Raising taxes on the wealthy isn't just practical—it's also popular. Recent polling from @nwlc found that 70% of respondents favor expanding the Child Tax Credit, 64% support expanding the estate tax, & 59% support raising the capital gains tax rate.

Racial justice requires unrigging this system and taxing wealth more heavily to build a better future. The mayor & DC Council must rise to the occasion by fortifying local programs that provide economic security. We'll be sharing opportunities to testify soon, so stay tuned.

In 2025, the 2017 Trump tax cut will save the wealthiest 1% of American households an average $61,090, and save the wealthiest 0.1% an average of $252,300. The tax code keeps widening the gap between the wealthy and the rest of us.

Who cares what Elon Musk thinks? He is the ultimate example of what happens when the tax system allows someone to hoard too much wealth: They get outsized influence on government.

Today, the All in for DC campaign sent a letter to DC Councilmembers urging them not to lose more time as DC faces big budget pressures, and to move forward with the Tax Revision Commission proposals already in front of them. Read the full letter:

The Tax Revision Commission can't be relied on to deliver tax policy that supports DC residents. DC Council needs to get serious about raising revenue by taxing concentrated wealth—with or without the TRC's approval.

New: It's deja vu all over again for DC's Tax Revision Commission, which still can't deliver proposals to reform the city's tax system. With big business interests and even Mayor Bowser meddling with the process, will this group ever come up with answers?

The Tax Revision Commission may be scrapping its work to accommodate unknown business interests, but we have a tax plan for the people that raises revenue to invest back in our communities:

Racial income disparities got worse in 2023. Median incomes for Black, Latino, and Asian residents stayed the same while median income for white households increased $12,000.

For those trying to push a narrative that DC residents need to just move on from humane, anti-eviction pandemic policies, according to many economists, we are still in a k-shaped economy these days, just worse. Economic inequality has gotten worse, not better.
