@jonykipnis @hubermanlab @NIH They can slash admin costs from the current 26% cap to 15%, but the rest still goes to facilities. In the future direct costs will just have to cover facilities, adding more work for PIs. Plus, smaller places could be wiped out by the sudden, arbitrary funding cut.

Awesome work from @nspruston et al! We knew the hippocampus builds cognitive maps but not how. By tracking tons of neurons for weeks they found that neurons gradually sort similar experiences into distinct task maps, capturing hidden structure beyond sensory input
I’m excited about this highly collaborative project by @sunw37, @JohanWinn, and many other talented contributors. Read more about how our @HHMIJanelia team imaged thousands of neurons in mouse hippocampus as mice learned cognitive tasks over several days:

Sad... and we, NIH-funded scientists, must also reckon with our failure that public support for science isn't where we thought it was. We need to make better case for how foundational research drives breakthroughs. #ScienceMatters #NIH
As outcry builds over Trump cuts to NIH payments, drugmakers are MIA On last night's earnings call, $VRTX CEO Reshma Kewalramani said nothing about the NIH, yet Vertex owes some of that $11B in cystic fibrosis drug sales to foundational biomedical research funded by NIH. She's not alone.. The silence from biotech and pharma CEOs — $AMGN $LLY $REGN $GILD — is (to use a cliché) deafening.

Congress's appropriations and federal court orders are ignored, so what's left of the rule of law?
1. BREAKING The Trump administration is maintaining a funding freeze at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in defiance of two federal court orders. The ongoing freeze was confirmed by an NIH official and internal correspondence reviewed by Popular Information. 🧵

In case you are not yet an expert on NIH indirect costs. check out this @AAMC infographic breaking down the *research expenses* not covered by NIH direct costs

@SuryaGanguli @hubermanlab @NIH Good, have a public discussion on this: we need a balanced research portfolio. And breakthroughs tend to come from left-field, eg SMA therapies came from decades of RNA biology, not a narrow, disease-specific focus.

@emilyakopp @ryangrim @VPrasadMDMPH NIH reporter will show you all projects with direct & indirect costs. F&A rates are negotiated with the govt to simplify budgeting and my understanding is that they are based on *actual* costs based on prev years like building maintenance, utilities & admin expenses

@emilyakopp @ryangrim @VPrasadMDMPH one more thing: for instance WashU gets lots of fed funds at a negotiated F&A rate of 55.5% but the effective rate for NIH grants is only ~27% (check NIH Reporter), which seems low

@emilyakopp @ryangrim @VPrasadMDMPH This is all public info, look it up instead of relying on a tweet. Indirects cover all research costs beyond supplies/salaries: buildings, electricity, etc, incl admin (capped at 26%). Unis already add funds to cover full costs. Cutting indirects will hurt research!

@HawleyMO @Eric_Schmitt Missouri receives $1.42 billion in NIH funding, supporting 30,000+ jobs. The NIH cut would mean the loss of hundreds of millions and countless jobs - not efficiency, but devastation for research, healthcare & economy. @washumedicine #ResearchMatters

Incredible breakthrough from @JswLab! Nice to take a break from worrying about science funding and celebrate science:

@TonyZador of course, because nothing says "efficient" like 50 separate bureaucracies independently reinventing the wheel 🚀
