I love teaching. Got standing ovation at the end of last astronomy 1101 class today from my 200 students :). ok they also were leaving after, so let's say half students got up to clap & half clapped while leaving ;) so kind & inspiring of them @Cornell @CornellCAS #teaching.

Cool fact: "Ringshine" would light up the twilight hours on Saturn if you were floating in your spacecraft in its atmosphere - pretty cool vision. Ringshine should be a new English word - Did you enjoy the Ringshine too? excellent dinner conversation. Tks for sharing @JPMajor.

This view, made from images acquired by NASA's Cassini spacecraft on February 17, 2007 #OTD shows the effect of "ringshine" on Saturn's night side. Twilight and pre-dawn on Saturn would be pretty bright, thanks to its reflective rings. 🪐

Which stars have the cosmic vantage point to have seen Earth as a transiting planet since civilization bloomed about 5,000 years ago? We found about 70% of all exoplanets through transits so far. So with just the same technology we have now - who could have spotted us?.

Uranus has never looked better. Really. Only Voyager 2 and Keck (with adaptive optics) have imaged the planet's faintest rings before, and never as clearly as Webb’s first glimpse at this ice giant, which also highlights bright atmospheric features.
