"We leave football, football never leaves us." Two years later. Same teams. And another Super Bowl. I love football - Memories of nights spent running pass routes while the smoke from my breath blasts into the early evening sky. Nights at Bud's Tavern watching Monday Night Football, eating cheeseburgers, and drinking fountain Coke. Learning about teamwork, sacrifice, and the forever importance of the fullback. But, I struggle with the game too. It's violence. The collisions. The brain-rattling and bone-snapping hits. The families left to suffer in it's destructive - but oh so seductive - wake. Once again, I'll watch on Sunday. Unable to separate the honey-dipped, nostalgia I have for the game and a father I adored from the pain and suffering I know it can cause. Spent Saturday writing & talking about my upcoming Hoops book. Watched college ball and Cooper Flagg roll. Then woke up to Luka on the Lakers and LeBron finding out at dinner. Damn, basketball is awesome fun.
