This ad, which dropped today, perfectly sums up my motivation for running for office.
I could really use your help, though. Now's the time for your financial support to help me get this message out there. The real fight is at the local level!
Thank you!
Made a transphobic joke.
Got a huge laugh from a crowd of transphobes.
Good for you for picking on one of the most marginalized members of the community,
@NancyMace
. Good for you!
Imagine what South Carolina could accomplish if the legislators at the podium today seeking State mandated pregnancies would instead pursue with the same vigor the problems of pervasive poverty, unaffordable healthcare, and our struggling public school system.
Separation of Church and State is a fantasy in the South y'all. You'll hear more Bible verses read during a County Council meeting than you'll get at any Southern Baptist revival.
A plea to my fellow Democratic candidates: Do not deactivate your accounts & slip back into private life. You had a strong message this past year and it needs to be continued! Even if you don't run again, you've worked hard to expand your voice and platform - help others with it!
It's only a matter of time before gun violence touches every family like it did mine tonight. My step-daughter's friend was vacationing with us when she got the call today that her boyfriend of three years was killed by gunfire. We're now taking her home. 😢🙏
It's a horrific feeling to have someone else's will imposed upon you, especially when you know without a doubt it could lead to your physical harm or even death.
I can't imagine what millions of women in SC are feeling right now. Betrayed? Fearful? Angry? Sad? All of the above?
The amazing potential for South Carolina to lead the nation in business opportunity, education opportunity, and innovation opportunity is squandered by General Assembly members who are laser focused on invented social issues that move us forward not one single inch!
The most dangerous woman in
#SouthCarolina
. Completely unqualified for her role as State Superintendent of Ed (her Masters Degree was donated to her by Bob Jones U), she broke up with the school librarian association & now wants the state to determine what books get banned.
It's not a sad day because Donald Trump was indicted.
It was sad the day when millions of people thought his behavior and incompetence was perfectly fine to to vote him in as President to begin with.
Parental rights. Religious liberty. 🤢
"The Wyoming Republican Party is seeking to kill a bill... to raise the state's legal marriage age to 16, arguing that putting 'arbitrary' limits on child marriage interferes with parental rights & religious liberty"
I am equal parts impressed and incredulous at how some of our legislators in Columbia can sit there calmly and not lose their **** at the insane things that come out of their fellow lawmakers' mouths.
I refuse to believe the average South Carolina voter is ok with this.
I refuse to accept legislators who believe CRT is a more important "problem" to solve than this.
The South Carolina Law Enforcement Division (SLED) sent out it's 2021 crime report just a bit ago.
"We have seen murders increase 52% over the past ten years," SLED Chief Mark Keel said.
My legislative philosophy is simple: The state government needs to get back to managing the state's business and stop getting so involved in your personal business.

Has a living kidney donor, it was an honor to CHOOSE to give up my organ for another. I cannot imagine having that choice imposed upon me.

"We don't do things in
#SouthCarolina
like they do in DC," Republicans down here like to brag.
Yet none of them, in an amazing display of lack of self-awareness, mention we're one of the biggest federal welfare states in the nation! (ranked 7th)
"South Carolina’s Constitution expressly prohibits the state from directly funding religious or other private educational institutions, and the state Supreme Court has, as recently as two years ago, upheld that prohibition."
The law is the law. What more needs to be said?
It doesn't matter what side of the aisle good ideas come from. This below and the Republican-proposed elimination of tax on women's menstrual products are welcome. But they would have been more welcome YEARS AGO when D's proposed them & R's fought against!
I will be canvassing today in "hostile" territory. Of course, these are good people who just happen to normally vote differently than I do. But if I'm going to win this thing, I'll need to convert a certain % of them. And I think I have a compelling sales pitch to do just that!
"Palmetto State’s murder rate has risen to a near 30-year high"
What else has happened in the past 30 years? A Republican supermajority in the SC General Assembly that promoted expansion of firearm accessibility without accountability.
#ThinkDifferentSC
"Constitutional carry" proponents have complete disdain for the US Constitution.
To espouse the idea of ZERO regulations, no controls, and outlawing common sense requirements to ensure public safety is completely contrary to the very first words of the

If you listen to one podcast episode today, let this be the one. It was phenomenal!
@piper4missouri
has become such a role model for those who battle long odds in rural southern America. Thank you Jess!
Here’s the podcast that hundreds of you asked us to record!
@WalshFreedom
and I discuss school choice and vouchers. We are on nearly opposite sides of the issue, but we found common ground. I hope you’ll listen and share.
Wow: Tennessee state Rep. Justin Jones, one of the Dems that the GOP is trying to expel from state legislature to protesting gun violence, calls out his colleagues on the floor
‘For years, one of your colleagues, an admitted child molester, sat in this chamber – no expulsion’
This is so underappreciated! All the man has done is work and deliver, often without fanfare. Just roll back to the near global economic collapse of 2020 that he inherited and realize how far we've come, all without a Dem majority in both houses (thanks to Manchin & Sinema).
As our opponent, John McCravy, and others like him continue to suck the air out of the room on this extremely restrictive abortion bill, I want to share a personal story as to why this piece of legislation is going to ruin lives.

I have officially filed to run for South Carolina State House in District 13.
I am running for my step-daughter so that she can begin her life as a young adult without being burdened by crippling medical debt and find affordable housing in a neighborhood that's safe.

Denying medical care to a patient in need. 😢
"Love thy neighbor" has just gone out the window. Should we be allowed to let a house burn because it has a Trump2020 flag? Should a car accident victim be left to bleed because of a COEXIST bumper sticker?
Well, when your master's degree was "God-given" from Bob Jones University in only 6 months, I can see why she feels the need to insert her religion into our public schools.

They say SCOTUS is above politics, unswayed by public sentiment, using only logic & the Constitution to issue opinions.
That's completely out the window now, right? We can't count on the Supreme Court to protect us from radical state legislators anymore.
Well look here. To the surprise of no one, SC is ranked at the bottom of the 2023 Quality of

We know the Republican legislators aren't tired of being stuck at the bottom. But when will the VOTERS of
#SouthCarolina
be tired of this?

it's a warning of what happens when culture wars are waged by lawmakers.
Doubling down on denying people's right to merely exist. Always seeing those who are different from you as a threat.

As a girl mom and woman who has broken glass ceilings, you’re exactly right, I don’t want biological men taking away the achievements of women and girls.
Win or lose, my love for South Carolina has only grown and the people I meet amaze me every day. You really can't color the state "red", despite the gerrymandered lopsidedness of the general assembly. This experience has only increased my determination to fight for ALL!
Let the people decide??? The way these lifelong politicians protect each other regardless of the scandal is amazing.
Make a $4B accounting error? No problem!
Seems like the only crime a Republican will get called out on is criticizing Trump for Jan 6.
Imagine a law that shields doctors, healthcare providers & insurance agencies from civil/criminal liability if they deny services because you are Jewish, wear a MAGA hat or like the Gamecocks instead of the Tigers.
That's exactly what this law does.

Did you know that
#SouthCarolina
ranked 5th in the nation in 2022 for mass shootings?
What's going on? We have a supermajority of "law and order" politicians that have been running this state for years. Whatever they're doing (or not doing) isn't working!
You get a law degree.
You build a local practice.
You find yourself elected to represent multiple counties.
And you are comfortable making this claim about students asking for cat litter in the bathroom?
If that's not the definition of UNFIT TO LEAD, I don't know what is.
New candidate lesson learned: Do not attempt to canvas during a Clemson or South Carolina football game. Just don't.
I knocked on one door during yesterday's Clemson/Wake Forest game and a rabid fan tried to bite me. The dog had to pull him away. 😬
This is such an incredible story. The tragic miscarriage of justice for the Central Park Five will forever be a stain on American History.
Now Salaam is an elected leader in his community. How inspirational!
Donald Trump took out a full page ad in the NYT calling for Yusef Salaam and the wrongfully convicted Central Park Five to be put to DEATH.
Even after they were exonerated Trump still supported his original statement. Today Yusef Salam was just elected to the NYC City Council
I posted some eye-opening stats on how South Carolina is lagging other states in many key metrics.
This is the response I get.
And this is why South Carolina will remain at the bottom of those lists if we don't get out and overcome them with our votes.
"'Black is a Rainbow Color' is an illustrated children’s book meant to introduce young children to Black American history and identity."

We have over 300,000 children below the federal poverty level in SC and this is the nonsense they're focusing on?
How do we fix this for
#SouthCarolina
?
❌ Ban CRT (which isn't even taught) & DEI programs in schools & business?
❌ Ban ESG investment strategies?
❌ Give the death penalty to women who have abortions?
Repub legislators are wasting our time on nonsense!
I strongly encourage you to vote in SC's Democratic Presidential Primary! Don't mess around in that other primary - the best way to fight Trumpism is with a strong Democratic showing.

Great news! The event has been cancelled (or moved to a different spot - don't know, don't care). Thanks to all who contacted the elections commission to report this egregious violation of State Law!

Fact: 30,000 Black residents were moved out of SC Congressional District 1 (Mace) into District 6 (Clyburn).
Fact: This gerrymandered District 1 to be more secure for Republicans.
Fact: It diluted the power of the Black vote
Fact: SC lawmakers intended for this to happen.
BREAKING: Federal court allows South Carolina to use its current congressional map for the 2024 election, despite previously ruling that the districts are racially gerrymandered and discriminate against Black voters, because of delays from SCOTUS.

We need a contest to see which state has a legislator with the absolute worst take on any subject.
I submit the following on behalf of
#SouthCarolina
. Who has someone that can outdo this absolute troll?
Most of the kids of those Moms for Liberty types aren't even remotely interested in the books they want to ban.
But the ones who would be interested - they're the ones who are scared to death to come out to their parents, and for good reason. Those are the kids we fight for.
It's rare that I'm caught off guard but this editorial describing a Meet & Greet that I held during my campaign left me stunned.

I too received this from nowhere. Of course I cashed it and put it towards several liberal charities. But how is this different from COVID relief money or student debt relief that Republicans decry? This money could've been used for needed infrastructure.
Today's SC Senate debate was a stark reminder of the gross underrepresentation of women in the General Assembly. It took ALL FIVE women in the Senate (both D's and R's) to filibuster this medieval anti-abortion bill.

As a first-time candidate, it has been absolutely humbling to hear from people who shared they were excited to vote for me.
Look, I'm just a fellow human. My bedroom is a mess. My leaves need raking. I eat more burgers than salads. And I just want to make a difference!
I find the question, "Do you support the 2nd Amendment" to be a ridiculous one. Of course, I support it. It's part of the US Constitution!
What I don't support are extreme & twisted interpretations. We need a balance between "well-regulated" and "shall not be infringed".
The last 24 hrs have been frustrating to many as the House Committee spewed out their recommendations on a total abortion ban. I appreciate the following & publicity I've received as a result. That's just one issue I need to focus on and there's so much that needs fixing in SC!
While out canvassing this morning & meeting with voters in Hodges, on one street alone people shared stories with me of fighting cancer, dealing with crippling healthcare bills, and needing medical marijuana to manage pain. A Representative ought to heed their words and help out.
2022 will go down as one of the most rewarding of my life.
Starting in January when I donated a kidney, to finding a church I knew I could call home, and through to tonight with the ending of a campaign for State House: I sit here a better, richer human being.

I received a follow-up email from the NRA. They're encouraging me to fill out the questionnaire... or else!
You know, I didn't fill out the Applebee's survey last time I dined there. Hope they didn't think I was being outright hostile to them! 😂
Oh this is gonna be fun. Some advise me to ignore it. Not me - I'm going to fill it out. But I am curious as to how they'll word their questions.
Am I a

supporter? Of course! It's in the US Constitution! But I support the WHOLE amendment, not just a few cherrypicked words.

Although I didn't win in the election, I take great satisfaction seeing that my billboard is still up right outside my opponent's law office.

There's a lot of eulogizing of this

When I was a teen, it almost took an act of God for me to get a pocket knife. I had to pass strict Boy Scout safety training and have the best grades for my parents to agree.
Today's lawmakers & the NRA are perfectly fine with TEENS owning these weapons.
I'm proud of the endorsement received from
@PPSATSC
. We see what happens when power goes unchecked and zealots push extreme laws that force women and girls into state-mandated pregnancies, even in the case of rape, incest, and sexual exploitation of minors.
You can march. You can write letters. You can share your outrage on social media.
The only thing that WILL work is to elect enough representatives who will do something, anything, to end these mass shootings.
But declaring SC to be a 2nd Amendment "Sanctuary State"?

"Of the 124 seats that will be voted on across the state...a total of 45 of those seats feature 34 Republicans and 11 Democrats with absolutely no opposition at all. This is no way to run a democracy."
Agreed 100%, Andy. This is exactly why *I* filed.
If we want change in South Carolina we must show courage! Sitting on the sidelines is a guarantee of the status quo - if not worse.
I hope that in 2024 those same orgs who fight for causes & for their members will be more courageous in supporting even long-shot candidates.

Worked a fish fry all day. Got a little sun-kissed.
I'm happy to get my hands dirty & sweat in the sun to spread the word that there's a far better choice on the ballot this year. One that's rooted in hope, not fear. One that wants to govern state business, not your private life
I have never been able to get used how tightly religion is interwoven into politics - on both sides of the aisle!
My spiritual journey is complicated and still ongoing. But with such diversity in belief systems I can't see imposing mine onto someone else through legislation.
Regarding the all-male SC Supreme Court's support of the 6-week abortion ban: There's little I can add that hasn't been said by many, many others - so I encourage you to listen to the women whose bodies are now under government regulation.

Ironically, Erskine College is itself an accreditation factory for charter schools all over South Carolina, including a new one that Moms for Liberty wants to create (can you imagine?).
