in winter! We discovered 42 pairs of Viking-age ice-skates in York - the majority were made from horse leg bones although cattle leg bones were also used. Would you ice-skate in these? ⛸️

. Over 1700 shoes (Viking-age or later) were recovered from Coppergate. It's rare for organic materials like leather to last for so long, but the wet, peaty soil at Coppergate helped to preserve organic materials such as timber, textiles and leather.

Amber was used for jewellery in Viking Age York - it was produced from fossilised tree resin and imported from the Baltic Sea region. The Vikings traded all around the world, buying exotic and luxury goods such as silk, spices, silver, and wine.

Over 1700 shoes of Viking-age or a later date were recovered from Coppergate which is remarkable given that leather rarely survives in archaeological deposits. Most of the shoes were of ‘turnshoe’ construction meaning that they are molded and stitched inside-out on a wooden last.
