I began writing about the role of social media in youth suicide in 2015. And not a day goes by that I don’t think of the children who suffered, the parents who grieve, and the sterile cruelty of Mr. Zuckerberg’s (@finkd’s) choices. No donations of any size will ever erase that legacy.

Facts matter.
A reminder on integrity. This is straight up false, and the reporter played along. The data was taken, Facebook buried its own audit, it’s still fighting lawsuits, he and the board are actively being deposed, and the “concluded” investigations were due to ~$6B in settlements.

It’s time to remember that “social media” is actually a form of mass media publishing, and we can’t have a healthy, functioning democracy—never mind a sane society—unless publishers have responsibilities. Does being able to publish trash like this equal “free speech”? I don’t think so.

Under Gov. Hochul’s leadership, NY has become a model for the nation when it comes to putting kids before Big Tech profits. At @_WeAreMAMA, we hope @GovKathyHochul will take action in January and issue a proposal for a new statewide standard banning student smartphones in schools.
I listen to New Yorkers. This year, I’ve heard from students, parents, and teachers about how smartphones and social media are fueling conflicts and disrupting our classrooms. We’re going to tackle the challenge of smartphones in schools.

I teach the writing requirement at Stanford. When we discuss AI, I have one of my students explain how language models work based on predicatibility and averages. I then ask them if they want to be predictable and average. It's a corny motivating tactic but it's worked thus far.

At X, protecting our children is our top priority. As I’ve always said, freedom of speech and safety can and must coexist. And as a mother, it’s personal. When X testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee last January, we committed to working with Congress on child safety legislation. We’ve heard the pleas of parents and youth advocates who seek sensible guardrails across online platforms, and the Kids Online Safety Act (KOSA) addresses that need. After working with the bill authors, I’m proud to share that we’ve made progress to further protect freedom of speech while maintaining safety for minors online. Thank you to @MarshaBlackburn and @SenBlumenthal for your leadership, dedication and collaboration on this issue and landmark legislation. We urge Congress and the House to pass the Kids Online Safety Act this year.

Is keeping minors out of casinos and bars, or prohibiting them from accessing cigarettes “a backdoor way to control access” to those things for all Americans? I don’t think so @elonmusk. It’s actually about…protecting kids. 🤸🏽
