Our hearts are broken for our brothers and sisters of the Kalamazoo County Sheriff's Office. Deputy Ryan Proxmire succumbed to his injuries after being shot during a vehicle pursuit. Please keep Deputy Proxmire, his family, and his law enforcement family in your prayers.
Some dashcam video from one of our cruisers who was eastbound 14 Mile on Wednesday when a semi truck was thrown into his lane. Good illustration of how quick things happen when conditions are bad. Keep your eyes on the road and drive safely!
KCSO Sheriff LaJoye-Young addresses the media regarding an active investigation on 19 mile Road. We can confirm 4 casualties however we do not believe there is an active threat to community safety.
The Kent County Emergency Management has activated an Emergency Operations Center at the KCSO. Alpine, Plainfield, & Grand Rapids Townships are appearing to be the hardest hit. This account will be providing official updates.

Today marks the first day of School Bus Safety Week. The KCSO Traffic Safety Unit & Road Patrol deputies will be out participating in Operation Safe Stop which runs through Friday. Please slow down and watch out for school buses as you are out and about.

Be aware: 2 reports today of a phone scam in which caller poses as a utility company rep who tells resident they are behind on payments. Caller states power will be shut off if not paid immediately and instructs resident to pay with prepaid gift cards. Spread the word!
KCSO is assisting Sparta Police in the area of Donna & Clark St looking for a suspect who ran from a traffic stop. KCSO is coordinating with Sparta Schools and will keep them updated. There is not a specific threat to the public, but there is a large police presence.

It's a common practice for most but some people don't know that there is a NEW law (relatively) that requires motorists to stop at a dark traffic light. It has long been taught to new drivers but it was never mandated until last summer. Drive safely!

KCSO is on scene of a shooting incident at East Kentwood High School. One person confirmed to have been shot. The suspect is outstanding at this time. PIO 35 minutes out and will provide and update with the district after arrival.

At 6:30 PM today, KCSO was assisting Wyoming Public Safety during an arrest near Eastern Ave & 32nd St. A KCSO officer was struck by a vehicle during the incident and was taken to the hospital. Our officer was evaluated and is expected to be released. Further updates tomorrow.
