@andrewchen
I think the lesson here is that kids need exposure to more jobs! I remember I wanted to be an astronaut. And then later a tv news anchor (90’s equivalent of a vlogger?). Its easy to only know what you see.
Seven years
@a16z
this week! Before I joined I thought I would go back to a startup in a year or two, but I've been so consistently blown away by the pace of learning and growth here. Lucky to be part of such a brilliant, curious and hardworking team 🦾
Fast co questionnaire with
@andre
- who is extraordinarily smart, talented and humble - just like the businessperson he says he most admires:
@jeff_jordan
Congrats to
@Grassadonia
for some well-deserved (and overdue) recognition for the incredible hit that
@CashApp
has become. Brian’s relentless pursuit drove the product from a hack week project (!) to one of the top apps in the U.S.
Bob Lee didn’t just smile, he beamed. He brought love, light and bear hugs. He was smart and principled. He was one of those people that worked hard and lived big! Everyone knew how much he loved his kids and the joy they brought him. ❤️
@crazybob
9 months in and it finally happened: my baby hit send on an e-mail before I was finished. It went to our entire leadership team, is missing the letter “y” and has no signature
I spent the last five years having children and like the suburban mom cliche that I am, I want to get fit by 40. What are your best tips for re-entry into exercise? I’m sure the science has updated since I last worked out?
Something I think companies are woefully underprepared for in their office reopening plans is making sure employees have sufficient time off to care for their sourdough starter
This is wild. Early in my time at Square I pitched a story which included a visual by
@mbostock
for what one *hour* of payments looked like (story by
@alexismadrigal
here: ) and you can see it's essentially the same as one *minute* of payments now.
9 years! So proud to have been there for more than 5 of them. Met so many inspiring business owners along the way, made friends for life, met my now husband, and learned so much! Thank you
@square
,
@jack
!
Today, we're celebrating 9 years serving our sellers.
Throughout the day, we'll be sharing stories of 9 important sellers that helped us shape who we are today.
9 is also a perfect square, so there's that, too.

"Exactly how Cash App caught on with rappers is a bit of a mystery to its parent company, Square, known for its credit-card readers that plug into smartphones." a mystery or the mastermind of

We have a value at the firm “we before me” and Jeff Jordan exemplifies it. Thanks for letting us pull you out to get a little bit of credit for all that you’ve done and continue to do
@jeff_jordan
One of the things I learned from
@grassadonia
at Square was that it was actually OK to keep my head down and just do *the work*; the people who matter will notice. The Cash team has kept their focus on building the best, most magical product and their customers clearly noticed
It's common in the northeast for "snowbirds" to go south to escape the harsh winter months. Will it become normal for people to migrate from California during fire season? We'll call them "fireflies".
⭐️Happy Monday!⭐️ The homes featured on this week's list are both new and fresh - from the newly constructed Los Altos home to the newly renovated East Menlo Park property. Here are last week's most and least expensive homes sold in Silicon Valley🏡🔗
We showed our toddler Toy Story last night, because what kid doesn't love Toy Story? And a few minutes in she said "Can we watch a different movie? This is too crowded". So, yes, Covid isolation is having an impact.

@zamosta
intro'd me to a mentor:
@kimbatronic
. If you know Kim, you know she's one of the most assured, persuasive people, so it only took her 5min to convince me to leave Square & join
@a16z
. Not sure if that was the plan all along🤔but so glad I got to work w/ you Kim!
Quick update: After 7.5(!) years, I’m moving on from
@a16z
. It’s been an incredible ride and I’m thankful for being part of a team (special thx to
@wennmachers
) where I learned so much and was able to do so much. Where I was encouraged to speak up + felt heard. ❤️
Lauren was one of the sharpest, hardest-working, mission-oriented people at Square from the earliest days - through hyper-growth and beyond - now using her background, knowledge and leadership to bring powerful financial tools to the self-employed with

💥
Ex-Square execs Lauren Myrick and Connor Dunn raise $12.75M from

to grow its suite of financial services for self-employed businesses with

This is a big deal. Square is largely known for being a leader in SMB/enterprise, yet they've quietly amassed a huge cohort of millennial customers that treat it like a bank.
Realized that since having a baby every adult conversation I have I’m 20% paying attention, 40% wondering how the baby is, 30% wondering when the baby last ate and 17% what was I saying?
Only one month in, but my lil east bae newsletter is starting to look good - will it sustain the 80x monthly growth rate? 😂😂😂
Today we talk about tacos dorados:
Pinterest’s visual discovery board has been brought to life this morning at the NYSE with live music and a brightly colored breakfast assortment for onlookers
The beloved
@gokulr
is such a strong get for the DoorDash team and I’m thrilled to soon have my fav Caviar-quality restaurants delivered to the ‘burbs via DD. Gokul Burritos for all 🌯🙌🏼
I’m curious when (or if?) the big sv tech co’s workforce will reach a life stage when on-site childcare is a more important perk than catered lunch or acupuncture
When you have a kid, you quickly realize why child care is the biggest barrier to both parents working. It's hard to find, and it's expensive. So when it's not, more mothers work! And kids benefit too! ---> Thread 👇
Hello. I’m back after a pregnancy and a three part pandemic and I don’t know how to dress anymore. Are we fully committing to the WFH athleisure lifestyle or are we going Hunger Games avant-garde?
Agreed! My time feels so much more valuable since having a baby. And I've found that I have been much more bold professionally. If I'm leaving my most precious little creature all day, the bar is so much higher to make the time apart count!
Bc I enjoy the work, I used to have more patience. Now I feel a stronger urgency to up level my team more quickly. I want to spend my time doing the most high value things and to grow more quickly. More things need to happen in less time if I want to make bath time :)
Living legend! So grateful to work with and learn from
@jeff_jordan
. He's a generous, humble leader and with all of his professional accomplishments he could have dialed back three jobs ago, but Jeff is always pushing forward. I'm sure there's more ahead!🏆
No one:
Me: while the title and text of the commercial they're parodying is indeed a reference to Orwell's '1984', the basis for the imagery significantly pre-dates the book and is actually an allusion to Plato's Allegory of the Cave
My hometown of Buffalo, NY would not be the first place you’d think of as the HQ for the latest high-growth tech co - but the incubator
@forty3north
is changing that (and quickly!)
You could staff the whole NBA with the number of people that count
@jeff_jordan
as a mentor and I'm proud to be one of them! Great podcast on his insights as both an operator and investor
It seems fitting on International Mentoring Day (today!) that I share the
@HarryStebbings
podcast where he interviews my mentor/partner
@jeff_jordan
! Tune in for all things marketplaces, how to evaluate them, operating vs. investing, and more
So excited to see what Francoise and Pinterest will do together - she's a true powerhouse and a genuine leader. I wasn't even in her direct org and learned so much from her over the years
I was offered one of the lead roles in Mary Poppins for the Kindergarten play and insisted on being a backup dancer instead. Then, in the highschool musical I had one line and ended up just not saying it. Now I do PR.
Reading books is tough with a toddler running around, but I read this book in two days. I laughed, I cried, and I learned a lot about culture and business. Buy: What You Do is Who You Are by

Life in the suburbs:
Me: hi, i’d like to return this outdoor table, it has a crack
Them: cracking is a feature of the wood
Me: its just one big crack
Them: did you leave it outdoors? You need to store it indoors
Me: its outdoor furniture
Them: yes.
One day when I retire I will open a tiny business that does one thing really well, one day a week. In the meantime, here’s someone else’s bread shop in Berkeley only open from 10-4 on Wednesdays
I moderated a panel on Zoom today for 50 people and was more nervous doing that than speaking in front of nearly 2,000 people on Clubhouse earlier this week. The Clubhouse Audience-Size Distortion Field is real and so much better for introverts and people who can’t sit still😁
I've tweeted about Square in some form or another for the last 8 years but now that I'm a semi-popular east bay newsletter writer🤣, RTing this feels particularly relevant for my followers
I've been lucky in my career to collaborate with brilliant people on bold ideas (like at Virgin America when we landed a spaceship at SFO!🚀). This year's American Dynamism summit was among one of the best events to be a part of: 🧵

Like many women, I had a tough recovery after a long labor & c-section. My husband and I are beyond fortunate to work for companies that offer generous leave - to the benefit of my recovery & the care of our baby. In a country like ours, this should be the norm, not the exception
Somehow a group of my closest friends and I have remained in touch over the last 14 years in 4 different cities and yet tonight was the first time we ever thought to video conf?!
