Obviously, things have changed with the new Trump Administration, although I have yet to see the SEC pull its lawsuits against #Ripple, and it's that lawsuit that had frozen prospects of working with G20 central banks. And although it's still early days, I haven't detected a thawing of those prospects. Mind you, I think the whole global #CBDC industry has changed a lot since 2021, and Ripple and many other digital currency platform vendors are not as aggressively pursuing CBDC business. There's just not much money in it, because G20 central banks are largely DIYers, and most non-G20 central banks can't or won't pay. So, let's circle back if and when the SEC pulls those Ripple lawsuits!

The International Telecommunications Union (ITU), a specialized agency of the United Nations responsible for matters related to information and communication technologies, published a report that I co-wrote on a central bank digital currency (CBDC) reference architecture. Its aim is to work towards standardizing how different CBDCs can be evaluated and compared. The report was derived from the ITU's earlier work on digital currency ontological work and is organized around the IMF's “ASAP” model that describes digital asset systems in terms of four functional layers - access, service, asset, and platform. The resulting reference architecture is based on, and informed by, recent CBDC launches, pilots and proofs of concept (i.e., it does not consider prospective future architectures).

I've updated my tabulation of the 105 central banks that have recently conducted launched, piloted, experimented with and/or researched retail central bank digital currency (#CBDC). This total is unchanged from the end of September 2024. It doesn't include the two that started issuing retail CBDC and then shut the platforms down (Ecuador and Finland). Also, keep in mind that I don't double count all of the individual national central banks that are part of currency unions (e.g., the European or Eastern Caribbean Currency Unions).
