Thursday's forum was an opportunity for me to explain exactly why returning to the science of reading, phonics, and decoding is so important! As you can see, I am very passionate about this issue. We need to do SO MUCH better for our Wisconsin kids!

I stopped by the Education Committee hearing to record my support for Assembly Bill 1 to restore high academic standards for Wisconsin students. It’s hard to believe our current DPI Superintendent could be against the bill, but she is!

At a time when Wisconsin has the highest achievement gap in the nation, we should look to states like Louisiana for opportunities to adopt their policies that led to what many call "historic progress."

Only 9% of MPS students who took the reading exam were proficient in reading. This is a five-alarm fire. Our students deserve so much better!

This is why change is needed at DPI! The current Superintendent lowered standards for Wisconsin students. I will restore them.
