Subaru is an active subversion of the genki protagonist trope, because by design their whole point is that they're just naturally this positive. He's a subversion of that because 1. A lot of his positivity is fake and 2. He isn't naive and not necessarily a very kind person
i think the funniest thing about enstars having a dark story is how its artstyle is so bright😭😭 a character had their father blamed for an accidental death & he was sent to jail where he passed away, leaving the son fatherless… and the character in question looks like this

The idea of the genki character is that they're unapologetically happy and sweet and kind, but Subaru isn't that. Fuck, Subaru can be a fucking asshole, often intentionally, and I say that as a positive. Akira took a common trope and made something nuanced out of it.

Uhhh point is that when the writers aren't being racist, ethnophobic, transphobic in early parts, or do things like sidelining/ignoring/reverting previous character development, add weird ass npcs as antagonists, or make some other writing fuckup, the writing can be really good.

I don't know how I feel about the way Rei and Ritsu's disabilities are portrayed in the game bc on one hand it's acknowledged that it is a genetic condition that hinders their daily life, but it's also barely ever discussed and it sometimes feels like smthn used for gags

Another thing I thought abt Hinata's new hair: it's asymmetrical. Her and Yuta had symmetrical bangs, and Yuta kept hers when she grew out their hair, while Hinata's bangs are sideswept and longer on one side. It could symbolize the breaking of their mirror/opposites act.
