I’m so amazed at how Dubai authorities figured out that the best way to impose a city-wide curfew to 3M residents is to fine violators through traffic radars! No physical force or tense encounters, just pure capitalism.
I tested positive for COVID about five days ago. Since then, Dubai’s Health Authority (DHA) has called me every day to check up on my health, and today they literally asked about my emotional well-being through this. I am actually stunned at the level of care they’ve shown.
🧵 As digital transformation ramps up in the UAE, job applicants are no longer expected to just have basic digital skills like knowing how to use Microsoft office. Increasingly, applicants will need to also be adept in more technical software, here’s a list to keep you ahead:
A sorrowful day for all Emiratis. His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed AlNahyan, the second president of the UAE, and ruler of Abu Dhabi, has passed away. May God rest his soul, and our condolences to his family and to the people of the UAE

This is an aerial snapshot of Dubai in the 1930s. During this time, Dubai’s population barely touched 10,000 people, primarily residing in Bur Dubai, alShindigha, and Deira. This is where it all began.
An Emirati senior undergraduate student has been accepted into fully funded Physics PhD programs from Harvard, MIT, Stanford, Caltech, among others. It makes me extremely proud to see our generation of Emiratis flourish like this and hope more is to come.
Did you know that the UAE is developing an Arabic ChatGPT using ~10 billion parameters?
The Technology Innovation Institute (TII) is currently testing NOOR, a generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) model using the world’s largest high-quality cross-domain Arabic dataset.
One of the most impressive, but unfortunately overlooked, historical tools we have in the UAE is the Arabian Gulf Digital Archive (AGDA) which is an open repository of UAE-related archival material indexed and freely accessible online. Highly recommend checking it out
I would love to someday help produce a period drama set in 1960s Dubai, maybe focusing on the Infamous gold smugglers at the time. Have it streamed on Netflix with properly developed characters and narratives. So much potential.
My grandfather lived in a Dubai with only 20,000 people.
My father was born in a Dubai with only 50,000 people.
Today, we live in a Dubai that has more than 3,300,000 people.
I’m awestruck.
Satoshi Nakamoto — regardless of their true identity — should arguably be hailed as the most influential figure of the 21st century by creating what is thus far a $2 trillion dollar industry and potentially forever changing the global financial system.
🧵 Some 61 years ago in 1961, Dubai witnessed one of its worst disasters when the MV Dara was bombed, a few miles off the coast of Dubai by unknown assailants, leading to the deaths of 236 civilians, and injuring many more.
What Dubai has achieved that no other city in the region was able to do was become a home to everyone in it. When someone is from Dubai, they are Arab, Indian, Persian, English, African, Asian, and a hundred other things. Dubai accepts you as you are, regardless of who it may be.
Why The Emirates Mars Mission is an Emirati Achievement [A Thread]
A lot of criticism from skeptics in the Arab region on the “Emirati”-ness of the Hope probe. So I wanted to, and I hope to clarify some misconceptions here

Dismayed by the “Inside Dubai” BBC special. Portrays a glib representation of Dubai that in no way captures the eclecticism of our society, instead furthering misrepresentations of what Dubai is [a unique metropolis that captures the best of a globalized world]. Expected better
The UAE is about to experience a monetary renaissance. Yesterday, the Central Bank of the UAE (CBUAE) officially launched its CBDC strategy following several successful initiatives and pilot programs.

For 2 months under lockdown, hundreds of thousands in the UAE have used previously banned apps like Zoom and Skype, and our security infrastructure has not been compromised at all. Is it finally time for the prohibitive TRA regulations regarding VoIP apps be reconsidered?
Bayt AlMamzar is perhaps one of the best kept secrets and hidden gems of Dubai’s cultural scene.

found value in adapting their old family home into a multi-purpose exhibition space, art studio, and gallery, rather than leasing it out. Fantastic stuff!

I wish there were more Wikipedia pages about Emirati people. We barely have Wikipedia pages for the ministers in our current/past cabinets. Surely this could make for an exciting community initiative?
If this was done hundreds of years ago without any form of technology, what’s to stop it from taking place now? The UAE or Dubai specifically has one of the worlds lowest green space per capita and that is on the municipality.
🇦🇪 What are the makings of a youth minister?
In light of today’s significant announcement by the UAE Prime Minister, I asked some of the most engaged youth figures I have the honor of knowing, and we collectively came up with the following traits of a youth minister:

Would love to see an initiative to acquire local paintings, sculptures and art pieces to be integrated across all government offices/agencies, populating our public institutions with the essence of Emirati creativity.
The Emirati community today has lost one of its oldest icons and a pillar of our society, Saeed Lootah. My deepest condolences to the Lootah family for their loss, I am sure the UAE shares your grief.
Although unfortunate, the possible postponement of Expo 2020 to 2021 presents a unique opportunity for Dubai to showcase in Expo a much-needed message of global recovery. I think that Expo will now, more than ever, become a platform for development and growth.

Get into the habit of writing a journal — try to understand coherently what your thoughts are on an issue, what your reaction was to something you heard, or how your a social interaction impacted you. Consistently writing things down will help you understand yourself immensely.
I am proud that my generation of Emiratis are secure enough to realize that they are globally competitive in any field they set their minds to. Whether man or woman, the contemporary Emirati is determined, industrious, and ambitious.
The UAE should create a fund that sponsors International Students studying in Emirati universities. NYUAD does this and was able to attract the top talents from around the world, and it’s important for us not only to maintain this but accelerate its permeation into other unis
Expo 2020 is an apolitical, non-partisan forum for global solidarity and development. It’s the first World Expo that made sure every sovereign nation has its voice heard. As hosts we must not give in to those who are attempting to politicize or derail it.
We need more public art installations in Dubai. Imagine if we had a proper online platform that would allow artists to apply and have their installations be featured at various points in Dubai (think public park, beaches, even metro stations).
A beautiful ceremony for a beautiful event. The time has come for Dubai to deliver a message of tolerance, global community, and collaboration. To truly connect the minds, and build a new future for the world. Welcome to Expo 2020

The nation-building era in the UAE which focused capital to critical infrastructure (schools, hospitals, etc.) is largely over.
There’s a need today to develop civil society institutions, think tanks, and other conducive institutions to add nuance to our policy-making processes
The popular Dubai hangout spot, La Mer, is shutting down just 5 years after first opening to the public. While enjoyable, La Mer was highly susceptible to being mostly a seasonal venue, which could’ve contributed to its eventual shutdown.
Shaded areas in Dubai are about 40 degrees cooler than unshaded areas! This debunks, in part, the narrative that Dubai is “too hot” to be a walkable city. What we have is artificial man-made heat from the over abundance of unshaded asphalt areas.

I consider myself especially lucky and grateful to have had the opportunity to attend the UNSC’s first ever meeting on AI.

I’d really love to see a reinvention of Arab cinema. There’s so much to explore beyond your average soap drama plot. With Netflix investing heavily in creating Arabic content, I’d love to see emerging film students introduce noir filmography and other contemporary styles.

The UAE should lead the charge in developing an online, open source repository of academic textbooks and other educational material in Arabic.
Reducing barriers to entry to education in the region by making it more accessible is a game changer that could drive growth for decades
I don’t understand why large corporations in the UAE are much more likely to copy a start-up than just acquiring it through an M&A deal. This type of behavior is very hostile to innovation and prevents would-be entrepreneurs from setting up shop in the UAE.
Actually, there is in the United Arab Emirates a very small minority of Emirati Baha’i who moved here from Iran in the 1940s. I am very glad that minorities such as them (who were historically underrepresented in our legislations) have something to resort to.

The land Central Park occupies in Manhattan is worth well over $100bn. The reason why it was never repurposed or cut up for residential housing is because it was legally protected. Much to learn when it comes to community spaces in Dubai.

Huge development in immigration as the Green card is announced in the UAE - allowing employees to host themselves without having to rely on an employer to be eligible to live in the UAE. This has been developing for a while and it’s very happy to see this finally happen.
