A mare who jumped round Aintree to place in a Grand National lost her life whilst having her first foal. There is an irony in that methinks. The antis say racing is cruel. Mother Nature is evidently crueler… Farewell Magic of Light. You were one of the special ones. RIP.

I am fed up of people criticising low grade racing, using class six as an insult & sneering at poor horses. We’re a breeding nation. Selling platers are a bi product of Derby winners. We have to provide opportunities for all. And a bit of respect wouldn’t go amiss either…

Rather than applaud Ryan Moore for giving his Golden Slipper winners’ watch to Shinzo’s groom, why not ask Longines why they didn’t give a watch to the winning groom in the first place? Or cost price cash equivalent? If these cogs in the wheel are as important as we say they are.

A plea to @itvracing Please mention breeders & breeding at Cheltenham this week. The studs, stud staff & pre trainers are every bit as much unsung heroes as the grooms you frequently & rightly applaud. Their formative work has made these horses as great as they are!

Jumps racing has become so tribal that you say things like “I love Bravemansgame” & you get snarked at. Okay, he’s not as good as Ireland’s best or a Cheltenham kind of horse. But he’s a fabulous athlete & tries so hard. You’d be ever so proud to watch him jump & say “he’s mine!”

Equinox is like Sea The Stars, lucky to have been beaten early in his career. With Frankel & Flightline, the narrative was all about them remaining unbeaten & look what happened to Baaeed! It’s more fun watching a horse run to enhance its legacy rather than keep it blemish free.

Colic is something all horse owners fear. Up & down the country, tiny ponies, elegant thoroughbreds & robust cobs will be diagnosed today. A shot of muscle relaxant will sort some, others might need surgery like Altior but for many there is no cure. Keep them all in your prayers.

If ITV racing can Zoom with owners after a race, why not with breeders & studs? It would be great to see Dark Angel were he to get another winner this week - even in his paddock covered with mud! Why not connect viewers with the origins of winning horses & bring bloodstock alive?

My favourite thought on Derby morning is that five future Epsom victors exist - one on a lorry to the races, one in a stable tacked up for work, one grazing with colt chums in a field, one geting up to foal high jinx & one a blob with a beating heart on a vet’s ultrasound screen.

Why don’t jumps fans care about racing in France? Four grade ones at Auteuil this weekend but barely a comment on here. If it had been four group ones at Longchamp, flat fans would have been all over them. It’s so odd given how important French horses now are to the sport here…

It’s sad to see people belittling Donjuan Triumphant. He’s a 6 year old entire who has been on the go since the June of his 2yo year. He’s won 17%, & been placed in 39%, of his races. That demonstrates toughness of body & mind. Moreover, he’s a Godolphin Arabian so a rare breed!

Lots of chat about Japan’s breeding programme. But little discussion as to how differently they nurture horses. Youngsters turned out in the Hokkaido snow. The best sold whilst foals at foot. Trainers’ strings limited in size. Horses kept at regulated training centres. What else?

British & Irish bloodstock has prioritised speed over stamina. Our middle distance flat horses are no longer the best in the world & our jumpers are routinely beaten in top races by French breds. It wouldn’t hurt as much if we had lots of good sprinters but we don’t. Urm…?!

In a polo yard somewhere in the world, there is a pony who is now broodmare sire of a G1 winner! Reckless Abandon was subfertile, gelded and retrained. Bless him …

Performance of the week? The mare in open company who took on the best of the British & beat the Irish as well! Sine Nomine lived my dream today - to own a filly to point, race & breed from … Hats off girl, connections should be rocking tonight & rightfully so! Go get them…

Why are Ascot adding incentives to get more American juveniles to the Royal Meeting? It’s not like any of the 2yo races are currently poorly contested! How’s about we try bulk up the fields for the middle distance & staying G1s? Some Japanese horses in the Gold Cup would be nice!

Paris is on box rest after a nasty paddock accident. It’ll be three weeks tomorrow & we’re nowhere near halfway. It breaks my heart to have her inside whilst the other horses enjoy the spring sunshine & lush new grass. But she’s putting on a brave face …

No, Waldkonig did not disappoint. He did not realise you’d extrapolated from a Wolverhampton maiden to world domination. Give these well connected debutant winners a break. They’re not all the next Frankel. With horses, a sense of perspective is always essential ...

Utterly delighted with Kaze Wo Atsumete (aka Petula) on debut at Carlisle today. She looked a picture, behaved impeccably & ran an encouraging fifth. Many thanks to @jardineracing & @andrewkmulleng1

What drives hype in racing & the belittling that comes with it? Why are horses from certain yards with particular owners written up? Whilst horses from other yards with different owners looked down upon? It’s all so predictable, often unpleasant & detracts from bigger issues..

Have we got to the bottom of the fireworks yet? Were they meant to go off post race? Were they sabotage? Were they proof that the authorities haven’t a clue? It was a fabulous Derby. But I’ll never forget the crime against animal welfare …

When the fun stops stop! There is no joy in racing under lights in sub zero temperatures. And even less, travelling horses to & from these meetings. This has been obvious all week. But we’ve persisted. Isn’t insanity doing the same thing over again & expecting different results?

Serious “covered ride” envy ... Is there a facility like this anywhere in Europe? Or anywhere else in the world outside Japan? Utterly extraordinary...

Utterly in awe of Kirsten Rausing & her encyclopaedic knowledge of the Lanwades families, as displayed on ITV just now. Genius is a word bandied around all to often, but she is one. Aren’t we lucky to have role models like her and Jim Bolger?

Poet’s Voice never stood for more than £12k & was available for just £6k when he died this year. He’s managed to sire 14 stakes winners though & many more placegetters. One of them is the mighty Poet’s Word of course. Think he deserves a wee bit more posthumous eulogy, don’t you?

At what point did it start being assumed that 12f G1 winners would go to stud as jumps stallions? Since when did Derby winners have to drop down in trip to burnish their credentials as flat sires? And who or what is responsible for the trend?

If anybody dares to say that was a “weak G1...” Two horses battling it out against the contours and the elements. Absolutely fabulous, what our racing is all about ... Hats off to Pyledriver and Al Aasy, stirring stuff!

Quite the perfect antidote to the sadness of today’s racing. Horses never cease to amaze. Can’t wait to see more of this blended family!

With two orphans I started to give up looking for foster mares for both as the likely hood was very slim. Last night we were offered a miracle mare, a Shire who lost her foal & had enough milk to feed both foals! Here is a quick video of the hard work & rewarding end! #HappyFoals

So Golden Horn is saved for the nation, what fabulous news?! It’s great to see new investors in stallions, keeping good prospects here & importing exciting new ones like Planteur. All we need to know now is where The Strad will end up?!

Canford Cliffs, potentially a great loss to the NH stallion ranks? Three winners & one second from just four runners since Christmas. 29% winners to runners over jumps per se. He’s now sunning himself in South Africa but perhaps he should be getting to know some Presenting mares?

Japan’s own pocket rocket, the adorable wee Memory Lane. I’d love to know how tall she is to the wither?! Weight wise, she’s 358kg so 120kg lighter than her half brother Titleholder going into the Arima Kinen & 164kg less than the heaviest runner Kiseki. Bless her …

When you consider how poorly Addeyebb was last autumn, spending a fortnight in equine hospital with a badly infected hock, it’s extraordinary he returned to the track let alone won another G2. He’s an extraordinary wee horse, one of racing’s survivors. Happy retirement old chap!
