Social media isn’t very social anymore. Lots of hate. Life’s too short and too precious for this. Love your family, love your neighbor and love God. Treat people the way you would like to be treated. Forgive them if they make a mistake and stop acting like you’ve never made any.
Baseball Coaches:
1. Love the game
2. Love your family more than you love the game
3. Love your players more than you love the game
4. Never stop learning how to improve as a coach, husband and father
5. Don’t ask your players to do something you aren’t willing to do
From the time I first arrived at UK in ‘78, Coach Hall treated me with kindness. He was generous, helpful and truthful in helping me get on my feet as a coach. When I raised money for lights at our field I needed $12,000 to finish the project. He “found” it for us.

It’s amazing…people who have never even played high school basketball are disagreeing with Rex Chapman on this hire. Come on, Kentucky fans, get behind Mark Pope and support him. Be a great fan here!
If Mark Pope is hired at Kentucky I just feel compelled to say that Mark is one of the best people you could ever know. Fierce competitor. Man of character and integrity. Someone you feel comfortable sending your son to play for. A GREAT player. Better coach.
For those of you who are actually criticizing Coach Cal for teaching his players servant leadership through washing children’s feet and giving them shoes to wear, when was the last time you served and gave (at the same time) to a needy child?
For those of you who haven’t noticed,
@UKBaseball
has pounded the Ole Miss Rebels in Oxford this weekend. If they hold on to the 15-1 lead today, they will have swept the Rebs and the Cats will be 24-4 overall and 8-1 in the S.E.C. Impressive!

My first and only post about the mask wearing controversy. Even if you believe it doesn’t help, wear a mask. If wearing a mask causes your fellow man to feel safe and more secure, wear it. What’s the harm in helping someone else feel safer?
I just want to go on record with all baseball fans...back in the day when I was struggling on the mound with my control, if dozens of fans were yelling, “throw strikes,” it helped a lot. And, if my coaches yelled “throw strikes,” I would quickly resemble Greg Maddux.

Coach of the Year 🏆
Mingione has led
@UKBaseball
to Omaha for the program’s FIRST time while also winning a share of the difficult SEC’s regular season title.
This time last year my wife, Sharon, was beginning radiation treatments for cancer and received treatments throughout the beginning of the pandemic. Less than two weeks ago, she was released from the hospital after 13 days for Covid-pneumonia. So thankful she’s recovering well.
Lots of Derby talk, but I’m super excited about
@UKBaseball
winning the first two games against
#1
Tennessee! Cats very competitive against a team who hasn’t lost an
@SECbaseball
series…until today. Now let’s go for a sweep!
So proud of this
@UKBaseball
team. They were down 7-0 at Auburn and now they are up 12-7 in the top of the 8th. These guys are confident and will be 14-1 in the SEC if they hang on.

Nick Mingione loved the fan turnout at Kentucky Proud Park this weekend.
“I just want to thank all of our fans. What an atmosphere, huh? I mean, this is awesome…”
Some of the A.D’s who recently voted against paying and giving benefits to a third assistant for baseball have, in recent years, added assistant athletic directors to make their jobs easier. For the A.D.’s who supported a paid 3rd assistant, thank you! For those who didn’t...👇🏽
This video speaks volumes. He gave his all on the field. Who can forget his effort in the legendary Arkansas game.
I was always trying to get him to pitch with that big left arm of his. He jokingly told me he gave up baseball because they didn’t have helmets big enough for him.
Tommy Lasorda loved the
@Dodgers
and loved baseball. He flew in to Lexington twice to help me raise support for stadium improvements for
@UKBaseball
. He paid his own way from L.A. He was an incredible ambassador for baseball and was a true friend of college baseball. RIP, Tommy.
It’s a free country. No one is forcing anyone to eat at Chik-Fil-A. No one is forcing you to refrain from your anti-Christian bias. The employees are nice at Chic-Fil-A, so it may not work in NY anyway. Thank you. My pleasure.
Our fans have been awesome. They waited through an hour and half rain delay, but they are here to see
@UKBaseball
win a regional championship! If you can’t be here, join me and
@Darren_Headrick
at 7:30 on the Kentucky Sports Network!
Forty years ago, in June of ‘78, Cliff Hagan gave me an opportunity to coach the
@UKBaseball
team. After my interview, I remember thinking, “I may not get the job, but at least I met the legendary Cliff Hagan.”
We miss you, “Hook.” This is an anniversary that always makes my heart heavy. Jonathan Hooker and his bride, Scarlet, went down in a fatal airplane crash as they were leaving for their honeymoon. Outstanding pitcher, great teammate and a true Wildcat.
I have a new proposal for the
@ncaa
: Athletic Directors should be limited to two paid assistants and one volunteer. If it works well for baseball, it should work well for athletic departments. (Again, thanks to the many A.D.’s who Voted for a third paid assistant.)
If all of us who say “thoughts and prayers” actually pray, our nation would see enormous, positive change. We need to pray for:
1. Change within our own hearts (Psalm 51:10)
2. Our leaders (1 Timothy 2:2)
3. Our children (Matthew 19:14)
Real change comes through real prayers.
I’m watching a youth league baseball game There’s a kid playing who struggles throwing, catching and hitting. He has no confidence because it’s obvious his dad hasn’t spent time helping him. His dad is the loudest in the ballpark and constantly berates his kid. Heartbreaking.
How many assistant athletic directors do these
@bigten
AD’s have on their staff? They should be limited to two paid assistant AD’s and one volunteer for each athletic department.
At a time when media distributions have soared and the game continues to grow...Big Ten ADs vote 13-1 against adding another coach? This is embarrassing. The lowest coach/player ratio in major college athletics and they vote to keep it that way...
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.”
John 3:16-17
Happy Birthday to Doug Flynn. He was once one heckuva player. He’s not on Twitter anymore, so wanted to share this pic. He didn’t run that well and his bat was suspect, but he did have good hands...especially at the dinner table.
I’m amazed at how some fans (and some journalists) turn on our basketball team and individual players. Disappointment is one thing, but bashing is tiresome. The definition of passion is not negativity. Most people doing this hates bullying, but yet use Twitter to do the same.
Fun hanging out with mentor and former boss,
@CoachRonPolk
before today’s baseball game. Ron is a friend and a true legend. The
@UKBaseball
team has won their first two conference games of the season against the Bulldogs.
So proud of former
@UKBaseball
star Eddie Brooks. It’s been about 30 years since he attended UK. After all these years he’s well on his way to graduating. He took 15 hrs last semester and earned a 4.0 GPA! Two more classes and he will graduate. Atta boy
@BooShawn22
I usually don’t boast, but I’ve never listened to a Lavar Ball interview, and I’ve never watched the Golden Globes or a reality tv show. So, that makes me less hip but much smarter, right?
My prayer is that everyone who reads all the Martin Luther King quotes today will live them tomorrow. The hate and disrespect needs to stop. “Why do you look at the speck of sawdust in your brother’s eye and pay no attention to the plank in your own eye?” (Jesus-Matthew 7:3)
Congrats to the
@UKBaseball
team on winning their 1st game in the
@SECbaseball
tourney! Sean Harney pitched a gem and Tyler Guilfoil got the win. Tough to beat an outstanding team like
#19
Auburn 3 times in less than a week. Proud of
@Coach_Mingione
, staff and team!
I’ve known Jeff and Stacey Sheppard since their college days, so it’s been a blast to watch their son Reed play. Something that isn’t talked about enough is his ability to move the ball down the court with lightning speed with the strongest two handed chest pass I’ve seen.
This was the scene at Kentucky Proud Park during the NCAA Regionals. Congrats to
@UKBaseball
@Coach_Mingione
, his staff and the players for winning the Lexington Regional!

RIP, Coach Sutton. While at Kentucky, occasionally he would call me and say, “Let’s meet in the equipment room and talk Baseball.” We also shared lunches with Happy Chandler,
@wildcatnews
and many others. He was the first to donate money for the Cliff Hagan Stadium renovation.
My heart is broken for the Jordan family and for all those who love him, including Ben’s
@UKBaseball
teammates and coaches. Rest In Peace Big Ben.

Talking will not give you confidence. Confidence is earned by...
1. Being receptive to constructive criticism (being coachable)
2. Being relentless in the pursuit of knowledge and excellence
3. Outworking your opponent during practice
4. Competing in both games and practice
Last game at

today at 3:00. This weekend has been very nostalgic, so I had to roll out my Little League glove (top), my high school glove (middle) and the glove I through batting practice with durin my last years as a coach
@UKBaseball
. Many awesome memories.
@UKBaseball
is off to a great start (8-1). They will be playing perennial college baseball power TCU in a three game series this weekend, starting Friday (4:00). Should be a fun series! You can watch big time college baseball in a phenomenal stadium. See you @ KPP!
There are some friends who stick by you through thick and thin. Oscar Combs is one of those.
@wildcatnews
helped me tremendously as a young coach. He’s a member of the Kentucky Journalism Hall of Fame and has too many accolades to mention on Twitter. Thanks for all you have done!
Enjoyed doing
@UKBaseball
home games, NCAA Regional, Super Regional and the College World Series with
@Darren_Headrick
this past season. Thanks to
@Coach_Mingione
, his staff and the players for giving us some great memories!

Texas Tech! Power, Pitching, offensive execution, Defense...this team is fun to watch.
As a player, if one of your teammates is playing very well and receiving a lot of praise, be happy for him. Encourage him! “The rising tide lifts all boats.” This is part of being a great teammate.
Memories from

Troy Trumbo from Danville, KY. Troy helped lead
@UKBaseball
to the NCAA Regionals in ‘93. He was projected to go early in the
@mlb
draft, but passed away at the UK Medical Center with his parents, Pastor and coach with him. A great young man/competitor.
For all coaches who call pitches...
The wrong pitch thrown with confidence is better than the “right” pitch thrown with little or no confidence. A plan only works if you believe in the pitcher executing the plan and your pitcher believes in you.

So very proud of Coach Jan Weisberg and the job he’s done as head baseball coach at Birmingham-Southern. To be able to keep his players focused on the present during a painful time in their lives is a tribute to his leadership and the compassion he has for his players. Winners!
BIRMINGHAM SOUTHERN TO THE D3 WORLD SERIES 🔥🔥🔥
Their school is closing down May 31st so they will be representing a school that no longer exists. Crazy stuff
A rolling stone gathers no moss, but a lost baseball is a different story. These balls were lost in a grown up fence row that I had cleaned out last week. One tree had grown around a ball. These balls brought back great memories with my boys.

So proud of my mother. She’s 92 years young but still quilts. She spent long, Covid winter using her gift...working with her hands and creating useful, beautiful quilts. She’s a huge
@UKBasketbalI
fan (
@UKBaseball
fan too, of course). So thankful to be spending the day with her.
Happy Birthday to my friend and mentor, Ron Polk! He definitely has a special place on the “Mount Rushmore” of college baseball. Whether at UAB, the Cape, the Dominican Republic, the speaking circuit or as an author, he continues to make great contributions to the game he loves.
Really gonna miss my friend, Mike Pratt. Besides loving basketball, he also loved UK, baseball and telling stories about his Dayton boys, Mike Schmidt, Yeager and the rest. Rest in peace, Mike. You were a good friend to many. Now, you are a good friend to many more.
My first two years at UK, I was a part time coach making $8,000 per year.
@wildcatnews
took me to lunch at least once a week; not because he wanted to hang out with me, but because he knew I couldn’t afford to go out for lunch. Oscar is genuinely a good human being and a legend.
Been married to Sharon for 45 years. It’s a miracle. When I picked her up for our 1st date, I was listening to the Cats play basketball on the radio. Since I listened to the game instead of talking to her, it took two months to get my 2nd date. She’s all in now too.
@wildcatnews
Such a blessing and an honor to speak to the
@UKBaseball
team today. There are some outstanding young men on this team. The future is bright! (Home plate looks farther away each year! It used to look close!)

Excited to be helping call this game with my good friend,
@Darren_Headrick
! If you can’t watch and if you aren’t in Omaha, listen to us call the action. Darren is awesome. Game time 2:00 EST.
It’s interesting that a few people on Twitter will post something controversial and then respond to the angry replies as if they are shocked that it upset them. People, quit stirring things up. There’s enough anger out there already. Spread a little kindness and good will instead
Sights and sounds of a spring morning at the Madison homestead. Thirty-five years here and still thankful. “This is the day the Lord has made; Let us rejoice and be glad in it.” (Psalm 118:24)
One of my favorite things each week is getting together with these young
@UKBaseball
coaches to talk baseball, family and faith. Thanks,
@Coach_Mingione
, for making this opportunity available for me and for your staff.

A great man made it Home today. Jerry Kindall was a good friend, phenomenal role model, mentor and a fun guy to spend time with. He played baseball & basketball for Minnesota &
@MLB
for several teams. Most importantly, he was a man of faith and character. Omaha won’t be the same.
There’s been a lot of talk recently about how spanking causes children to become violent. Has there been a study concluding that the absence of discipline causes violence? I believe discipline without love causes violence. I also believe no discipline causes violence.
Since the mythical pitch count limit is 100, many pitchers begin checking out mentally at 90. If the mythical pitch count limit was 90, pitchers would begin tiring at 80. Some pitchers, if trained properly could go 120, some shouldn’t go more than 80. Every arm is different.
My sources in the bayou tell me that it looked like this the entire afternoon after NCAA officials postponed the
@UKBaseball
LSU Super Regional opener. Starting time now 8:06 PM. The future number one draft pick, Paul Skenes, will be a little tougher on the Cats under the lights.
“We’ve never had more people playing sports. We’ve never had more people quitting sports. Burnout is a serious problem for kids and parents. Baseball is not a year around sport.” John Smoltz, Hall of Famer, 21 yrs in MLB.
I’ve never met
@Oscartshiebwe34
but my heart breaks for him and for Mintz (who endured a horrible season last year and came back…and was relegated to 6th man this year). UK fans, say what you want, but those guys should honored.
Blaming others for the all of the negative issues in our country is the new sport of the 21st century. Blaming someone else gives people a sense of superiority. Taking action to improve the situation in your neighborhood takes real effort, and most would rather just blame others.
As a coach, it’s easy to believe in a player who listens, learns, works hard on and off the field and encourages their teammates. Those players earn confidence for themselves and they make it easier for their teammates and coaches to trust them and believe in them.

Snell needs more touches...
Conrad needs more touches..
Bowden needs more touches..
Rose needs more touches...
I’ve read all of this since last night’s game.
How can an OC make all the fans and media happy? He can’t! But, I’m glad so many people care.
