If Roe v Wade is overturned, I will do everything in my power to protect the over half a million women in Oakland County and their right to make choices over their own bodies.
Abortion in Michigan remains legal. Earlier today Judge Cunningham granted an injunction, meaning county prosecutors cannot enforce the 1931 abortion ban.

@MIAttyGen
Congratulations
@KyraHBolden
! It’s a big day for Michigan - for the first time in our state’s history we have a Black woman on her way to the Michigan Supreme Court. Kyra will be an outstanding addition to the Court.
Late last night, I along with six other elected Michigan prosecutors filed a brief asking the
@MISupremeCourt
to immediately consider
@GovWhitmer

I’m voting
#YesOn3
to restore the rights we’ve had under Roe for my entire adult life.
I stood with fellow Prosecutors

Tomorrow marks one year since the tragic shooting at Oxford High School. To honor the four beautiful lives lost, Hana, Justin, Tate, and Madisyn, and all the lives that will never be the same, I will be lighting a lantern at 7 PM outside of my home.

In 2015, I had the honor of finalizing April and Jayne DeBoer-Rowse's adoption — the first same-sex adoption in Michigan — which gave April and Jayne their rights as full parents to all five of the children that they love and raise together.
We won the Michigan Primary Election! This victory would not have been possible without your support and the support from volunteers, community leaders, and elected officials across the state. Thank you all so much for standing with us!

We are in a moment where antisemitism and hate speech are spreading rapidly and becoming normalized. This is unacceptable and has no place in our country.
Hateful threats present a danger to public safety and individuals who make such threats will be held accountable.
I am inspired by the bravery shown by students at Oxford High School who organized a walk out yesterday in support of the victims in Uvalde.
We must do better for our children.
🕯Light up Oxford and beyond TONIGHT at 7PM to honor and remember the lives of Hana, Tate, Justin, and Madisyn and the hundreds of students and loved ones terrorized that day. Let’s

I have never been more proud to serve the people of this community, and there’s still so much I want to accomplish. That’s why I’m running for re-election as Oakland County Prosecutor.

I am heartened that
@GovWhitmer
's proposed budget allocates significant funding for criminal justice reform efforts in our state, providing vital support to our work to ensure equal justice for all in Oakland County and across Michigan.
I am relieved by yesterday’s ruling, which is an important step for reproductive freedom.
Now the fight continues and the voters of Michigan will likely decide in November whether reproductive freedom will become a constitutional right in our state.
Today, I briefed the press on a serious human trafficking case in Oakland County, as well as my office’s inauguration of a dedicated trafficking unit.
I ran for Oakland County Prosecutor to protect our County’s most vulnerable — and that starts with our children.
“‘Prominent elected officials peddling baseless falsehoods in public is a deeply troubling trend. We should not and cannot ignore Mike Shirkey. I just can't imagine how the public will continue to support people like that,’ McDonald said.”
Prosecutors are the last line of defense in protecting people against the criminalization of abortion. I will NOT charge anyone for seeking or assisting abortion care, which is why I joined 84 other elected officials making the same commitment in a joint statement from
@fjp_org
As Oakland County Prosecutor, I will not charge medical professionals for providing essential health care. Thank you

for ensuring this message is delivered.

It’s time to elect a new Prosecutor who will work to end mass incarceration and systemic racism and create a fairer justice system for all Oakland County residents.

For too long, Black women have been excluded from sitting in positions of power.
In a historic vote today, the U.S. Senate confirmed Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson, a dedicated public servant and proven fighter for criminal justice reform, to SCOTUS.
Congratulations!
I’m so excited about this endorsement from the
@freep
: “Michigan’s second-largest county would be better served by refreshing the leadership of the prosecuting attorney’s office, and Karen McDonald is the candidate best suited to confront the challenges.”
April is
#SecondChanceMonth
, a national effort to raise awareness and celebrate second chance opportunities for people who have completed their sentences.
After SCOTUS overturned Roe v Wade we came together as a state and we got to work. Last night’s results reflect this. Not only did Michigan vote
#Yeson3
to restore reproductive freedom, but we re-elected leaders up and down the ballot. I am proud of our state for turning out!
It was a pleasure speaking to
@JewishNewsDet
earlier this month about our new Hate Crimes Unit in the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office. We have to put more attention and resources into prosecuting hate crimes.
Yesterday, I hosted
@GovWhitmer
and several of my fellow public safety leaders from across Southeast Michigan. We discussed the best ways to bring together to address violent crime, including much-needed investments - especially in mental health - to keep Michiganders safe.
The current law in Michigan, Act 328, makes it a felony to perform an abortion, with no exceptions for rape or incest. It is a complete ban.
If Roe v Wade is overturned, women will have no control over their own bodies for the first time in 50 years.
When women succeed, we all succeed. But the converse is also true: when women fail, our society fails. I am committed to building a criminal justice system in Oakland County that hears women, that sees women, and works to protect them.
Honored to celebrate with
@gretchenwhitmer

@LtGovGilchrist
, and to see so many friends who are energized to make positive changes throughout Michigan in 2023 and beyond!

Today I testified before the Civil Rights, Judiciary, and Public Safety Committee of the MI Senate on recently proposed gun legislation. I, along with many others, urged them to take a comprehensive, evidence-based approach to preventing gun violence.
Violent crime is a national issue, but we need Michigan solutions to address it. I am thankful that we have
@GovWhitmer
tackling it head-on, by bringing together state and local partners and advocating for the resources we need to keep our communities safe and healthy.
14 kids and 1 teacher murdered in another mass school shooting at a Texas elementary school. My heart goes out to all those involved in this unthinkable tragedy.

Thank you all for your unwavering support this election season!
With your help, we received 87 endorsements, dropped 114,550 pieces of literature, distributed 1,250 yard signs, and raised over $829,000. I could not have won this race without you.
Hate crimes, and particularly crimes directed towards the Jewish community are on the rise. My office will not tolerate hate crimes in our community, which is why I formed the Hate Crimes Unit to address and combat such offenses head on.
“As prosecutor, my primary obligation is to follow the law and keep Oakland County safe. In rendering these decisions, I am obeying the Constitution and pursuing sentences that will keep our communities safe until these individuals are no longer a threat."
My number one goal as Oakland County Prosecutor is public safety - criminalizing women seeking medical treatment does not further that goal.

Had a great day at the Oakland County Animal Shelter yesterday. They have put so much time and care into this shelter, and it shows in the way the workers love their animals. Thank you so much to the staff and to Bob Gatt for meeting with me!
Today is my 100th day in office! In the 100 days since I was sworn in, I have re-oriented the Oakland County Prosecutor's Office to focus on juvenile justice, reducing racial disparities, and alternatives to incarceration for low-level, non-violent crimes.
This morning I was lucky enough to have breakfast with the Women Officials Network. I truly enjoyed discussing important topics, and answering great questions. Thank you for having me!
It’s not too late to vote if you haven’t already! Polls are open until 8pm tonight.
I just voted at my local precinct. Whether you chose to vote in person or absentee, make sure your ballot is returned by 8pm tonight!
Gun violence and mass shootings are an American problem. Something must change. I am committed to preventing gun violence and am working to assess proactive solutions that keep Oakland County safe.
Despite the Court’s opinion today, I remain committed to protecting the over half a million women in Oakland County and their right to reproductive freedom.
Michigan has lost a true giant. Senator Carl Levin served the people of this state with humility, intelligence, and heart. He fought for every person in our state equally, whether you lived in Benton Harbor or Bloomfield Hills.
When I ran for Prosecutor, I promised to stand up for kids, who are too-often overlooked by our criminal justice system. Today, as promised, my office re-instituted the Canine Advocacy Program, enabling therapy dogs to assist child victims. Check out my interview w/

I’ve been an attorney for almost 25 years. I have never in my experience as a prosecutor, a private practice attorney, a judge, and now as an elected prosecutor, been so concerned about the crimes in our country that come from this white supremacist extremism and violence.
"My only goal is to make sure that they know I am going to do everything possible to hold these three people accountable because their kids deserve that and I speak for my entire team. We never forget about the victims, never." -- Karen McDonald
While a guilty plea does not bring back the lives of Justin Shilling, Hana St. Juliana, Tate Myre, and Madisyn Baldwin, or heal the wounds of all those who were terrorized on that day, it is a step towards accountability.
I am honored to receive the award, but there is still much work to be done. Gun violence and mass shootings continue to rock our country and county day after day. Something must change, and I am committed to bringing that change to Oakland County.
ENDORSEMENT ALERT: Michigan's Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist II has endorsed my campaign! I am so honored to receive his endorsement and am eager to work alongside the Governor and
@LtGovGilchrist
to bring criminal justice reform to our county!
I am honored to receive the endorsement of Governor Gretchen Whitmer! With such strong support from our state leaders, there is no limit to what we can achieve in Oakland County.
As long as I have the privilege of serving as Oakland County Prosecutor, know this: I am committed to meaningful action on behalf of our LGBTQ+ community not just during

I am deeply disturbed by this reprehensible rhetoric from the MI GOP Chair. At a time of rising political violence and threats against elected officials - including in Michigan - I cannot think why anyone would seek to heighten tensions with this kind of dangerous rhetoric.
I intended on celebrating Mother’s Day with my family and remembering my own mother. The sun is shining and there is much to be grateful for. But then I read this opinion piece by
@GreenhouseLinda
and realized that we are not in a moment where it’s ok to rest. Action is required.
Just over a week ago SCOTUS overturned Roe v. Wade and stripped states' ability to enforce common-sense gun laws. As Oakland County Prosecutor I remain committed to protecting a woman’s right to choose and protecting everyone from gun violence.
“The prosecutor’s job is to be just and fair – not to just charge the highest possible charge and ask for the highest possible sentences,” McDonald said. “Sometimes, that’s not the right thing to do and it’s not going to make our community safer.”
A reminder from our most devoted supporter to select the Democratic ballot and vote Karen McDonald for Oakland County Prosecutor in the August 4th primary!
It is truly an honor to receive the endorsement of The Detroit Free Press! I am proud to have the continued support of trusted news organizations like The Detroit Free Press and The Detroit News, and I look forward to the election on November 3rd!
Today marks the founding of our nation and grants us time to reflect on the progress we've made since 1776. On this day we must also take time to acknowledge the setbacks we have encountered.
Michigan State House Representative Padma Kuppa has endorsed my campaign! I look forward to working with Rep. Kuppa and other state leaders to bring much-needed criminal justice reform to Oakland County!
Friday morning I attended a press conference with concerned clergy, citizens, and activists at New Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Pontiac to address increased racial tension in our community.
Both within the criminal justice system and beyond, let’s make sure protecting the safety, health, and well-being of every Oakland County resident is our top priority. So

I am so excited to announce that the 14th District Democratic Party has endorsed my campaign! I appreciate your support to bring progressive criminal justice reform to Oakland County.
