As I look back on Effies 2024, one phrase keeps ringing in my ears: ā€œWalk the talk.ā€ In an industry that loves to shout out loud, thereā€™s little or no real battle cry for actionā€”a refusal to stop at words when the world demands meaningful deeds. For @TalentedAgency , the defining moment wasnā€™t just winning Silver and Bronze but how we won. When it became clear that our campaign for @urbancompany_UC Company, championing the dignity of labour, was earning recognition, we scrambled to prepare the client team for their moment. But life had other plans, and no one could make it. Thatā€™s when Tilak Dugar (our most loved client at UC) flipped the narrative, asking, ā€œWhy not invite a top-rated Urban Company professional to accept the award instead?ā€ Her reasoning hit like a lightning bolt: ā€œThis is an effectiveness award, and theyā€™re the ones who make it effective.ā€ Instantly, we saw what it means to truly walk the talkā€”to celebrate an idea and the people who make it real. This wasnā€™t just an award momentā€”it was a byte-sized revolution on stage, a brand that didnā€™t just preach about dignity but practised it unapologetically. This year, I vowed to embrace the mystery in my work, and Effies 2024 proved that the unexpected can be extraordinary. We didnā€™t just walk the talkā€”we took strides. We didnā€™t just speakā€”we were heard. Man, folks outside of advertising would be dumbfounded at how absurd some of the pricing practices in the agency business still are. šŸ¤Æ The tl;dr version of most legacy agency-client contracts essentially narrows down to ā€˜here you go, take a whole bunch of our employee hours to execute a truckload of your workā€™. Itā€™s v tempting to villainize one side and assign blame unilaterally in these scenarios, but the reality is so much more complex. The repercussions are mostly borne by the staff. But there is also the side effect of misaligned incentives for the agency itself. Ultimately, everything thatā€™s wrong in the agency business can in some way be traced back to the way we price.
