I guess I should stick an intro here. I’m Kaihatsu, a UAE-born Scot working in Osaka as a type designer! I also spend a lot of time in Hokkaido visiting Ainu communities, etc. If the above thread interested you, feel free to follow. I post about Ainu culture, games, all sorts!
This morning I took part in a ceremony to honour Scotsman Neil Gordon Munro, who lived among the Ainu people of Nibutani. His research & films are of great importance to preserving Ainu culture. He also gave free medical care to the villagers. More photos to come when I get them!

@OliverJia1014 After visiting it in winter I want to come back and see it in summer too. A couple of the places I wanted to see further out of the city were buried in snow and I almost got my car stuck trying to find them.

@jn_445 23 was actually my first birthday where I had nobody around to wish me happy birthday and I just did nothing. Went to work then came home.

@Vheten1 His orthography is outdated and differs considerably from modern Romaji spelling of the language. That and there’s apparently words in there that either got mistranslated or didn’t even exist in the first place. His work was also biased by his role as a Christian missionary.

@Springandashura These are very slight red glows that are hard to see. Japanese uses the same word as English for aurora for this reason because they only ever had a word to refer to this dim red light. Ainu doesn’t even have a word for that.

Yesterday while in an antiques shop I came across a commemorative paperweight that was made to mark the construction of this memorial.
Went to see the Kucinkoro monument in the outskirts of Asahikawa. Kucinkoro was a leader of the Kamikawa Ainu at the head of the Ishikari river, who stood up against government plans to forcibly relocate them in the early Meiji period. Ceremonies are held here to honor him.
