There may be a misunderstanding by whoever wrote this about "administrative overhead". The indirect costs pay for the people who administer the funds - the grants and finance offices, but the much larger part represents contribution to building and maintaining the research facilities. At Yale, the administrators take 15% of any incoming $ to manage it, even unrestricted gifts. However, for research grants from #NIH etc the indirect cost is charged at 67.5% of the direct cost (what goes to the PI). The 67.5% is added on to the direct cost to get the total cost. Thus, the indirect cost is 67.5/167.5 of the total cost = 40%. Of the total grant, the PI gets 60% and the university gets 40%. The university is not taking 67.5% of the total. 40% may seem like a lot, but Yale has spent ca. $500M over the last 20 years on our Chemistry labs, which covers 25 PIs. Or, ca. $1M per PI per year.

@lbj23com1291037 @VivekGRamaswamy Yes, salaries plus fringe benefits. These are the largest expenditures fir most grants.

@Jordi_Faraudo Hopefully the underfunding becomes generally recognized and that the situation improves.

There is something fishy here. If he voted, he is a US citizen presumably. The normal process is they would apply for her to have a green card. While this is in process, she cannot leave the US and she would not be deported. Once she has a green card she can begin the process for citizenship. Media needs to report all the facts.

@NTFabiano Related: senior profs are asked to write in-depth evaluation letters for promotions at other universities. Again, this is pay back for requests from one's own institution. However, these requests lean disproportionately on profs at top places and NAS members to check boxes.

@Will_Tanner_1 I first went to South Africa for a #WATOC meeting in Capetown in 2005. I went several times since. It is physically stunning and I made some great friends. Sadly, the political decline mirrors the Rand going from 7 to a $ to now 18-19. It is drip, drip, drip to Zimbabwe.

@LingfengGe Until about 1989 it was normal to write drafts by hand and an administrative assistant would then type them on an IBM typewriter. One would then Xsrox copies. To submit to a journal you would mail 3 copies and a coverletter.

It is very sad to learn that Martin Karplus passed away on Dec 28 at age 94. He was a scholar and pioneering chemical physicist with great contributions in many areas including molecular dynamics. We interacted many times starting from my graduate time at Harvard. His legacy is reinforced by the large number of coworkers who have also done much to advance computational science.

It is with the greatest sorrow that I say goodbye to my wonderful friend, colleague, and inspiration Fraser Stoddart @sirfrasersays . Hearing him present on his first catananes and rotaxanes was a truly magical moment. Photo is from the @AmerChemSociety mtg in March with my daughter.
