#OTD 1903 Randall Davidson is enthroned as Archbishop of #Canterbury. He resigned in 1928 after Prayer Book revision failed to pass the House of Commons, and became the first Archbishop of Canterbury to resign and not to die in office.

#OTD 1853 Edward Smith, aged 61, of Cock Lane, Westgate, #Canterbury, in the employ of Mr. Soutbee, attended at the Hospital for admission as an in-patient, and while waiting in the hall fell off his seat, and, although got up and immediately attended to, was a corpse.

#OTD 1950 #Rochester firm Blaw Knox are shipping two road graders, the first of a full order book, to Venezuala this week. Until now, America have held a monopoly on such machines, but Blaw Knox have won orders worldwide for their machine, rated the world's best.

#OTD 1931 The 'Troc' Cinema opens in #Tankerton next to the Marine Hotel, showing The Dawn Patrol. It was originally built as a skating rink, which was unsuccessful. Undergoing much modification under multiple owners it ceased to be a cinema in 1951, and was demolished in 1996.

#OTD 1957 Maidstone and District Motor Services were asked for a certain bus to be met on arrival. An elderly lady had posted a letter in the used ticket box, thinking it was a post box. It came to light when she told relatives how she had been saved a walk to the post office.

#OTD 1969 Canterbury & Whitstable loco 'Invicta' is moved from the Riding Gate to the Dane John to make way for the #Canterbury ring road. Invicta went into service in 1830, and went into storage in 1839, becoming the first locomotive in the world to be preserved.

#OTD 1970 Manning the reservation telephone at Maddieson's holiday camp at #Littlestone, the manager was unable to use one of the office lines. It was reported, and ten minutes later, still unable to make or receive calls, he was able to listen to Derek Nimmo in Oh Brother!

#OTD 1962 Work started on #Whitstable's ten-pin bowling centre in Beach Walk by developers Westmont Ltd. Total cost will be £70,000 amnd it will be open for play in mid-August. The building will have a cafe and snack bar, and a licenced club room and bar for members.

#OTD 1899 Many of the shops and other business premises in #Canterbury were lit up by the electric light for a short time. The light burns steady and very brilliant, and customers are quite satisfied with it. The formal opening ceremony of the Works will take place on the 24th.

#OTD 1961 There are more restaurants and cafes in the tourist city of #Canterbury than there are any other type of food shop, discloses a council report. Restaurants number 96 against grocers (92), public houses (81) and sweet shops (38).

#OTD 1961 A Royal Navy bomb disposal squad from Portsmouth, aided by floodlights, spent all night searching for a mine reported washed up on the shore near Shakespeare Halt, between #Dover and the Warren. But when they found the "mine" it turned out to be a bucket off a dredger.
