Churchill was a racist imperialist who also played a crucial role in defeating fascism in Europe, thereby paving the way for the eventual, albeit highly partial and erratic, reckoning with racism and imperialism in Europe. His legacy is complex. Colston's not so much.

The viciousness with which Mendoza et al have turned on Owen Jones helps explain why, after writing nuanced pieces in the early years of the Corbyn project, he largely abandoned asking questions post-2017: There was no room anymore in the movement for even modest critique. 1/

There's a lot of outrage at this letter but it's important to be clear about why it's so wrong: Irish, Jews and Travellers have historically been raciallised as non-white or racially inferior. 'Whiteness' is not static (and in any case many Jews and Travellers are dark skinned)

The Starmer-landlord incident is symptomatic of a peculiarly Labour problem: Even when it isn't in government, the party's 'supporters' often treat the party as if it is responsible for everything. The Labour Party itself becomes the primary site of political struggle.

All right I'll bite: Even if you assume that antisemitism is simply a reaction to things Jews do and believe - which, rest assured, I do not - no social phenomenon is simply 'reversible'. Racism has its own dynamic that persists beyond its origins...

This sounds to me like a justification for antisemitism, potentially even incitement. I mean I can't even begin... these are supposed leftists and anti-racists whose usual mantra is that racism is never justified...Apart from now obv.

We can now read the case against Lucy Letby's conviction. What strikes me is how difficult it is for non-experts - and a jury and solicitors in particular - to make head or tail of complex and disputed medical and statistical evidence.

As so often in UK under this govt, it's hard to tell whether the scenes at the Clapham vigil were the result of police incompetence on ground or deliberate calculation higher up. But maybe we've reached the point where incompetence and repression have become indistinguishable.

I really think that a bit more humility and thoughtfulness is called for amongst the factions of the Labour Party: The decline in 'heartland' support is a long-term trend and no one leader is wholly responsible or wholly absolved from blame.

If you aren't scared of Covid because you are in good health, fine. But you should be scared of appendicitis, an inexplicable lump, a broken leg or anything else that can happen with no warning and requires urgent treatment in a hospital with no spare capacity.

A provocation that illustrates how, among some western leftists, Palestinian struggle is treated as nationalism-that-is-not-nationalism. A binational state of Palestine would require the negation of Palestinian nationalism as well as Zionism if it were to work.

This is really vile and tells us something important about what has happened to the Jewish anti-Zionist left [Thread]

The Queen knows something that those brought up in a world of ubiquitous media don't: If you have the discipline to reveal nothing of yourself for decades, the smallest signs of an inner capacity for fun are incredibly powerful.

My son did great in his #GCSEResults2019 More than great in fact. But fuck you Michael Gove for what you put him through by making the system crueler, more joyless and harsh. He barely survived with his mental health intact.
