Now covering Canucks for NHL.com after 10+ years with AP, USA Today + Hockey News; still stopping pucks for fun & picking NHL goalie brains for InGoal Magazine
When your teenage daughter is also a budding artist and totally gets your goalie vibe, you get the best Christmas gift ever! 😊 (and yes, cause some of you will point it out, that is a 28, she misread 29 in photo on the book on my dresser, and I couldn’t care less)
Brayden Point complimentary of Van: “They're explosive offensively … and they're a deep team. They don't give you a whole lot. They got a lot of guys that can skate, a lot of guys that check, they work hard + they got a great goaltender too, so they're a pretty complete team.”
First skate in Vancouver and first in Canucks colors for Vasily Podkolzin (wearing 92 on helmet) and first drill rep ends with mesh rippling high glove on Martin Jones … apologies for video quality, it’s my first day back too 😬
Jordan Eberle, walking by TV in the Mariners/Kraken locker room and seeing 3-3 Canada-Germany score at WJC: “What's going on here? Do they need me to get on a flight?"
While we celebrate Sedins amazing careers in Van tonight, at other end of continent old teammate Roberto Luongo plays his 1,000th game. Other goalies on that list: Patrick Roy, Martin Brodeur. That’s it. Remarkable achievement and career
Lost my dad somewhat suddenly last weekend + first photo below is my favourite one of us together … today, after an incredibly emotional week, my daughter gave me another favourite photo at volleyball nationals, taken after a good cry together 🥹
#resilience
#madeGrandpaProud
Coyotes coach Andre Tourigny very complimentary of the Canucks post game tonight: “My feeling after the [first] period is that's the best team we’ve played. They were fast, hard on pucks, they play well in their structure.”
As Canucks return from Christmas break, looks like all players are back from COVID-19 protocol: Tyler Motte, Tyler Myers, Tucker Poolman, Brad Hunt and Juho Lammikko all on the ice practicing
Casey DeSmith stayed out late with Ian Clark after every skate and practice this week, including couple times he was still on the ice after media had come and gone from locker room … huge bounce back W for the Canucks backup and popular teammate in Edmonton
Know the Igor Shesterkin Hart talk faded as

dipped from that crazy .942 + worthy forward candidates took off offensively, but worth noting his .936 SV% is still 29 points above NHL average, bigger than Dominik Hasek’s gaps (25 in 96-97 and 26 in 97-98) in his two Hart seasons
Jacob Markstrom’s new Calgary Flames mask contains a mystery tooth tribute to a teammate and OMFG that’s Chris Tanev’s music 😂😂😂More details and a video here:
Life on NHL taxi squad must get a little dull + repetitive, so fun to see Ottawa Senators extras keep it light with hockey's version of curling after a long, hard skate today … how’s their form

Still at loss over sudden closing of 1040 this morning; gutted for all involved making it the place to talk sports in Van for 20 years + thinking of so many good friends blindsided today. Here to really talk if you need an ear because it should be more than a meaningless hashtag
Translates to "Jonathan Dahlén has closed down his accounts on social media due to hateful messages from Vancouver fans.” I know it’s not all of you, but seriously Canucks nation?
Jonathan Dahlén har stängt ner sina konton på sociala medier p.g.a. hatiska meddelanden från Vancouver-fans.
"Jag har försökt hålla mig lite i skymundan nu och fokusera på att försöka må lite bättre."

Handful of Canucks still out long after practice having fun playing games with 1T — gotta go bar and in … Petey’s first 3 attempts: double post and out, bar and out, bar and in … Miller, Hughes, Horvat and Garland still trying to hit
And class from
#Canucks
DiPietro accepting it, and after: “Lose with dignity, lose with pride, because we’re still representing our great country here and it was honestly a privilege to play for them.”
Gaudette credits Canucks goalie coach Ian Clark for the move/shot he used on the winner; said he was surprised Demko didn’t cheat on his move given all the time he practiced it against him
How good has Thatcher Demko been, especially in March? At 17.21 goals saved above expected (per
@csahockey
) he's actually passed Vasilevskiy (13.67) and moved into 2nd place behind only Fleury (22.31) for the season.
Bruce Boudreau was pessimistic when asked yesterday about Elias Pettersson playing tonight after being sick 6 days: "He's a good player but he's not Superman."
Pettersson: "Hold my beer."
1 goal and 3 assists ... so far.
Enjoyed watching Jack Campbell play in Abbotsford tonight; 31/32 and first star in a 4-1 win … quite a difference from last visit 4 months ago; clean and controlled, looked like a guy who has rediscovered some swagger even
Interestingly, Kucherov asked for + got a stick from Kuzmenko outside locker room when they chatted post game here in Vancouver; remember thinking, shouldn’t it be other way around?
This has not been a good or typical performance by Jacob Markstrom; over active early, caught sliding uncharacteristically early on first 2, 3rd is a bad goal, flat out, and over active again and caught on 4th ... tell me again why back to back isn’t issue for goalies in bubble
Senators coach DJ Smith said veteran forward Artem Anisimov, who is on the taxi squad, was dressed in goalie gear and ready if Hogberg got hurt. New goalie coach Zac Bierk wasn’t option cause 3 hip surgeries post NHL career, + joked GM Pierre Dorion played some net at Xmas skate
Hey
@WestJet
when did you start overbooking flights and changing people to later flights without any notice or options? You’re pretty much screwing a youth volleyball team that will now be short players as they head to Nationals … this is totally unacceptable, fix your 💩
First shot in 18 months was from below dot, off stick of guy who played in NHL and was overseas just last season, and got me flush in mouth/bottom of cage … smell of burning rubber, the whole bit … and I’ve never been happier … just to be back on ice. I missed it so much.
No Morning Wood today + not just cause I had 🍻 last night thinking about friends who lost jobs at 1040 ... Wednesday morning won’t be same without getting to test my terrible ED word play on

Garrett Sparks says he actually got hit twice in the mask (by the same teammate) in practice when he got his concussion. He believes it was cumulative.

Tyler Myers just ended pre-game skate game of last puck with a Michigan goal on Demko, in case you wondered how high Canucks offensive confidence is right now
General Manager Jim Benning announced today that the club has signed right wing, Alex Chiasson, to a one-year contract worth an annual average value of $750,000.

“If you ever feel it, a lot of people try to hold it in. I just let it go because then you feel better 20 minutes later instead of feeling like crap all day.” Connor Garland, puking with a purpose

Oilers giving up more of most dangerous scoring chances off rush at 5-on-5 than any other NHL team: 2.86 expected goals against per game off high-danger shots is 32nd and TWICE as many as the top-6 teams ... also 27th on PK, all per

When
@mitchkorncaps
finally got to lift the Stanley Cup, tears were shed all over the world as thousands of his Children of the Korn celebrated with him. On the “immeasurable impact” of a coach, mentor and friend that go well beyond goaltending:
Got to spend an hour with a legend this morning; thanks to
@HockeyCanada
for letting me be a small part of your goaltending coaching certification seminar leading some of the panel discussions and today’s keynote with
@strombone1
… feeling blessed to be part of

Thanks everyone for kind words, prayers and pictures of your beautiful dogs. They filled my heart. Sadly it is broken now, my boy Cody passed away this morning. The fight was too much. He was the best dog, a gentle soul with a beautiful smile. He will he missed and remembered.
So my beer league just doubled down on continuing to play after Hockey Canada and ASHL leagues shut down. My team already agreed we won’t risk contributing to spread by playing but genuinely curious how others feel? Am I overreacting by pushing us not to play? 🤔
DeSmith’s Canucks-coloured gear was already at NHL offices in Toronto awaiting inspection earlier this week, should be arriving any day now … freshly painted mask isn’t far behind
Zack MacEwen + Loui Eriksson among 7 Canucks players working late and for 1st time Jayce Hawryluk is not, so increasingly likely he could make season debut … Holtby still out here with Ian Clark so Demko is starter
Arturs Silovs out early with Ian Clark and working diligently on post-play alignment after getting caught a few times too steep in his Reverse in Game 1, which left him stuck and with no chance/no real push even on 1st PPG
Travis Green saying they had to bring crew out after to fix hole peg goes into confirms this was result of a net that wasn’t on properly + couldn’t handle routine RVH lean, but by all means keep insisting it was on-purpose push + not a move Demko makes 50X a game without issue 🙄
Only way that net comes off with what a move that every goalie makes a dozen times a period is of that peg wasn’t in properly in the first place, possibly from earlier contact
If you’re a goalie, you’re gonna love this interview with Thatcher Demko … might be the most in-depth we’ve done when it comes to technique (and that’s saying a LOT) … and if you’re just a Canucks fan, lots in here for you too
Thatcher Demko headlines new InGoal Radio Podcast presented by
@THSgoal
including a deep dive on his evolution under Ian Clark (+ why he went to bat so publicly for his return), evolving mindset (+ how Braden Holtby helped), Olympic goals + so much more:
Checking on Jacob Markstrom’s updated

@csahockey
after record-setting, 49-save shutout on Sedin night: leads NHL with +22.06 goal differential (ie. how many he’s saved Canucks based on quality and number of shots), ahead of Rask (15.22), Lehner (14.06) and Hellebuyck (13.76)
Just like old times … Electric in here as Canucks skate out to U2 … been far too long but nice to be back at Rogers Arena watching big stakes hockey again
Not arguing Markstrom was good vs Oilers but
@csahockey
had him at -4.53 goals relative to expected in BOA and -3.05 of that came in Game 1. You expect more from a $6M Vezina finalist for sure, but Flames giving up 19.47 expected goals in 5 games is a part of this discussion
Damn, now that is a stolen win for Braden Holtby last night for the Canucks against a Leafs team that generated almost 6 expected goals and had a whopping 13 high% chances on net
Frederik Andersen observed Navy SEALs to learn the mental tools and training used to survive Hell Week, and adjusted his practices in Maple Leafs crease, all to train himself to feel comfortable in uncomfortable, high-stress situations in 🥅
Only smelt it twice myself but it was unmistakable, and for NHL goaltenders that distinct scent of burning rubber left behind by hard-shot pucks, like a car doing a burnout, has become increasingly common:
Last night was 1st time felt optimistic Ian Clark would be back; not done yet but if Canucks get this across finish line as expected they deserve credit for being progressive in approach + aggressive (if belatedly) right up to ownership. I’ll be on
@Sportsnet650
at 1:30 with more
That’s a confident declaration from Jim Benning on the Ian Clark front on
@DonnieandDhali
.
I’d heard, as I’ve said, that the
#Canucks
were going to come hard this week, but I was skeptical about a settlement. Would be a a welcome development for Thatcher Demko, in particular.
Only way that net comes off with what a move that every goalie makes a dozen times a period is of that peg wasn’t in properly in the first place, possibly from earlier contact
Vegas G coach Dave Prior: "I am looking for people who have demonstrated the courage to wait out situations longer … that can get over the discomfort of when a shooter gets in so close you start to lose time to react + it’s unsettling + you want to back off”
Marc-Andre Fleury:
Color of Elias Pettersson’s stick changed Nov. 21, said today was him going back to old 82 flex + length after starting season with stiffer, longer stick, result of batch this summer feeling “way softer” … I thought I got a lot stronger in the summer but the sticks tricked me."
Big night tomorrow for Hughes family as Luke, Jack and Quinn play in same "organized hockey" game for the first time ever, realizing a NHL dream first discussed as "kids playing mini sticks" in the basement ...

@NHLdotcom
:
Good for Jaroslav Halak, hasn’t been an easy season not playing nearly as much as he’s used to or expected coming in, but the veteran dug in and showed tonight why he’s been one of top NHL 1B options for a long time
With so many people reaching out to the family after our friend
@kenwardskorner
shared his leukemia diagnosis last night and asking how they could help, his sister, Alyson, has started a Go-Fund Me to support Joey and his young family in this fight:
Props and thanks to
@goaliesonly
for transitioning their factory and staff to help make medical gowns for front line EMS personnel battling coronavirus. Story on the switch:
NHL dot com playoff breakdown noted Grubauer’s tendency to turn glove over top of pad as he sets up + it proved costly on 2 biggest goals last night. Scouting report on every goalie is on site; rest of Caps-Blue Jackets here:
Canadians + Canucks fans should be equally proud to have this young man represent them. We analyze the crap out of goalie technique between the pipes but what goes on between the ears is even more important and DiPietro showed just how strong he is in both regards during this WJC
Seems like a good time to point out that Demko came into this game having climbed 7th in the NHL in goals-saved above expected per
@csahockey
at 10.01 … may have gone up a couple in that period alone, 3 unreal stops already
I woulda ranked Predators goalie tandem near top NHL going into season, so with Canucks in Nashville and all 32 teams playing, here's the current top-5 by goals saved above expected from
@csahockey
1. Arizona 7.99
2. Chicago 6.6
3. St. Louis 6.48
4. Vegas 6.46
5. Vancouver 6.28
To surprise of no one who knows him, Jack Campbell was one of first players on the ice for the morning skate with Bakersfield, his first work day back in AHL … also first goalie off the ice so appears could be starting for Condors vs Abbotsford Canucks tonight
Forgot to mention, before game 1,000 tonight, Luongo stopped 45/46 in back end of back-to-back starts playing thru rib injury on Tuesday, needed IV fluids after game, and turned 39 on Wednesday. A glimpse into what it takes to reach a milestone of that magnitude.
Interesting quote about Canucks from new Wild coach John Hynes after the 2-0 loss: “They're one of the top teams, I think number one, in rebound chances, and I thought our net front coverage was really strong."
Arturs Silovs out early with Ian Clark and working diligently on post-play alignment after getting caught a few times too steep in his Reverse in Game 1, which left him stuck and with no chance/no real push even on 1st PPG
Spencer Martin looks like Canucks starter after taking shots from only 3 Canucks on ice -- Stillman, Lockwood + Juulsen -- and doing few drills with G coach Ian Clark ... Interesting to see GM Patrik Allvin pull Lockwood aside for quick chat as came off ice. Roster move coming?
Further to last night, Mike spotted net being knocked off earlier by Vegas forward and officials putting it back on rather than rink crew … so essentially the referee made a brutal call on a net that came off because his group didn’t put it back on right in first place 🙄
It's ana absolute joke Thatcher Demko got called for delay of game last night. He went into RVH and the net popped off.
Why?
Keegan Kolesar knocked the net off not long before. The officials didn't put the net back on properly. Pegs not all the way in due to snow. (1
Quick thank you to everyone for the kind words, publicly and privately, about my daughter’s painting. We’ve been blown away by the response and it means a lot, not just to this very proud parent, but more importantly to the confidence of a young artist 🙏
When your teenage daughter is also a budding artist and totally gets your goalie vibe, you get the best Christmas gift ever! 😊 (and yes, cause some of you will point it out, that is a 28, she misread 29 in photo on the book on my dresser, and I couldn’t care less)
Dad lit the fuse on a life-long passion for cars in me and (doubly so) my brother, so on 1 year anniversary of his passing, can’t think of better way to spend a beautiful evening than a cruise and coffee with my brother in a couple bucket list rides dad inspired 🙏

True love is someone who will drive half an hour to bring the stinky goalie glove you left on drying rack to your Saturday night beer league game after 20 years of marriage 🙏

Friendly reminder after hearing “Henrik doesn’t have it anymore” thrown around amid Rangers G news this morning: Lundqvist was 7th in NHL with +8.96 goal differential + 8th with a SV% 1.03 above expected before they went to the 3-goalie rotation on Jan. 7 (

Best guess on why Freddie Andersen was upset is high shot before goal damaged cage on mask; check out how bent it is in front of eyes in left photo as he argues; then switches masks (2nd pic). Never get that call but it’s dangerous bent like that.
Appears tonight’s start for Braden Holtby will be after his longest gap (18 days) between games since becoming a full-time NHLer in 2013. Closest before this was in 2013-14: a 16-day gap after Capitals acquired Jaro Halak and 14 days around Christmas …
Happy to be back at rink for Canucks-Leafs + happier to finally do it repping

Serious WTF do you want me to do energy here … and don’t blame him … that’s frankly a terrible call and shows little awareness of how goalies play and what nets should hold, sorry 🤷♂️
