Black Americans have played a vital role in shaping modern medicine, breaking barriers and advancing healthcare for all. From Dr. Rebecca Lee Crumpler, the first Black woman physician in the U.S., to Dr. Daniel Hale Williams, a pioneer in open-heart surgery, their contributions have helped shape the medical landscape we are all a part of today.   At Kelsey-Seybold Clinic, we recognize that the care we provide has been influenced by generations of Black medical trailblazers who committed their lives to improving health outcomes. This Black History Month, we celebrate their impact and remain dedicated to advancing inclusive, high-quality healthcare for all. #kelseyseyboldclinic #blackhistorymonth

🩺 Dry eyes can make everyday activities like reading, working on a computer, or even driving, uncomfortable and frustrating. While occasional irritation might be caused by allergies or environmental factors, persistent symptoms may indicate a more serious issue. Knowing what to look for may help you take steps toward relief. Some common symptoms of dry eyes may include:   ⬜️ Dryness or Irritation: This will be especially noticeable after extended screen time or in dry, windy environments. ⬜️ Gritty Feeling: Many people describe this as the sensation of having sand in their eyes. ⬜️ Redness or Blurry Vision: These symptoms will often worsen throughout the day and may interfere with your ability to focus. ⬜️ Excessive Tearing: Ironically, your eyes may produce more tears to compensate for the dryness, leading to a cycle of irritation.   “Dry eyes are manageable with the right care,” says Dr. Brittney Jimenez, an optometrist at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “We can help identify the cause and recommend treatments, including artificial tears, medications, or lifestyle adjustments tailored to your needs.”   👁️ Don’t wait to find relief. Schedule your eye care appointment today and take the first step toward clearer, more comfortable vision.

It typically begins in the 40s and can bring physical and emotional changes that may feel unpredictable or challenging. Whether you’re experiencing these changes yourself or supporting someone who is, understanding the common symptoms may help you navigate this phase with grace and kindness:  ⬜️ Irregular Periods: Menstrual cycles may become less predictable, with changes in timing, flow, or duration.  ⬜️ Hot Flashes or Night Sweats: Sudden temperature changes may happen during the day or disrupt sleep at night.  ⬜️ Mood Swings or Memory Challenges: Hormonal fluctuations may lead to emotional highs and lows or occasional forgetfulness.  ⬜️ Sleep Disturbances: Trouble falling or staying asleep is common during this phase.  “Perimenopause may bring challenges, but there are effective ways to manage symptoms,” says Dr. Adrienne LeGendre, an OB/GYN at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Your healthcare provider may offer personalized recommendations, including lifestyle adjustments, medications, or hormone therapy, to help manage symptoms and improve quality of life.”  If you or someone you care about is noticing changes that may be linked to perimenopause, an appointment with an OB/GYN is the place to start. ✨ Starting a new workout routine is a fantastic way to prioritize your health, but taking a smart approach can help prevent injuries and keep you on track, especially if it’s been a while since you lifted weights or went jogging. Here’s how to exercise safely:  ⬜️ Expert Planning: Going from a sedentary lifestyle to an active one is a huge change – one that you should discuss with your doctor. Connect with your trusted medical provider and ask if you are healthy enough for the activities you have planned.   ⬜️ Warm Up: Start each session with stretches or light aerobics to prepare your muscles and improve flexibility. While it might feel like you could be doing more with your time in gym clothes, avoiding and reducing the aches, pains, and injuries that may accompany exercise is worth it.  ⬜️ Take It Slow: Gradually increase the intensity of your workouts, whether adding weight, increasing speed, or extending time. Striking a balance between progress and overexertion is key. Feeling tired is okay; feeling pain isn’t.  ⬜️ Focus on Form: Proper technique protects your joints and maximizes results. If you’re unsure, work with a trainer to make sure your form is correct. When adding in weights, start with machines instead of free weights, since free weights have an increase injury risk.  ⬜️ Cool Down: as important it is to warm up it is also important to cool down. stretching after training can be helpful to prevent injuries.  ⬜️ Include Rest Days: Recovery is essential for progress. Rest days help prevent overuse injuries and keep you motivated. If you want to make sure you’re doing something every day, plan ahead and create a schedule that alternates activities.    “Consistency and care are the keys to a successful fitness journey,” says Dr. Walter Alomar, a Sports Medicine physician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Listening to your body and taking these precautions may help protect you from injury and keep you on track.”  Have questions about starting your fitness journey safely? 🩺 Bath time is an important part of your child’s routine, but a few simple precautions may help make this fun moment in your child’s day safe, too. Here are three tips to keep in mind:    ⬜️ Stay Close: Always stay within arm’s reach of your child while they’re in the tub. Even stepping away briefly, like to grab a towel, may be risky. If you need to leave, take your child with you. Creating a bath time routine that includes gathering everything you need beforehand may help make things easier and safer.  ⬜️ Check Water Temperature: Use your elbow (which is more sensitive to temperature changes than your hand) or a thermometer to test the water. It should feel warm, not hot; around 100°F is a good guideline. To help prevent accidental scalding, set your water heater to 120°F or lower.  ⬜️ Use Non-Slip Mats: Slips and falls are common when water splashes around the tub. Place a non-slip mat inside the tub and another outside to reduce the risk of accidents. Keeping the area around the tub dry is another simple way to help prevent falls.    “Bath time is a great opportunity to connect with your child while caring for them,” says Dr. Jennifer Lai, a pediatrician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “With a little preparation, bath time can be safe and fun for both you and your child.”    👉 Time for your child’s next checkup? Cases of cervical cancer have declined significantly over the past decade. Since 1999, the annual rate of new cases of cervical cancer in the United States has dropped from 9.7 to 7.4 per 100,000 women, according to the CDC. Today, it is considered one of the most preventable cancers, thanks to increased awareness, improved screenings, and proactive measures. Preventive measures and screenings are the most important ways we impact change on cervical cancer cases:   ⬜️ The HPV Vaccine: Human papillomavirus (HPV) is the leading cause of cervical cancer. This virus is sexually transmitted and extremely common among unvaccinated individuals. Fortunately, the HPV vaccine is highly effective in preventing the virus strains most often linked to cervical cancer. The vaccine is recommended for everyone starting at age 11 or 12. Adults up to age 26 may also receive the vaccine if they haven’t already. Adults aged 27 – 45 may also benefit from receiving the vaccine and may discuss with their primary care providers whether receiving the vaccine can offer protection.  ⬜️ Routine Screenings: Pap tests may detect abnormal cells in the cervix that may develop into cancer, while HPV screenings identify the virus itself. Early detection allows for early treatment and may even prevent cancer from developing. Talk to your OB/GYN about how often you should be screened based on your age, health history, and risk factors.  Adopting healthy habits may also support cervical health. Quitting smoking, maintaining a balanced diet, and practicing safe sex are additional steps that may reduce the risk of cervical cancer.  “Vaccines and screenings are essential for reducing the risk of cervical cancer,” says Dr. Michael Leung, an OB/GYN at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “Taking these steps now may have a lasting impact on your health.”

✨ A new year is a great time to focus on your health and make the kind of changes that can lead to lasting improvements. Consistent efforts, even small ones, may have a big impact over time. Here are three ways to kick-start your health journey:   ⬜️ Schedule Preventive Care: Start the year by scheduling your annual checkups and screenings. Regular appointments may help catch potential issues early and allow your provider to create a personalized health plan. Don’t have a primary care physician (PCP)? Now is the perfect time to find one and schedule your Master’s Appointment to start the year strong.   ⬜️ Stay Active: Regular movement, whether at the gym or worked into your daily routine, may improve your energy, mood, and overall health. Find activities you enjoy and focus on consistency to create lasting results. Sustainable habits are more effective than quick wins.   ⬜️ Eat Mindfully: Healthy eating doesn’t need to be complicated. Start by adding more fruits, vegetables, and whole grains to your meals. Aim to fill half your plate with these nutrient-rich foods to make healthy eating easy and satisfying.   “Small, consistent changes may make a big difference over time,” says Dr. Anna Calara, an Internal Medicine physician at Kelsey-Seybold Clinic. “It’s for this reason I encourage anyone beginning a new health-focused regimen to speak with their doctor about their plans. Your doctor is your best partner to help ensure that your plans for health are safe – and that they’ll be effective”   👉 Start your health journey today! Schedule an appointment now!
