Talent pool is undeniably wider. The 1,000th, 2,000th and 5,000th best players in the world are much better than their counterparts from 10, 20 and 40 years ago. But there are only 450 players (plus 2-ways) in the NBA. Harder to improve the quality of the top 0.1 percent.

Among other things - one being second-round picks, especially when they land in the 30s, often yield good players - they are often the thing that pushes deals over the finish line. The more you have, the more doors you can open.
@Keith_Langlois Serious question…why is it so important to acquire so many 2nd round picks? People act like these picks are just as good as 1st round picks.
