A live nature show for everyone to enjoy. A seabird come to spend the summer with us.
hi
@TyneKittiwakes
@NEE_Naturalist
here are photos of a Kittiwake not only nesting on the building that houses the Premier Inn, but also of the fledged chick. it says in the report no birds nested and how unsuitable the building is. but one pair did nest. I watched them often.
Hundreds of gentle, peaceful Kittiwakes displaced from the Spa Bridge in Scarborough by
@northyorksc
Thousands spent on anti-bird gel, that will be needed to be replaced every few years. We are in Scarborough this week, checking on the homeless Kittiwakes. Where will they go?
Despite the addition of anti-bird spikes on the side of the Guildhall this year; 5 pairs of Kittiwakes have nested. that is 2 more pairs than last year. 2-3 pairs are also nesting on top of the avi shock high above.
